Healthy Eating…Eat Smart…Mealtimes with kids…

Welcome to this weeks…Healthy Eating…Today is my birthday and I am always grateful to see the morning as life is so very precious  I don’t know if it is me getting maudlin…haha…Birthdays do that to me…On the 1st Dec, it will be 19 yrs since one of my besties passed away…

We loved, laughed and cried together as our kids grew up…Life is a lottery, isn’t it…?

She died of cancer…Last week 2 friends and 1 family member died of cancer…A variety of ages not all old like me..The young lad I ranted about last week …Blind and deaf…My opinion failed by those who should have been protecting him…

I think a lot…I also do a lot of research…

What is the one common denominator in this…?

Well, their lifestyles were different…They were different ages…One is still living the others are not…What do they all have in common?

I know I am simplifying….BUT…They all ate and drank…

How many times do we have to be told …That highly processed foods and added sugars are bad for us…

A very funny but true and informative video about unhealthy foods and why they are harmful…

Eating healthy…doesn’t cost any more and keeps you fuller for longer…It does, of course, mean that you may have to spend a little more time shopping, meal planning, gardening but what price health?

After reading about that poor kid..Yeah I know I am banging on about him…It upset me and was avoidable…Proof of what a junk food diet can do…Extreme I know…How many more are like him?

It prompted me to start looking at all these different ways kids food could be jazzed up…made to look inviting…

I did that for the kids birthday parties…I most certainly didn’t have the time to make pretty food every single meal time…Come on…Kids need to learn what they must be eating and that pretty food is a treat…

There are also fussy adults and that is the result of fussy kids…I mean have we time to make our hubbies food look pretty so he will eat it??? I couldn’t find a  picture…But I have a mental one…haha

Introduce different foods regularly…If they try them and don’t like them …That’s ok…Try again cooked a different way or leave it a while and then try again but if it is a vegetable for example and they eat other vegetables …Don’t make a fuss we all have foods we prefer…

But they must eat a balanced meal at mealtimes…

Yes, sometimes we have to say(and) mean it …If you don’t eat your dinner you get no pudding…

As parents and grandparents, we have a responsibility…

No ifs, No buts, Just do it!

Aston’s Cloud eggs...

Perfect, Astons cloud egg

Aston is my grandson...he loves eating and cooking…He also loves experimenting and U-Tube…I am always being shown the wonders of u-tube….experiments, natural phenomenon,  funnies(not) most of the time for Nannie….Our sense of humour differs…haha as it should…He is also my biggest food critic….mmmmm

Neither Aston or Lily liked their egg whites they would eat the yolk…a dippy egg and leave the white…Aston came across this recipe for cloud eggs…Nannie was woken at an ungodly hour for a Sunday to show him how to separate the whites from the yolks…

He then decided that just an egg wasn’t enough so he would make some mince ( Thai) style…

It was a success as both kids now eat the whites of the egg…and I don’t have to cook it …he does…We are working on the washing up…haha

Cloud Eggs Aston styleCloud Eggs Aston Style…..

Let the kids help and they will eat it….It always works…

Both Sally@ Smorgasbord Magazine and I work hard to bring you recipes and advice on nutrition…We cook from scratch using local ingredients where we can…

As Autumn is here and Winter on its way for many of you …It is the cold and flu season or will be…We can prepare for that by ensuring we eat the right food…Sally wrote an excellent article on the immune system...No one likes colds and flu do they? I certainly don’t …An essential read …And don’t forget to get your flu jab …

I have also spoken about the need to get a good nights sleep...Vital to our good health…I came across this very easy and quite a funny way to know if you are sleep deprived…

That all for now…Tomorrow is Wednesday so join me for Whimsical Wednesday it is always fun…xxx

About Carol Taylor:

Enjoying life in The Land Of Smiles I am having so much fun researching, finding new, authentic recipes both Thai and International to share with you. New recipes gleaned from those who I have met on my travels or are just passing through and stopped for a while. I hope you enjoy them.

I love shopping at the local markets, finding fresh, natural ingredients, new strange fruits and vegetable ones I have never seen or cooked with. I am generally the only European person and attract much attention and I love to try what I am offered and when I smile and say Aroy or Saab as it is here in the north I am met with much smiling.

Some of my recipes may not be in line with traditional ingredients and methods of cooking but are recipes I know and have become to love and maybe if you dare to try you will too. You will always get more than just a recipe from me as I love to research and find out what other properties the ingredients I use contain to improve our health and wellbeing.

The environment is also something I am passionate about and there will be more on this on my blog this year…It is important that we are mindful of the world we live in…These honeybees dining on forget me knots say it all to me…

Exciting for me hence the title of my blog, Retired No One Told Me! I am having a wonderful ride and don’t want to get off, so if you wish to follow me on my adventures, then welcome! I hope you enjoy the ride also and if it encourages you to take a step into the unknown or untried, you know you want to…….Then, I will be happy!

More and more of my blogging friends have joined me on MeWe…A social media site which is fairly new and which promises much without the restrictions some other social media sites are choosing to impose on many of us…Join me if you will on  MeWe

So sorry for your losses Carol. 😦 And I wish you a beautiful birthday. ❤ I'm with Aston – I don't eat the whites. I too make what you call cloud eggs, only we call them 'bird nests' eggs here. 🙂 ❤

Thank you, Debby… Yes it was a shocker too many in one week… I do really believe much is caused through what we eat and put on our bodies… Please don’t get me started on the cosmetic industry.. haha… Mmmm now thats a thought for a change… Haha… Ahhh both good names but do you eat them when you make a birds nest? ❤️❤️❤️

Happy birthday! Hope you have a blast!

The cloud egg looks interesting. How did the kids get to like egg yolk? My kid is not fond of it since she was baby, but will eat when mixed like scrambled or in recipes.

I don’t think it matters how they eat it.. we are quite relaxed and work on the assumption that it will be eaten… Dippy egg with bread has all been a favourite ..Now cloud eggs have been discovered they eat it all…Result…haha

My little person doesn’t like purée and mushy foods since baby so I find it difficult to assume that egg yolk will be eaten. Maybe I will try dippy egg with bread. Even then, my kid doesn’t eat bread with butter!

Maybe toast it so it is crispier…Depending on how old your little one is maybe make the food a little chunkier…Have you tried the bread toasted without butter? It is really just trying different ways of introducing the same food….Or just leaving bread and offering something different and reintroducing the bread at a later date…All kids are different..One of my sons lived on carrots as that was his favourite and still is now he is grown up….You can’t second guess kids just try different ways…

    Happy birthday!

I don’t have kids myself, but I’ve looked after plenty in my life, and found getting them involved, and showing them how much you’re enjoying the healthier options, will encourage them to eat most foods. Yes, we all have things we don’t like, but if they see you eating it, and you make them feel like they’re involved in at least some of the steps for getting it on to the table, there’s a great chance they’ll at least be willing to try it. If that fails, going without their treat will encourage them to be a bit more open to at least trying it next time. But you don’t have to use that one often – if at all – if you encourage them to think fruits and veggies are a good thing.

As an example of how much your behaviour about the food matters: one little girl I looked after, I had picking wholefood bars instead of chocolates and sweets when I took her in to town with me, after she’d seen me pick one of those over a chocolate bar. I’d ask her what “sweetie” she wanted, since I’d promise her a treat for good behaviour in town, and she’d voluntarily ask me for a wholefood bar, so we’d go to the healthfood shop, and I’d let her pick one. At least, until her Mother told her they were disgusting. Couldn’t get her to touch them after that. She’d been enjoying them, right up until someone whose opinion mattered to her told her she shouldn’t be.

I am so sorry for your loses but remember that they live on in you, in your memories. As you celebrate your birthday, you are also celebrating their memories. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Happy birthday, Carol. I hope you had lots of yummy healthy pretty food to celebrate.
This was a fascinating but scary article. The wisdom about what’s healthy seems to change at regular intervals. I guess it depends on who’s got the most marketing dollars at the time.
The sleep deprivation test is an interesting one. I’ll try to get my hub to do it. He sleeps for only about 5- 6 hours at night but drops off watching tv. I tell him he needs more sleep but he says he isn’t tired. 🙂

Thank you, Norah… I think you are correct.. Yes, passion fruit, grapes, apple, greek yoghurt and fresh coconut juice..during the day… Sea bass for dinner… Although I did munch a few sesame snacks… I am going to do that tomorrow it is both serious and fun isn’t it… 😀 💕
