Welcome to Saturday Snippets where I indulge my whimsy and my passions… maybe a tune or two…something which has caught my eye this last week…just anything out of the ordinary or extraordinary…my Thai Long Pepper seems to like its new home… the little fruits are ripening well…I can’t wait to see it grow and produce more peppers and then I can try them…exciting…
I have discovered some more rare fruits a Purple Melon which isn’t a melon but belongs to the nightshade family… I am awaiting a delivery from the garden centre…I have on order a beautiful purple mango so pretty and some awesome looking Rainbow Treasure Chillies…see pictured below…
In my world this week … Aston’s new bike has already had some changes made to it boys will be boys…sigh…it is now sitting in the drive as he has been quite sick this week with a very nasty throat infection… I have never in all his years seen him laid up like this…
In my kitchen I have been busy roasting pumpkin for puree… it is our pumpkin season and they are big boys…One pureed and one still to use…My neighbours gifted us with some beautiful fresh baby sweet potatoes plus a lovely orange cake which was yummy…
My kitchen disaster this week…a classic…I forgot to add the yeast to the mix and only realised when I had done 2 ten minute proves and nought happened and the light bulb went on…
There was me determined not to waste the flour, fat, milk etc kneading the rapid yeast into the dough it was a good arm workout…Did it work…not my best loaf of bread but great for toast…sigh
It is really very warm now we are noting the heat has turned up a few notches the showers are no longer freezing but coming out warm no need for heaters here the sun heats the pipes…
This is crazy but…a Waverunner…I could do with that now as it’s topping 43 degrees and tipped to be hotter next month…
Did you know?
#1…More than 1/5 of all the calories consumed by humans worldwide is provided by rice alone.
#2…A duel between three people is actually called a truel.
#3…Bullfrogs do not sleep…The bullfrog was chosen as an animal that doesn’t sleep because when tested for responsiveness by being shocked, it had the same reaction whether awake or resting…dolphins are also an animal which doesn’t sleep…
Animals that don’t need rebound sleep after using up all their energy (bees)
Animals that show harmful side effects of sleep deprivation (humans)…
Conservation Corner:
Important to me and I try hard to do my bit as I truly want a safer, healthier world for my grandchildren to bring their children into…I don’t want them to be living in a world where respiratory illnesses are a common everyday occurrence or they are forced to spend most of their lives indoors as the open air is not safe…maybe this sounds extreme and I do hope it doesn’t happen but…in some places the air is toxic and waste is slowly taking over…
Thursday was Global Recycling Day...created in 2018 to help recognize, and celebrate, the importance recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet. It is a day for the world to come together and put the planet first.
We need to think about what we are throwing away…here Thais are great at recycling goods and clothes but when they really don’t want it…they fly-tip and I know that goes on worldwide… when I lived in the UK it was a problem…there is a minority who don’t give a toss…
Now yesterday and this a minor incident…I was next in line to pay for my goods…the guy in front of me put his goods on the belt…paid and left his trolley there…the trolley park was literally 2 steps away but no he blocked my path to the till and I am assuming he hoped I would move it and put it back for him…I wonder if that is his attitude what he does with his rubbish???
Silly rant I know but it just shows a lack of care…I also believe that for every one of us who is responsible there is a friend or neighbour who isn’t…
Let’s lighten the mood and have a tune…
March has been a good month for music over the decades…March 1985: “We Are The World” is heard on the radio for the first time…if you lived through the 80’s you will no doubt remember that a dream team of pop stars recorded the song to highlight famine in Africa…
Written by Lionel Ritchie and the late Michael Jackson the charity single dominated the Billboard Hot 100 for 4 successive weeks after its release and an All-Star group of Artists for Haiti remade the single in 2010 which was also a hit.
There have been so many remakes but this is one of my favourites…my question is though has much changed since 1985?
I think we all know the answer to that…
I am not an ardent royalist but I do think we have a wonderful Queen…this video shows her through the years where she has never put a foot wrong always smiling and gracious…
My purple Melon plant turned up while I was at the hair salon having my 1st proper haircut for at least a year…so I am soaking its roots before I plant it in its new home and also I want to do it later when the sun has gone down some as it is afternoon and steaming hot…Phew…
Let’s end with some good news it seems that as humans have been confined to home it has given the wildlife chance to flourish…
More and more green spaces (both private and public) are becoming overgrown with wildflowers, giving bees their very own playground to pollinate in. Plantlife, a wild plant conservation charity, has said: “There’s hope that reduced cutting frequencies might be a silver lining for verge wildflowers, giving once-familiar flowers, such as white campion, betony, greater knapweed and harebell, the chance to grow, flower and set seed.”
The cutting of verges less and later will save plants, money and reduce emissions. We need to rewild ourselves and accept nature’s wonderful ‘messiness’.
That’s all for today thank you for dropping in I hope you enjoyed my whimsy… I would love to hear from you in comments as you know how I love to chat…Love Carol xx
Here’s to clean air, consideration of others. the grace of the Queen, the unity of people, and good food! I think you covered this very well, Carol. I do hope your grandson feels better.

I love the idea of purple fruit… I love purple things.
It’s wonderful about how nature is taking advantage of our lockdowns. The reason we have had them is far from wonderful, of course. But there are some lessons for us here if we will take notice, and I hope we will learn and remember.

The Waverunner looks interesting, but I can see the people not looking particularly secure when walking. I imagine I’d be right there with them.
Isn’t it interesting how living things bounce back when we humans aren’t around to screw things up?
Good for the Thai people who are doing their part to consider future generations.

This is a fun and interesting post, Carol. I have also forgotten to include raising agent in both bread and cakes. Adding it later doesn’t work as well and that’s a fact.

43 is far too hot for me!
I have been ‘presented’ to the Queen. She was very small, even with a hat on, and looked exceedingly fed up. Perhaps she already knew I wasn’t a Royalist? 🙂
Shared on Twitter, Carol.
Best wishes, Pete. x
