Saturday Snippets…26th June 2021…Orange(s)…

Welcome to Saturday Snippets where I indulge my whimsy and my passions… maybe a tune or two…something which has caught my eye this last week…just anything out of the ordinary or extraordinary…

For the last few weeks, I have taken inspiration from something I have read or watched… this week thanx to Meeks and her eclectic mix of posts ...A science fiction writer and I must say I read Miira which is the first book of Innerscape and thoroughly enjoyed it…Meeka posted a recipe for an orange cake similar to one I have cooked …mine was a tad smaller… with fewer eggs…but nonetheless both equally as tasty methinks…Orange and Almond Cake

The Orange cake dates back to the Sephardi Jews from the Meditteranean Region circa the 15th Century with Iberian flavours like cinnamon and cardamon which sounds like a delicious addition there are also notes of North African and Spanish roots…

Hence my chosen prompt …Oranges

One of my favourite fruits both to eat and cook with…A vibrant coloured fruit …it lends itself to many things…so come with me and let’s explore the world of ORANGE…

Marigolds…my father used to plant marigolds among his cabbages they are one of the best known natural insect repellents …Planting marigolds attracts beneficial insects that attack and kill aphids…it seems my dad knew what he was doing…and he certainly didn’t use pesticides…what happened to common sense farming?

Orange blossom flowers have graced many a beautiful bridal bouquet…the oil is used in perfume making and orange blossom water is used in the culinary world…

The smell, when you open a bottle of orange blossom water, is intense! with an intense, warm taste they immediately bring the sun to your mouth. Delicate and complex…it is a beautiful aromatic.

Let’s have a tune…I won’t play anything political and I was a bit short on choices..you might need earplugs…sigh…lots of Japanese bands or dire girl bands…so rock it is…

Moving on…

As a child, we once had a beautiful ginger/orange tabby cat…called Sandy…

Then in the ’70s along came Garfield…GARFIELD the cat…Jon Arbuckle, his human owner; and Odie, the dog…my kids loved him we had Garfield everything..soft toys duvet covers…

Garfield is a fictional cat and the protagonist of the comic strip of the same name, created by Jim Davis. The comic strip centres on Garfield portrayed as a lazy but mischievous cat…

How not to make Lasagna…

Orange County...Greater Los Angeles…

Some of New York State’s biggest attractions are right here in Orange County, including West Point, Storm King Art Center, and Woodbury Common Premium Outlets. Orange County is just 50 miles from New York City, a place to dine on the Hudson River, visit wineries, raft the Delaware River, hike the Appalachian Trail, and spend the night with a view of beautiful mountains.

The Orange…

Oranges are one of the worlds most popular fruits…tasty and nutritious they are a good source of Vitamin C.many of us start the day with a glass of fresh orange often made from the lovely Navel Orange…There are dozens of types of oranges the most common of the sweet oranges being a Valencia Orange…

Then we get the beautiful blood oranges…one of our favourite dinners is Sticky Jerk Chicken with Blood Oranges….then there are mandarins, satsumas, clementines and tangerines…if you are making a marmalade the bitter Seville orange is the one to use…

Bergamot orange is grown primarily in Italy for its peel, which in turn is used in perfumes and also to flavour your Earl Grey cup of tea.

Orange is also the New Black…my son has recommended that I watch it but as of yet I haven’t…Have you?

My favourite Orange treat...Fry’s Orange Cream, a kit- kat orange, an orange espresso and if on the beach…

Did you know?

Orange is also an anime?…which I was told on asking my grandson is short for animation…

What is the anime about?

Orange is an anime about a group of friends, three boys and three girls, that go to school together. Two of the boys and three of the girls receive letters from their future selves that say they must save their friend from dying so that he can be with them in the future.

This anime focuses on “real” issues like depression, being suicidal, having suicidal thoughts, being regretful of your decisions, and the pain of losing your mother. It’s these reasons why orange is one of the saddest, emotional romance anime.

Apparently, you can watch it on “Crunchyroll” or if you change your Netflix region to Pakistan you can watch season 1…

Moving on…

Oranges also come in the form of beautiful Liqueurs…Cointreau or my fathers favourite Grand Marnier…I have some memories of an after-dinner digestif which is an alcoholic beverage served after a meal, to aid digestion… or we had one after a coffee course, it may be called pousse-café.

I miss my dad for those after-dinner drinks and a chat…he was old school and mealtimes were done properly…the little touches…the best times.x

That’s all for today…I hope you enjoyed this theme…Thank you Meeka for inspiring me x

we are again on the same page, darling – I love Cointreau. Have you come across raspberry oranges? They are dark red inside and not as sweet, but my grandkids love them, especially dipped in dark chocolate.

I know them as blood oranges although raspberry oranges does sound better… they get their colour from the same anthocyanin pigment that give raspberries their colour..Dipping them in chocolate sounds like a plan…. Hugs xx

You always manage to tie a lot of things together in your theme posts. There is nothing quite like the taste of a juicy orange, though I’ve never had much of an affinity for a tequila sunrise. I had never heard of this band, Orange, but I like their sound.

it is such a distinctive color; but I am impressed that you could write a whole blog about a color!

I never heard of the band Orange, but that wasn’t bad.

and our hometown ice hockey team, the Philadelphia Flyers, has team colors of orange, black, and white…

Thank you, Jim I was disappointed that most of the bands with an orange connection were either Japanese or Ulster based( The Irish ) troubles and I didn’t want to promote those…and so much food…but I didn’t want it to be all about food either…I hope I struck a balanced view…I had fun anyway…Have a great weekend xx

Orange is my wife’s favourite flavour. Orange Smarties, Terry’s Chocolate Orange, anything ‘orangey’. I think you missed out Jaffa Cakes though, Carol. No doubt they are hard to find in Thailand! 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete. x

I love your orange theme. I can no longer eat oranges, but clementine’s are safe. When I started teaching I had Garfield as my classroom theme. All the kids liked it. My grandma made a kick a** orange almond cake. Thinking of it makes me drool. Orange county is 15 minutes away from me. Nice communities, too right winged for me on the most part. I love dreamsicles , orange sherbet inside a vanilla ice cream cone. I have four seasons of Orange is the New Black on DVD, but haven’t seen them yet. A great post. Thanks for the memories.
