Welcome to Saturday Snippets ..my one-word prompt today is “Hand”
Where did the word “Hand” come from? It is like every one-word prompt my muse just drops it in my lap…then the fun begins…lol…our hands are comprised of moveable parts our fingers and thumbs… fascinating when you think of what people can do with their hands…what kiddie doesn’t love painting with their hands…or making a heart with your fingers…or and we used to love this making animal shapes, especially at night…and most importantly sign language which I believe should be taught to all children in schools…
All Hands(on deck)…
An entire ship’s company…a cry or signal used on board ship, typically in an emergency, to indicate that all crew members are to go on deck.
Bad Finger…
Handfish…
True to their name, the handfishes are a family of fishes that walk with their oversized “hands” rather than swim.
There are fourteen handfish species in total, all of which are found only in southern Australia – predominantly in Tasmania.
Very little is known about handfish in general, but we do know that the Spotted, Red, and Ziebell’s handfish are critically endangered and are faced with increasing levels of habitat destruction and loss, pollution, and changing climate.
The good news is that although previously scientists had thought the fish was a shallow-water species that lived in sheltered bays – it has now been found at a depth of 150m (390 ft) off Tasmania’s wild south coast…it seems like this elusive fish is adapting to the climate…
The Golden Bridge…Vietnam.
The Golden Bridge is a 150-metre-long pedestrian bridge in the Bà Nà Hills resort, near Da Nang, Vietnam. It is designed to connect the cable car station with the gardens and to provide a scenic overlook and tourist attraction…
More than 1,400m above sea level… Its green hands have been aged as if they’ve been there for centuries…I would love to see this it must be quite spectacular…
Of course, there have been many songs written about Hands…”You need hands sung by Max Bygraves and also by the Sex Pistols…
Slightly different to the Max Bygrave version…Selena Gomez sang ” Hands to Myself”…Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds… sang “Red Right Hand’ …Niall Horan sang ” Slow Hands ” Jess Glynne with “Hold My Hand”…” Hands Held High by Linkin Park…
Did you Know?
Thumbs Away...During the Gallic wars, Julius Caesar ordered the thumbs of captured warriors amputated so that when they returned to their country, they would serve as examples and be unable to bear arms again. This practice was later used in a number of wars and in the slave trade.
A hand is a unit of length equal to 4 inches; when measuring horses.
A hand is…the cards held in a card game by a given player at any given time.
“Cold hands, warm heart” Well, it really depends on why one’s hands are cold…
The skin on the palm side of the hand and fingers is unique for these reasons and more:
- No hair (the medical term is glabrous).
- Fingerprints.
- Usually, neither colour nor have the ability to tan.
- Tough and durable, yet sensitive.
- Anchored down to the bones beneath through an intermediate layer of fascia. This arrangement keeps the skin of the palm from sliding around like a rubber glove when we use our hands to grip and twist.
Cheese of the Hand…
Is a type of queso fresco commonly eaten in Venezuela. It is made by a mix of cows and sheep’s milk. It is used as a filling for arepas and cachapas. It has a similar taste to mozzarella.
Who remembers ” Hands, Kneese and Boomps a Daisy…
The song Hands, Knees and Boomps-a-Daisy was written by Annette Mills and was first recorded by Joe Loss and His Band and sung by Annette herself in 1939. Being a very active number it is still played today and very much enjoyed by children…I remember my mother singing this to us and we had such fun …we always ended up on the floor laughing…
That’s all for Saturday Snippets I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend as always I look forward to your comments see you tomorrow where I will be rounding up the week’s posts…the time seems to be flying by…xx

I love your opening quote from Indira Gandhi. Also enjoyed all your other snippets about hands, especially the handfish which I hadn’t heard of before.

With ‘cold hands,’ you have reminded me of the first Russian Cheka (secret police) commissar Felix Dzerzhinsky of evil memory, whose slogan was “Clean hands, fiery heart, and cold mind.”
Also, the Golden Bridge with green hands just blew me away!

I find the Golden Bridge beyond fascinating. I can add another song, “If You’re Happy and You Know it Clap Your Hands.” It’s a classic children’s song. And Pete was right- “I Want to Hold Your Hand” by the Beatles. I’ll be playing my 1964 Beatles record album with this song for the children. Super post, Carol!

One of the classic “hand” songs you didn’t mention was “I Want to Hold Your Hand” by the Beatles. I haven’t heard the Bad Finger song in quite some time, but that’s a good one. I’ve never seen a photo of the bridge in Vietnam before, but I sure like the architect’s idea. My wife’s uncle used to be on a crew that painted the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. I remember he said that when they’d get to the end of the bridge, it was time to start repainting the other side.

Carol, I shared a story about the hands bridge and would love to see it in person…also Badfinger was a “cursed” band: their biggest hit song “Without You” was made a hit by Harry Nilsson!

I had that Badfinger record on a vinyl.45. 🙂
The bridge is impressive, I first saw that on John Rieber’s blog.
My family always used to sing ‘Hands, Knees, and Boomps-a-Daisy’ at parties. Us kids would copy the dance as they did it.
Best wishes, Pete. x

I have to hand it to you, I enjoyed this post. And two of the songs as well. Hands down, for me the best was the Sex Pistols – such a brilliant version of a really cheesy song!
