Welcome back to Saturday Snippets where I indulge my whimsy and my passions… maybe a tune or two…something which has caught my eye this last week…just anything out of the ordinary or extraordinary…
May is National Inventors Month, a month-long event celebrating invention and creativity.
Let’s have a look at some of these inventions and creations:-
Something most of us cooks cannot do without …”The Oven“…The earliest ovens, found in Central Europe, date from 29,000 BC, and were used, at times, to cook mammoth…Jeez, the picture that conjures up…I so wish I was good at clip art or something…sigh
They were cooked in roasting pits inside a “yurt” pictured above which is made from animal skins…this is quite a fancy one but the early ones were quite basic but they did the job…and wouldn’t it be quite the party with a mammoth on the menu…
An oven looks quite different now ..sleek and shiny in our western kitchen with bells and whistles …sigh…and cleaning them is so much more of a chore …
Quickly moving on…
Did you know? The crunchiness in a cookie depends on a good balance of fat and dryness. Butter contributes milk solids and water to a cookie, both of which soften it. Brown sugar contributes molasses – again, a softener.
Using lower-moisture sugar (granulated) and fat (vegetable shortening), plus a longer, slower bake than normal, produces light, crunchy cookies.
That’s all for inventions but I will be continuing the theme in future posts with some more exciting inventions…
Now, what else is on the agenda…last week I followed a snake theme and I had fun linking snakes…this week just because and it’s all Pete Springers fault he was the one who instigated a little quirk on my A-Z’s and now he has spawned the thought for another post…Pickle Ball by Pete Springer…Jokes aside…Thanx Pete x
I mean is there anything you can’t pickle?
You can have fermented pickles, hot and sour pickles, Dill Pickles, sweet pickles, refrigerator pickles which are nicknamed “Quickles” and even Kool-Aid Pickles…
Now for obvious reasons I have used Kool-Aid to make pickles but for those of you who would..just because…
I think I will pass on these…
Did you know?
Let’s take this pickle theme a tad further…Pickle Lip Balm…Ummmm not for me…Pickle Mints…jury’s out on the one…Pickle Earrings..quirky…A pickle Light…Pickle Duct Tape…as I said there is nothing you can’t pickle…sigh
Now let’s bring some sanity and some music to this post…
Pickles is a drummer…This drummer is a percussionist for Dethklok and formally the singer and lead guitar of the band “Snakes N’ Barrells…There was no intended reference to last weeks post but…how cool is that…
I also had a choice and discovered bands I had never heard of before…like ” The Pickles”, “Skankin Pickles”, “7 foot Dilly”, “His Hot Pickles” and not forgetting ” Sweet Pickles”…..was I spoilt for choice? or was I shaking my head in disbelief?
Well…maybe it’s because I am old…but why would you?… I was just shaking my head in disbelief and so as not to disappoint my shortlist was two…Seven Foot Dilly or Joe Smith and his Spicy Pickles…
Seven Foot Dilly was a catchy tune and I can guess you know the music genre…I don’t mind a bit of Jazz…but…I just couldn’t…if you wish look them up..feel free…my advice don’t…
Instead, I opted for Damien Isaac Band And Pickleback…
What is a pickleback?
The main appeal of a pickleback is that the pickle brine is an incredibly effective chaser, instantly neutralizing the burn of any alcohol…Comprising of a shot of whisky and followed by a shot of pickle juice…
Let’s sweeten things up …
Pickle Cup Cakes...Anyone?
As of yet, I haven’t tried these…Have you?

In Russia, pickle brine is used not as a chaser but as hangover relief.

Even cabonated I hear tell…It seems pickles and juice around the world are used to cure a hangover in some form or another ..sauerkraut is also good…Have a great weekend, Dolly x

I use a mixture of both half and half so they have a little crunch on the outside but soft in the middle 🙂

I don’t like crunchy cookies. I like soft ones, which is why I always use brown sugar.

I have been inside a ‘real’ yurt during a short visit to Ulan Bator, in Mongolia. It was very much ‘for tourists’ I’m sure, but it was incredibly smelly inside, and they gave us small beakers of fermented Yak milk to drink. It was foul stuff, like rancid milk that had gone off days earlier. They laughed at the expressions on our faces when we couldn’t finish it!
Best wishes, Pete. x

A good experience, Pete… I don’t think I would fancy the Yak milk.. Enjoy the holiday weekend 😊 x

I would have preferred a good yurt oven with no cleaning. I bet ovens and cooking were more sophisticated many millenia ago than we imagine. No trace survives of the natural herbs they picked to throw on the mammoth and the roots they dug up to roast with it…

Me too, Janet that is one of the worst jobs ever…You are correct though I can’t find anything on Natural herbs and roots used back then I am guessing plants like dandelion, yarrow, sage, thyme which are mentioned quite a way back may have been some it would be really interesting to know for sure though…Have a great weekend 🙂 x
