The Environmental A-Z…the letter N…Nuclear Waste…

Welcome to my Environmental A-Z…

The idea for this series came about because as my regular followers and commenters know I am passionate about the health of the world I am living in… however often when I am researching and reading articles I come across terms and words I don’t know and have to look them up which spawned the idea for this…two-fold… it increases my knowledge and I hope yours…

The A-Z of the environment and Climate Change… letter N.

Researching the letter N made me come to the conclusion that all our senses are under attack… our very existence… we are being assaulted on all fronts …I can count not just on one hand but on two..toes next… soon I will need a few more digits of people in my immediate family and friends who are suffering, undergoing treatment, dying or dead… not from Covid although there is that but from Cancer…my son thinks it is because we live longer and are more aware…

I think that may be one of the factors but I also believe that it is because of what is in the air and around us, the soil, the food we eat, the cosmetics we buy… the list is endless that therein lies the problem we need to urgently supply solutions.

Abraham Lincoln is correct we need to act now to create the future for our families that we want…but at the moment we can only dream of…

The best way to predict your future is to create it...Abraham Lincoln.

Natural Experiment…

Natural experiment, an observational study in which an event or a situation that allows for the random or seemingly random assignment of study subjects to different groups is exploited to answer a particular question.

An example:

Natural experiments are those events where an observer or researcher does not have control of the event. Most public health interventions, such as the implementation of tobacco control policies, can be considered a natural experiment.

Noise Pollution…

Noise pollution is generally defined as regular exposure to elevated sound levels that may lead to adverse effects in humans or other living organisms. … workplace sounds, often common in open-space offices. constant loud music in or near commercial venues. industrial sounds like fans, generators, compressors, mills.

The Human Cost of noise pollution…this shocked me …I have never thought about the health implications of this… probably because I have always lived in places which are relatively quiet…it seems for some people though that they are bombarded from all sides by circumstances often out of their control but which adversely affect their health and well being..children seem to be particularly at risk.

It doesn’t stop there either…

Our oceans are no longer quiet. Thousands of oil drills, sonars, seismic survey devices, coastal recreational watercraft and shipping vessels are now populating our waters, and that is a serious cause of noise pollution for marine life. Whales are among the most affected, as their hearing helps them orient themselves, feed and communicate. Noise pollution thus interferes with cetaceans’ (whales and dolphins) feeding habits, reproductive patterns and migration routes, and can even cause haemorrhage and death.

Other than marine life, land animals are also affected by noise pollution in the form of traffic, firecrackers etc., and birds are especially affected by the increased air traffic.

This article certainly gave me food for thought ...Noise Pollution is a subject I have never counted the cost of…

Noxious Gases…

A noxious gas or substance is poisonous or very harmful. Many household products give off noxious fumes…which are harmful to health and physical well being…

This is my scariest post to date …personally I have been researching, changing and testing products one at a time purely because it must be as close as possible whilst being safe plus also doing the job…glass I have cleaned for years with a vinegar solution and it works…

I am just wondering why as many of these videos were made years ago so it is a known problem…I was reading about weedkillers a few days ago and there have been successful legal cases however the company is still dragging its heels and hasn’t removed this product completely from the market or made the necessary changes…Why are they still in our homes and gardens…I can draw my own conclusions from that ..Can’t you?

Non-Renewable Sources…

As the name suggests nonrenewable resources are limited in supply and cannot be used sustainably. There are four major types of nonrenewable resources: oil, natural gas,  coal, and nuclear energy.

Unfortunately, human society is—for the time being—dependent on nonrenewable resources as its primary source of energy. Approximately 80 per cent of the total amount of energy used globally each year comes from fossil fuels. We depend on fossil fuels because they are energy-rich and relatively cheap to process.

The downside… a major problem with fossil fuels, aside from their being in limited supply, is that burning them releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Rising levels of heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the main cause of global warming.

Nuclear Waste…

If not properly well sealed inside steel and concrete, accidents and leaks can happen…There have been many incidences over the years where nuclear waste has just been dumped…make no mistake it is dangerous to life causing cancerous growths, for instance, or causing genetic problems for many generations of animals and plants.

This image looks scary but it is also a reality unscrupulous contractors or companies have been known to just dump or bury underground where it can seep into soil and water sources… Be aware and report…then get the hell out of there…

A major environmental concern related to nuclear power is the creation of radioactive wastes such as uranium mill tailings, spent (used) reactor fuel, and other radioactive wastes. These materials can remain radioactive and dangerous to human health for thousands of years.

Definitely my scariest post to date..I think the best place to live is on a desert island or the top of a mountain…

Make those changes before it is too late…

That’s all for today…See you tomorrow in my kitchen…Have a lovely day xxx

Thank you so much for this article, Carol!
Yes, we are really haunted by a lot of negative things. All things that were caused in the past and now need to be cleaned up, as far as possible. We have to work together in society, to keep life on this planet worth living. Let’s hope it works. I wish you a nice day! xx Michael

Definitely a scary post. And it’s no surprise why there are so many more cancers prevalent. I remember when I was a kid, ever only hearing about 2 people who died of cancer – it was a ‘rare’ thing back then, not the toxic cesspool the world has become. I don’t have a cupboard full of cleaning products. I use white vinegar with water in spray bottles and baking soda for hard scrubs. No doubt breathing in all that toxicity from cleaning products alone, can do a number on our health. ❤

Hi Carol, I agree with you that cancer is a lot more prevalent now. There are more people and we do live longer but it is still a lot more prevalent. It is because of all the poisons in our food, air, and everything else in our lives. We have to look after our own health.

Absolutely its sad fact of life, Robbie and it seems those who can make the changes don’t and won’t unless they absolutely have to..

I find if I go to the city even for a day I am stressed. I used to love being in the hustle and bustle but realise now that it was having a damaging impact on my physical and mental health. There is noise here in the country but usually it is organic. As to waste chemicals and nuclear the responsibility is multi-layered with the so called government oversight at the top of it. Terrific post Carol and will share in the blogger daily this evening.. ♥

There is no way to avoid it, unfortunately, and it had to be done to save the building which is part of the Art Deco area under all kinds of government regulations. My cousin suggested ear plugs, but then I will not hear the phone or my music, which is even more important.

Yes, this is a scary post with a reminder of why I take walks in our preserve, surrounded by trees and birdsong, which seems pretty pure to me. I control what I can: recycling and disposing of waste properly.

I’ll be happy to find you in the kitchen tomorrow, Carol!

Noise polution became a real issue for me during my last few years living in London. Between the traffic, helicopters, noisy neighbours, contruction sites and road works, I thought that combined cacophony would drive me insane. I was fortunate to be able to move to an incredibly quiet place, but I feel for the elderly people stuck in big cities.
    Best wishes, Pete. x
