Welcome to Monday Musings we are mid-way through August already I can’t believe how fast time just flies…it really will soon be time to make the Christmas puddings and cake…Just saying!… Can openers I don’t buy many foodstuffs in cans but do have a few in my store cupboard and although most have a ring pull…very occasionally I need a tin opener and that’s where the problem starts they are crap here..truly however I did bring one back from the Uk that hopefully lasts for as long as I need a tin opener but I came across this little hack and thought if needs be… I’ll resort to this…
Every day I spend a little time when I first sign just checking my mail and the news… I was quite disturbed when I read an article online about a restaurant receiving hate mail and verbal insults..there is too much of this and it irks me…” freedom to choose” we have that right some don’t so we are lucky but we don’t have the right to dictate what a person or restaurant should do…
I openly admit I will never be vegan...because I believe in a balanced diet…that is my view and my choice…I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and cook vegetable dishes. that I enjoy…I have cut down on the amount of meat I eat for my health..my choice…my health…my husband and grandson whom I cook for daily are meat eaters…I don’t impose my views or refuse to cook meat-forward meals for them..ok it’s more cooking for me…they eat most veggie dishes I make…they are not keen on lentils but that’s their choice and their health…
If a restaurant decides they do not offer vegan foods or only one option on their menu that is their choice…our choice if vegan is to go where we have a choice…It is not to throw our toys out of the pram and abuse the restaurant staff…the same goes for the TV there is an off switch and we can also change channels…we have a choice BUT our personal choice or lifestyle should not be forced on others and they should not be subject to abuse because of their choices…
If I saw a vegan restaurant and decided to eat there would I kick off and be abusive because they don’t cater for my choices, of course, I wouldn’t…Why would I?… I would choose a restaurant that does…
I do not understand (or) want to understand the mindset of people who seem intent on causing discord and upset…Just because they can!
Differences are what make for an inclusive society and we should all be striving for that…live in harmony and enjoy learning about the differences in culture, food and cooking methods what a colourful and rewarding life that could be…Nuff said…
Let’s have a tune!
Thank you for joining me today…as always I look forward to your comments …I hope you all have a lovely productive and happy week Carol xx
Thanks Carol for the can opening hack.. hopefully never to the point where needed but useful to have.. I agree about restaurants and I do think that people who create scenes feel they don’t have power in their own lives and it is their chance to throw their weight around.. Some are just plain nasty. I am sure that like me you met quite a few in the hospitality business and you cannot please some people whatever you do. They just look like plonkers and today with everyone with video on their phones they usually end up on Facebook for all the world to see.. ♥

Absolutely Sally, I just think as much as I like many vegetarian and vegan dishes that some vegetarians/vegans are very intolerant if it is not what they choose to eat,,What happened to choice for everyone its being eaten away,,,Thank goodness for mobile phones and social media as you say….And the can opening hack is on my back burner hopefully never to be used(apart)from when I check it works Hugs xx

So very well said, Carol! I have found that we become what our actions dictate. When we abuse others, we also abuse ourselves. It is a vicious and terrible cycle. Choosing kindness allows us to live in joy and hope, which is something that you do everyday! I enjoy our conversations.

Hi Carol, I am the same as you. I am open to difference and just make the best of things if there are no alternatives. We picked a vegan restaurant by accident during our Scotland visit and so we all ate vegan. It was fine and quite fun. I don’t know when personal freedom to chose became only if your choice agrees with the majority or even the minority, in some cases. We are living in a weird society when individuals think their rights to do certain things can overrule the rights of the majority to have better health, freedoms, etc.

I am disappointed: I thought the Russian was going to open that can with a Kalashnikov pictured on his shirt (LOL).
Thank you for the music, dear Carol!

Haha, dear Dolly ..No… it was a good tip and not a Kalashnikov in sight 🙂

Have you tried it? I don’t always trust Russian tips. Eventually, one ends up looking at the tip of a Kalashnikov.

Completely agree with you on the question of choice. How can we be proud of being individuals when we ask everyone else to conform to /us/?
On a less serious note, thanks for the Russian hack. I do have a can opener, but one day I’m going to try that trick just to see if someone with small hands, i.e. a woman or a child, would be able to do what those big, burly guys did. After all, one has to be prepared for the zombie apocalypse…I think I’m joking. 🙂

I hope you are, Andrea but one never knows and I’m going to get a small tin with no ring pull and do the same as you as it looks as if it could work but as you say they were big boys…lol

I just had a quick look in my pantry, and I don’t have a single can that isn’t ring-pull. I fear this experiment will have to wait until I can physically visit a supermarket again. Really does make you wonder how /long/ they rubbed that can against the concrete, doesn’t it?

Loved the video on the opening of the can… 🙂
And likewise.. I have many days of meat free, and I was a vegetarian for several years. but I became ill, it didn’t suit me. I eat plenty of freshly grown veggies and eat lots of fruit etc.. And red meat rarely.
My Daughter is now Total Vegan, going from vegetarian,. and healthy… it suits her….
We do what our bodies intuitively feels is right for us.. But she does struggle with finding good places to serve Vegan food… and many do not understand true Vegan means no Dairy etc.. But she then goes for salad on a menu etc…. Its not rocket science .. She doesn’t throw a tantrum lol…
I so agree with you Carol…. People today are so selfish and demanding things go there way… So I am in complete agreement with you Carol when you said
“If I saw a vegan restaurant and decided to eat there would I kick off and be abusive because they don’t cater for my choices, of course, I wouldn’t…Why would I?… I would choose a restaurant that does…”…..
Exactly….. Well said Carol ❤

What I liked: The Russian guy demonstrating how to open a can without a can opener. Info may come in handy one day.

I like that can opener hack – might have to give it a try.
And I don’t understand the bashing of any business because they did not have what you are looking for. But some vegans do get a bit testy…

So much of this discord right now seems to be fanned by those who seem to be empowered to spread fear. Such difficult times.

I liked the tin-opening on a stone, never seen that.
But I think there should be a law that nobody is allowed to mention Christmas until the 1st of November! 🙂
Best wishes, Pete. x

I am also not keen on lentils, unless they are in soup. I agree, it is so unnecessary for people to be abusive!

Absolutely, Tandy there is too much verbal abuse going on now over peoples choices 🙂
