Welcome to Saturday Snippets ..my one-word prompt today is “First” that was a given really, wasn’t it?….as it’s the start of a New Year…The year 2022!

There are so many “Firsts” I hope you enjoy my pick of firsts…

First Footing…

In Scottish, Northern English, and Manx folklore, the first foot is the first person to enter the home of a household on New Year’s Day and is seen as a bringer of good fortune for the coming year. Similar practices are also found in Greek and Georgian new year traditions.

First Aid Kit…

The Birth of the First Aid Kit…A fateful conversation inspired the creation of Johnson & Johnson’s First Aid Kit, which was released in 1888. Aboard a train heading to Colorado for vacation, company founder Robert Wood Johnson struck up a conversation with the Denver & Rio Grande Railway’s chief surgeon.

The doctor explained to Johnson the dangers of railroad construction and the lack of medical supplies to treat the unique industrial injuries that were often incurred great distances from hospitals. From this exchange, Johnson saw an opportunity to both advance the field of healthcare and build his young business. And from this modern need, the commercial First Aid Kit was born.

First Blood… “Rambo” Sylvester Stallone’s iconic Rambo First Blood was released in the year 1982…jeez 30 years ago and it seems like only yesterday when “Rambo” hit our screens…

Rambo First Blood is a 1982 American action-drama that revolves around a troubled and usually misunderstood veteran soldier named Rambo who gets into trouble when a small-town sheriff triggers his violent side. He is traumatized by the memories of the Vietnam War.

The motorcycle chases and the fights…the media was a frenzy…all the little boys wanted Rambo toys and a bandana…subsequently, another 4 films were released … Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), Rambo III (1988), Rambo (2008) and Rambo: Last Blood (2019).

The Wright Brothers first flight…

The Wright brothers – Orville and Wilbur – were two American aviation pioneers generally credited with inventing, building, and flying the world’s first successful motor-operated aeroplane.

Wind, sand, and a dream of flight brought Wilbur and Orville Wright to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina where, after four years of scientific experimentation, they achieved the first successful aeroplane flights on December 17, 1903.

Not to be outdone by the men...May 21, 1932, Amelia Earhart earned her place on the list of high-flying adrenaline junkies when she became the first woman aviator to pilot a solo transatlantic flight. She was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross by the U.S. Congress.

The First James Bond Movie…

The very first James Bond movie was Dr No…released on May 8 1963…OO7 was played by Sean Connery…who in my mind was the best James Bond…closely followed by Pierce Brosnan…Who was/is your favourite special agent????

Special Agent James Bond (007) after all these years still causes a media frenzy …we are now waiting to see who will replace Daniel Craig…I have my list (top 3) will I be correct? Probably not as generally the role goes to someone little known and not touted as a front runner…we shall see…

First Time Ellie Golding…

First fish to walk on land…

The earliest fish potentially capable of walking on land is Tiktaalik roseae, a species of sarcopterygian that lived approximately 375 million years ago, during the late Devonian Period, in what is today the Canadian Arctic. Its pectoral fins possessed primitive wrist bones not seen in true fishes but present in tetrapods, and the fins themselves were notably muscular, with massively constructed scapulae and coracoids, as well as functional elbows, all of which would have enabled it to support itself upon them when standing in shallows, and moving about briefly on land if need be. Again, like tetrapods but unlike most fishes, its neck was capable of movement independent of its body, and its powerful ribcage coupled with spiracles on top of its head suggests that it possessed lungs as well as gills. Consequently, it is deemed to be a transitional fossil species, linking true fishes to tetrapod amphibians.

Cheese...

A 2018 scientific paper stated that the world’s oldest cheese, dating to approximately 1200 BCE (3200 years before present), was found in ancient Egyptian tombs. The earliest cheeses were likely quite sour and salty, similar in texture to rustic cottage cheese or feta, a crumbly, flavourful Greek cheese.

The First Text…

Texting is practically as essential to modern life as water and taquitos and you have Neil Papworth to thank for your cramped fingers. On December 3, 1992, he was working on developing SMS for Vodafone and sent the first text. What did he send? “Merry Christmas!”

The First Olympic Gold Medal…

First gold medal in the Olympics

The 1904 Olympics have the honour of being the Games when gold medals as first-place prizes were first introduced. And they were quite the prize: The medals were cast from solid gold. At least they were until 1912, at which point it was deemed too expensive. From then until the present day first place medals are cast in silver and then coated in gold.

The First Giant Squid to be Captured.

Archie, a 28-foot giant squid, was accidentally caught in a fishing net in March 2004. (We bet those were some startled fishermen!) While many people had claimed to have seen a giant squid, he was the first giant squid to be captured. He didn’t survive long, sadly, but you can see him displayed at the London Natural History Museum—well, there or in your nightmares.

The first Toilet Roll…

Do you think people who don’t wash their hands after using the toilet are gross now? Today we at least have toilet paper; in centuries past people used to just use their actual hands (and there was no antibacterial soap). You can thank Joseph Gayetty for this modern sanitation miracle. In 1857, he invented the first toilet paper that was the precursor to the toilet paper we use in the U.S. today. He named it “medical paper” and claimed it was “The Greatest Necessity of the Age.”

Finally…Not one first but two firsts and she was female…

Winning one Nobel prize is considered an amazing lifetime accomplishment but winning two of the distinguished awards?

Leave it to Marie Curie, the famous scientist, to be the first person to ever win two Nobel prizes when she won the Physics prize in 1903 and the Chemistry prize in 1911.

    and two of these were just in a crossword puzzle I did this week – the first James Bond movie and the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.

    Super, Carol. The first “first” that popped into my mind was the Wright Brothers. And there never was a better James Bond than Sean Connery. Thank you for the science entry, toilet paper and Madame Curie. Happy New Year!

    The Romans had sponges ( real sponges ) on sticks I believe, so as long as they didn’t share them… The first bidets were fresh mountain streams – I made that up, but could be true. Happy New Year Carol, hoping it brings only positive things for you.

    My dad had a very dark complexion, giving him a mediterranean appearance. When we used to visit friends in Scotland for Hogmanay, he was much in demand to be the ‘first-footer’ in all the houses in that street. As I recall, he had to carry a lump of coal over each threshold, and was rewarded with a large whisky. By the time he got back to the friend’s house, he could hardly stand up!

        I’ve just never taken to her, or forgiven her for her soulless cover of a beautiful Waterboys song! If the Rod song they blocked was The First Cut Is The Deepest that really is a crime! Quiet days are often the best, aren’t they. HNY 2U2 😊 xx

    I’m afraid that if First Blood came out in 1982, that would make it 40 years old. That’s wild! I wonder if the great toilet paper debate (over vs. under) has been around since its inception. Who knew that people would be buying the stuff by the case when Covid came around?
