I read this and watched the u- tube video to say it shocked me was an understatement… If it a tradition in another country then although I think it is a barbaric one and should be stopped that is not only for me to say.

If it carried out in my country of birth then I believe it is another matter and anyone caught carrying out this barbaric custom should be prosecuted…

The article below was taken directly from Feb 2017 ITV news.

A case of female genital mutilation (FGM) is either discovered or treated in England every hour, according to the analysis of NHS statistics by a charity.

Between April 2015 and March 2016, there were 8,656 times when women or girls attended doctors’ surgeries or hospitals and the problem was assessed – the equivalent of one every 61 minutes.

Did you know this barbarity was so prevalent in the UK?

I read the article on a blogging colleagues website whose name is Ellen Best and she can be found on https://ellenbest24.wordpress.com/2018/07/29/watch-right-of-passage-on-youtube-fgm/

This link below takes you to Ellen’s beautiful and poignant poem which really moved me.

Thank you for reading and watching and if it has touched you then please share far and wide x

I think maybe Dolly it is because those kinds of acts seem to be swept under the carpet in The UK it is almost well, not almost, politicians don’t like to address situations like this… they just ignore it…

There is a law here since 1996 that makes it a crime; however, the first case where it was applied came up in 2017. Official numbers are 500.000 either having been subjected to it or at risk, but the numbers are derived from the number of emigrants from countries where GM is practiced. The whole issue is so politically, racially, and culturally loaded that nobody even wants to speak of it openly. It’s tragic, really.

I feel so sad at how those poor girls are violated and yes it is political, racial and culturally loaded as you say, Dolly but someone has to take a stand and make it stop…

I don’t want to watch the video. I’ve read enough about it, but thank you for sharing, Carol. It is terrible when people condone this. It is awful what it does to women’s bodies (and souls) though often it is women who perpetuate it (as with foot binding in China) because it is believed to be the only way that their daughters will get husbands. And of course, that says something, too.

The issue of coming of age and initiation is so fraught. There’s an article in vol.I of my Rape Cultures and Survivors book that covers rape in a female initiation school in S. Africa. The girls were not subjected to FGM there, but they were assaulted, raped, and abused. Many of the girls though went there without their parents’ knowledge because they believed it would give them status and they would receive new clothes and other gifts. Participants were sworn to secrecy.

That is awful that girls believe they have to subject themselves to gain status …The video wasn’t graphic it was a poem which was heartfelt and sad…but very nicely read but I understand that it is your choice not to watch and listen Merril. So much abuse of girls still goes on in this world doesn’t it and you would have thought that by now it would be different such a shame and so sad x

Yes it is barbaric Carol, and so sad that in todays world it is still being carried out.
I know the government here in the uk try to identify families that travel back to their home countries to have these abhorrent practices carried out on young girls..

Many years ago now I watch a BBC panorama documentary upon this practice.. Cameras were averted but young girls were held down screaming.. I have never forgotten the effects of watching that program and Sign every petition I see to add my voice..
Thank you for adding yours and to Ellen for bringing it into peoples awareness..

    Much love your way.. ❤

I have done very little in the way of helping these girls but will make it my mission to find petitions I can sign to add my voice …an abhorrent practice… Hugs xxx

Nothing makes me more enraged and although it’s not politically correct to say anything about anything or anybody, I am furious that our own country could be dragged into the dark ages with such practices. It is not cultural it is just barbaric wherever it goes on.

Dear Carol, thank you for reading this and being moved enough to share it. My thoughts on the subject are still the same and always will be. The practice and the way its carried out is abhorrant to me. It is another way to control women, just to be certain they know their place in the world. That place is not to be happy or to enjoy their lives but to be in pain, even at the most beautiful moments. Lovemaking/intercourse and childbirth will forever be times of great pain and unnecessary suffering. That is for the children that survive. The mental health of these children, girls and women is on a par witth rape victims, surviving not living.
Thank you on behalf of them.

Dear Ellen I feel it was such a small thing I have done and if I can do more I will in a heartbeat…It makes me so sad and I just don’t know how or who will ever be able to put a stop to it…It really has shocked me to the core as I truly did not know how widespread this barbaric practice carried out in the name of culture instigated by I am sure a man can be allowed to carry on…You are correct Ellen it is all about control of the female of the race…I have no more words I am stunned xxx
