Welcome back to Saturday Snippets..where I indulge my whimsy and have a play with one word prompts…My muse has answered me and this week my word is…Earth!…

Earth completes the trio of prompts covered over the last few weeks …Earth, Wind and Fire!… This brings me to one of my favourite bands of all time…I have listened danced to them over the years…this video showcases just how wonderful they are…Enjoy!

How can I follow this?…. From the very beginning, I suppose…

Earth Age…

Earth is estimated to be 4.54 billion years old, plus or minus about 50 million years. Scientists have scoured the Earth searching for the oldest rocks to radiometrically date.

Earth Ball…

It’s a fungus…a mushroom…not one that it’s advisable to eat this very common mushroom appears to be responsible for the most mushroom poisonings each year in the UK. This is possibly due to confusion with Common Puffballs or even Truffles…that is why before going foraging that has seen an upsurge in popularity it is important to know your fungi…

The inside of an Earthball is never pure white and is usually dark purple to black with a light rim…whose common names are… Poison Puffballs, Leopard Earthball, Scaly Earthball.

They look quite normal and edible until they are cut open…

Earth Horse 1978…

People born in 1978 is with the Chinese zodiac Horse sign and 1978 is with the Earth element based on Chinese Five Elements. So, people with Chinses zodiac Horse born in 1978 is the Earth-Horse.

Earthworm…

Children love playing with earthworms...Earthworms are hermaphrodites. Each has both male and female sex organs, but they cannot fertilize themselves. Earthworms spend most of their lives underground, creating complex burrow networks. They make an essential contribution to soil fertility and are therefore very important in gardens and farmland.

Earth’s largest Bird Species…

The Ostrich...Ostriches are the largest and heaviest birds in the world! Although they cannot fly, ostriches sure can run! … They are not particularly intelligent, but with the largest eyeball of any bird, they can see as far as 2.2 miles (3.5 km).

Salt has long been considered a valuable commodity, and this metaphor dates from biblical times. According to the Gospel of Matthew (5:13), Jesus told those who were persecuted for their loyalty to him, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” The term has been so used ever since.

If someone says “you are the salt of the earth”…it is a compliment…People who are described as ‘the salt of the earth‘ are those who are considered to be of great worth and reliability.

On March 14, 1954, the film Salt of the Earth premiered at the 86th Street Grande Theatre, the only theatre in New York City that would show the film. Based on the true events of the Empire Zinc Strike of 1951–52 in New Mexico, Salt of the Earth tells the story of striking miners, mostly Mexican Americans, in their fight for not only economic but also racial and gender justice.

Google Earth…

Both fascinates and scares me...Google Earth is a geobrowser that accesses satellite and aerial imagery, topography, ocean bathymetry, and other geographic data over the internet to represent the Earth as a three-dimensional globe. Geobrowsers are alternatively known as virtual globes or Earth browsers. Google also refers to Google Earth as a “geographic browser.”

The Greeks and Romans named most of the planets in the Solar System after particular gods, and we have kept those names in English. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, all unknown in classical times, were named by the modern astronomers who discovered them, but still after Greek and Roman gods.

Earth is the one exception. Its name, according to the official gazetteer of planetary discovery, comes from the Indo-European base ‘er’, which produced the Germanic noun ‘ertho’, the modern German ‘erde’, Dutch ‘aarde’, Danish and Swedish ‘jord’, and English ‘earth’.

Earth…

Earth, our home planet, is a world unlike any other. The third planet from the sun, Earth is the only place in the known universe confirmed to host life. With a radius of 3,959 miles, Earth is the fifth largest planet in our solar system, and it’s the only one known for sure to have liquid water on its surface.

Plain and simple earth…is our garden soil where we grow our roses or our veggies and fruit…

To successfully grow our plants we need to know our soil as it is different around the world …Basically, there are six main soil groups: clay, sandy, silty, peaty, chalky and loamy. They each have different properties and it is important to know these to make the best choices and get the most from your garden…

Soil colour is also important to pay attention to. Generally speaking, colours that indicate good soil are dark brown, red and tan. Dark brown suggests that the soil has a good percentage of organic matter. Red reflects the oxidized iron content of the soil, while tan indicates a combination of organic matter and iron.
