Welcome to Monday Musings…which could be anything that has happened throughout the last week, something I have read or watched, could be a pet peeve or almost anything.. welcome to my world!
It’s the last day of January today…Jeez, time just fly’s by…What is February going to bring…sunshine here and snow elsewhere methinks for those of us on opposite sides of the world…February comes from the Latin word februa, which means “to cleanse.”
February 1 marks the Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year. This year is the Year of the Tiger! …the beautiful red and gold banners are very where here it looks so festive and the fireworks have already started…Luckily I have a dog who loves fireworks …crazy dog…
Of course, we have Valentine’s Day on the 14th…A full Snow Moon on the 16th, 19th-27th is Real Bread week…there is nothing like real bread is there..hot from the oven…
Who remembers collecting the bottles and taking them back to the shops as kids and then getting some cashback??
Do you have a similar scheme where you live that has bottles and cans on a deposit scheme? If you live in Germany, there is a bottle return system. When you purchase certain products, you pay a deposit (Pfand) for the bottle. When you return the empty bottle, you get your deposit back. This encourages people to return their empty bottles. The empty bottles are then reused or recycled.
This is the first time I have heard this…I truly can’t remember if utube recommended it when I was browsing or whether I saw it on another blog…I apologise if that’s the case to whoever introduced this singer to me …I forgot to make a note…just give me a shoutout…he has a powerful voice and is well worth a listen…
Food…You all know I can cook…my mother always told me” the way to man’s heart is through his stomach”…However over the centuries food and drink have long been a dependable method of poisoning…I found this little snippet under “Weaponised Food” in Gastro Obscura…A Food Adventurers Guide…it is a fascinating book…more like an encyclopedia..yes I am an information nerd…
The tale I found funny.. I have a warped sense of humour…lol …was the tale of the “Cheese Cannonballs”…In 1841, Uruguayan Navy Commodore John H.Coe ran out of cannonballs during battle. Commodore Coe remembered a stock of cheeses that hadn’t aged well…it was so hard, a lieutenant had broken a knife trying to cut it. Coe loaded the cannonball with the said compacted Edam cheese and fired away…The outcome was the cheese cannonballs struck the main mask, tore holes through the sails and flew through a porthole killing two men. The Argentinians retreated…and the battle was won…
That’s all for Monday Musings today...I hope you all have a fabulous and productive week x
Nicely written story 🙏🙂

I’m betting you’ve already seen the accompanying video of Sounds of Silence, but if you haven’t, here it is. Powerful and moving. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4

We always collected the empty bottles to take back for the deposit money. That was how most of us bought our sweets in my childhood in London. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Interesting Monday musings Carol. Here in Canada, yes we can deposit money and then when we return we get back the deposit. This is for organic milk from whole food stores and even for alcohol from some stores.

Apparently Paul Simon is on record as saying he liked that version of his song. I beg to differ with the great man: this is abominable, and the guy can’t sing to save his life! 😂 x

Clive!…we’ll have to agree to disagree then as I really love his voice but each to their own it would be a boring world if we all agreed …Have a lovely week 🙂 x
