There are probably also many other problems we could think of which this photo infers but behind the scenes…
What do I think is the solution?
I think we should start in our own communities and our own kitchens… Start small and grow big…Mum’s armies…
I have subscribers to my blog from all around the world as I am sure that most of you do so my thinking that between we could enthuse mum’s army and reach around the world we could make a difference…
Men really have made a pretty poor job over the centuries we still have wars, persecution of women and girls and it is the mums as shown in my picture who worry about the next meal or somewhere safe to sleep and clothes for their children.
So ladies and (men) we need to wake up, yes many of you work and are busy but sometimes we need to step up and be counted and go that extra mile it may be hard, it may upset your carefully planned rota, it may upset your family and kids…
But hey ho…Is that you in that photo?? I suspect not, I suspect you have clean water, food every mealtime for your table and your kids have decent clothes not ones with holes.
If we all looked at the waste which comes from our own kitchens we would be astonished and I hope many feel guilty when you see these photos…I do!
There but for the grace of God go I … Source unknown…Although there has been lots of speculation over the years.
My first post on waste included this link which I have signed up for basically the first task is looking at exactly what we waste in our own homes …If nothing else it opened my eyes and made me think… Think about what I waste and how I can waste less…
Also wasting less is a bonus because it saves us money... So I am not asking you to do something for nothing it could also improve your health…Double whammy then???
I already do some but not enough…

Over the next three weeks, we’ll email you easy tips and strategies to try as you continue to track your waste. By the end of the month, you’ll see how much food you saved.

If you do …Here’s how to track your preventable waste.
|Place all your PREVENTABLE* food waste into a quart-size container (like a plastic deli or food storage container) or a quart-size zip-top bag. Once you fill a container, record it either on a paper copy of the Recording Worksheet or in your online Food Waste Log. Throw away the contents as usual, and start filling it again. Make sure you use the same size container throughout the Challenge. Keep containers in the fridge or freezer if you’re worried about odour or pests. If you come to the end of a week and the last container is partially filled, estimate the portion to the nearest quarter (ex. .25, .5, .75).|
|*PREVENTABLE food waste is food you bought to eat but has since spoiled or food that was prepared but was not eaten then thrown away. This does not include non-edible food waste such as banana peels, egg shells or chicken bones. Do not collect liquid waste, such as soup.|
My biggest preventable food waste is herbs…I need to grow more so I can pick them fresh as some herbs keep longer when picked than others.
Tip: Storing Coriander( Cilantro). I use a tall jar with a screw lid and pop my coriander in ..No water just the coriander and it keeps fresh for a least a week I use quite a lot so never keep the same in a jar for longer but have heard it keeps for a further 3/4 days before it gets discoloured.
The coriander roots I freeze and use in curry pastes as they have a stronger flavour.
Broccoli stems... I have always used in soups but quite recently discovered that peeled and sliced they are great just as a vegetable or in a stir-fry.
Carrots I scrub instead of peeling so no waste there.
Citrus peels…Zesting is good and imparts a beautiful taste in cakes, biscuits, desserts. Peel can be dried or candied. Freeze the zest in ice-cube trays.
Dry and grind the peels to a powder and add to salt and black pepper for a lovely seasoning mix.
Add orange peel to your brown sugar and you will get no more clumping as it draws out the moisture.
Vegetable peels...Make vegetable crisps…
Watermelon Rinds…One of my best discoveries…I love them pickled…
- 4 lb of Watermelon
- 1 chilli thinly sliced
- 1-inch piece fresh ginger finely sliced or diced
- 2 Star Anise
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 4 tsp salt I use fresh mineral salt dried here
- 1 cup of rice vinegar
- 1 cup of sugar
Using a vegetable peeler remove the outer green rind and slice the watermelon into I inch slices. Cut away all but 1/4 inch of the flesh (it is) the white part we are pickling. The red flesh keeps for smoothies or ice cream or a nice salad with feta cheese.
Then cut the rind into 1-inch pieces.
Add the chilli, ginger, star anise, salt, pepper, rice vinegar and sugar plus ½ cup of water together in a pan, bring the mixture to a rolling boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar then turn down the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the watermelon rind and bring back to a rolling boil and then again reducing the heat to a simmer for 5 mins or until the rinds are just tender. Remove the pan from the heat, and leave the liquid to cool down. You may need to weigh the watermelon down with a plate or lid, as it needs to stay submerged in the liquid until cool.
Once cooled then transfer to a container with a well-fitting lid and refrigerate for at least 12 hours before you eat…This will keep refrigerated for about 2/3 weeks if it lasts that long…lol
Enjoy with cold meats and cheese or just on its own from the container…

Carol, brilliant post! I love the challenge and I have subscribed myself as well. I am absolutely against food waste. The UK is one of the countries with the biggest food waste!!! Unbelievable… When we lived in an apartment and we shared bins downstairs I could not believe how much food people actually throw away! I barely throw away something from my kitchen as I am trying to use as much as I possibly can and I am always without leftovers. There is always way… And plastic in stores and wrapped food in it… I wish it could be reduced. I am taking now with me my own bags for vegetables, fruits where possible and even in a couple of stores they are willing to give me “unwrapped” food so I am very glad for that… I could see a massive waste reduction in our home… Thank you for sharing this! 💕
