The Red Lotus Sea( Lake)

The beautiful Lotus flower at the Red Lotus Lake in Udon Thani

It was a lovely sunny morning and we decided to take a trip to The Red Lotus Lake( Sea) locally known as Talay Bua Daeng. It was the wrong time of year to see the Lotus in full bloom so will going back in December to see that sight.We still saw a few but not many but witnessed a lot of birds and Water Buffalo who didn’t look best pleased with being disturbed…look at that grumpy face. The Buffalo are brought over in the morning and taken back to terra firma in the evening.

and also the boatman took us to a little temple on a tiny, tiny island.

This island when the water is high is virtually submerged hence the big and I mean big steps leading up to the Buddha’s. The name of the temple is Wat Don Leung on the Nong Harn Lake. One of the monks goes over to the mainland every morning to get food for the day.

We were also allowed to pick the seed pods of the lotus flower which I have seen for sale along the road but never knew what they were. I do now… They were lovely to eat a bit nutty…like me!

It was a lovely informative trip and will definitely return in December.

    I loved this tour of the Red Lotus Sea/Lake! The pictures are beautiful. It’s so amazing to sit here in New Jersey and think about the wonderful places that exist all over the world. Thank you for sharing your trip!

      Yes, Diane a little like sunflower seeds 🙂 We went back a little while ago and the army had destroyed the lovely temple and the monks are gone so sad they were hurting no one
      .

        Neither will I, Diana it was so sad to see. I was shocked as they may not have had permission but had lived there for years and they trashed it

    Fascinating – and truly gorgeous. So sad to read that the military trashed this beautiful oasis. Hardly a military target, it seems to me – simply another sad example of man’s inhumanity to man. Happy I got to see it through your eyes. Thank you for sharing.

      Yes, it certainly is Madelyn and I am so pleased we saw it before it was trashed…I do have the photos as a sad reminder and I was shocked as Buddism is the main religion here and monks are held in high esteem, to do that to a temple and the monks home was very surprising and shocking to me…. xx

    I have reblogged this post from a year ago as there was so much interest in the comments on the Lotus flower…We did return again and were very sad to see that the military had ..well trashed the tiny temple and forced the monks to leave it was such a sad sight to see forlorn and abandoned…Why? I don’t know..maybe they shouldn’t have been there…..So I treasure these photos of a lovely little oasis in the middle of the wetlands which is no more…..

      It was a first for me JC and you can also make into a spicy salad . I am learning so much about what you can do with plants here ..eat them, use as medicine it is quite amazing.
