Saturday Snippets…26th March 2022…Mother…”A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take.”…Cardinal Meymillod.

Welcome to Saturday Snippets ..my one-word prompt today is “Mother ”

Where did the word “Mother ” come from? It is like every one-word prompt my muse just drops it in my lap…then the fun begins…lol…Seriously though it seemed apt as Mothers Day is tomorrow…

What does the word mother conjure up for you? It is Mothering Sunday in the UK and Ireland tomorrow and although I think of my mother every day my thoughts linger longer on Mothers Day…My mum when she was in service…she was a nanny and a very pretty one as well…

Mum when she was in service to Major Elwell.

Come with me and see what else I connected to “Mother ”

Mother Earth…

Earth is the only planet in our solar system not named after a Greco-Roman deity. The name used in Western academia during the Renaissance was Tellus Mater or Terra Mater, the Latin for “earth mother”, i.e. “Mother Earth”, goddess of the earth in ancient Roman religion and mythology.

Did you know?

The mother liquor is the solution remaining after a component has been removed by some process such as filtration or more commonly crystallization. It is encountered in chemical processes including sugar refining…Molasses is made from the mother liquor produced by the cane sugar refining process.

The five French mother sauces are béchamel, velouté, espagnole, hollandaise, and tomato. Developed in the 19th century by French chef Auguste Escoffier, mother sauces serve as a starting point for a variety of delicious sauces used to complement countless dishes, including veggies, fish, meat, casseroles, and pasta…all classically trained chefs are taught how to make these sauces which are the basis of most sauces…

Mother of Vinegar…Today, popular uses of the mother of vinegar include losing and controlling weight, improving digestion, and soothing dry, sore throats. Some people also use it externally to soothe the pain of sunburn, prevent dandruff or itchy scalp, and maintain healthy skin.

Mother Yeast…Mother yeast, also called natural yeast, acid yeast, sourdough, natural leavening, natural leavening dough, mother dough, is a mixture of flour and water acidified by a combination of yeast and lactic acid bacteria that start fermentation of bakery or pastry dough.

Can you see the connections here to “mother” there are too many to quote but there is a recurring theme…quite simply the “mother” reproduces…

Mother of thousands (Kalanchoe daigremontiana) provides an attractive foliage houseplant. Though rarely blooming when kept indoors, the flowers of this plant are insignificant, with the most interesting feature being the baby plantlets continually appearing on the tips of the large leaves.

I think it is a pretty plant but it can be invasive and is best grown in a pot either indoors or outdoors if you want flowers as they do not flower if kept indoors.

Mother of Pearl…

Mother-of-pearl shell is commonly believed to attract prosperity and is often used in mystical work and lore to heighten intuition, psychic sensitivity and imagination. It is believed that mother-of-pearl shell offers soothing, motherly protection from negative energy and love…as children we used to love to wander the seashore and collect these pretty shells with their iridescent colours.

Mother Cows Are Especially Defensive…especially when they have babies…

Cows were recently declared the most dangerous large animals in Britain, killing more people than dogs—74 over a span of 15 years. Some of these rampaging bovines were bulls, but many were mother cows. Most victims were farm workers, but passersby also ran afoul of the cow moms, which is why the government is begging farmers not to pen naturally aggressive new mother cows in publically accessible fields, where unaware human walkers may be mistaken for calf-hungry predators.

Dog walkers especially may provoke the attacks—in 17 out of 18 human walker deaths by a cow, dogs were involved. Even non-fatal cow attacks amount to a type of “high-velocity trauma,” a ten-year review of hospital injuries found.

Did you Know?

Some of the worst mothers in movie history include Mrs Robinson in The Graduate, Margaret White in Carrie, Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest, Aunt Petunia in Harry Potter, the Queen Mother in Aliens, and Norma Bates in Psycho.

That’s all for today…I hope all you mothers out there who celebrate Mothers Day have a wonderful Day…As always I appreciate and look forward to your comments…xx

Happy Mother’s Day, Carol! I also fully agree to Dolly’s comment. Thanks for sharing so many interesting information about the term “mother”. I never had thought there is so much to find. Otherwise we are calling the earth our mother. Without mothers we all would not be on this earth. Enjoy a beautiful day! xx Michael

I was not familiar with that Pink Floyd song – but it was wonderful.

loved that mother bird video – don’t mess with her!

my sister married a dairy farmer, and she had lots of stories about how mean the cows could be, not only to each other, but to people…

I agree my grandad was a dairy farmer…happy you enjoyed Pink Floyd as much as I do…never a good idea to get between a mother and her babies/eggs as that clip showed she was not going to move …

I just blogged about my mother yesterday. I keep asking myself, “How did I get so lucky?” The bond between mother and child is as strong as any I know.

Wonderfully informative post on mothers, Carol. I knew well of the ‘mother’ in apple cider vinegar, but you have enlightened us to so many more. Thank you. ❤ Happy Mother's Day xx

We were happily walking back along a coastal path ( edge of the cliff! ) with the children years ago when the cows that had been far away on the outward journey suddenly started walking towards us. The gap between large cows and the cliff drop seemed very narrow. We made it to the next stile and the other side of a wonderfully stout wall. If I had known then that cows do kill people I would have been very scared! At the time I was reassured by the thought that a public footpath would not run through a field of cows if there was any risk and anyway, cows are docile…

That was lucky, Janet.. Cows can if they have mind surround you and then they move in and that’s you crushed.. Yet they look so placid….
