We must say no to kitchen waste…as you know I abhor waste, especially food waste 27 million tons per year…This number is even more striking, given the large number of hungry people in the world. Wasted food is not only inefficient, it’s a social justice issue. Global food waste has an enormous environmental impact, too.
Food waste is a huge source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and wasted natural resources. We all need to do our part individually its a drop in the ocean collectively it’s a continent…
I pride myself on cutting waste where I can but I am sure I can do more…I am taking the challenge …Will you?

As you know I am passionate about food waste and food safety i.e I want my family to eat chemical-free food BUT with the increase in take away(out) food since the arrival of covid there are many ways your food can become contaminated…and this is one of them below…
Many people believe that it is safe to heat food in Styrofoam in the microwave. However, the truth is that it is not safe and can release harmful chemicals into your food. These chemicals can cause cancer. Additionally, these chemicals have been linked to health problems such as cancer, reproductive issues, and endocrine disruption. Plus, it’s not the most effective way to reheat food… To read the original post please click here
Thank you for joining me today I hope you have a wonderfully productive week…as always I look forward to your comments…xx

Yuck! I’m so glad I gave away my microwave years ago. The few times we get takeaway it’s pizza and comes in a cardboard box. We’re starting to pay an unacceptable price for the convenience of plastics of all kinds.

We certainly are Andrea.. I haven’t used or owned one for the last 18+years and honestly there is nothing the microwave can do that I can’t albeit it may cost me a little more time but I would rather sacrifice a little time for health..

And flavour! Thinking back, I only ever really used our microwave to thaw frozen meat or reheat something. I actually think meat tastes better if it’s allowed to thaw slowly in the fridge. Don’t miss the microwave at all. 🙂

Having once worked in a restaurant, the amount of food that gets tossed is mind-boggling. One of the reasons I respect you is your commitment to the Earth is admirable, Carol.

Thank you, Pete and you are correct restaurants are one of the biggest culprits followed by home waste as we are too, unfortunately…I hope you have a lovely Sunday, Pete 🙂 x

Food waste is nothing short of criminal. You should talk to some of the Leningrad blockade survivals about it. I saw them cringe in horror when watching American “pie-in-the-face” comedies.

I agree about criminal, Dolly.. with regards to waste.. I just looked up the Leningrad blockage it was beyond horrific..

Yes, those survivors start shaking if you want to toss a bread crumb into garbage.

It doesn’t bear thinking about the horrors those survivors endured and those who didn’t survive had to endure …

How about my mother who was 10 years old when the evacuation train was bombed and only a few people survived, she among them? She had to spend 5 years in the hospital and undergo over 80 surgeries on her leg and foot, but they saved her foot, even though it ended up deformed. Any war is a horror!

No child should have to suffer that ..the injuries and being a survivor must have been forever etched in your mother’s mind its terrible just thinking about the horrors let alone being part of the horror and surviving…

You are like me, Sue but looking at the stats that obviously isn’t the case everywhere unfortunately we live in a throwaway society with many having no thought for the environmental consequences xx

I know supermarkets biggest wasters sell by dates throw aways tons.
Maybe when food gets scarce people may respect it more 🤷♀️ or if they had to work to harvest it after nurturing it to grow.
Sending love Carol… we can only plant the seeds my friend in hearts and minds 💕💖💕

I would never heat anything in Styrofam. I hate the stuff to begin with. As for food waste, I checked the fridge before going shopping. All that as left was one large onion, two portobello mushrooms, and a few potatoes. I rarely if ever waste any food, as I plan each meal in advance.
Best wishes, Pete. x

thanks for that info about not reheating food in Styrofoam; I’ve probably done that a few times…

You are welcome, Jim… I didn’t know exactly all the details of how dangerous it could be… luckily I don’t own or use a microwave or I might have done the same..

As a family we all disposed of our microwaves when my eldest daughter was diagnosed with cancer some 18 yrs ago and to be honest I can say I have never missed it… 😀

was the microwave to blame for the cancer?

My eldest son did a lot research and at the time Donnas cancer was a rare one and they had no known treatment she was asked if she would go on a trial and obviously said yes if it would help others… What in their words they threw at her worked! For 18 yrs she was cancer free… For Sean his research came up with too many “could”and ” may” in some people that we decided as a family we would take this step there were too many variables like the styrofoam and plastic wrap etc etc… Maybe now they are safer.. Who knows? Bottom line I don’t actually miss it, Jim..

that was amazing to be cancer free for so long, and then have it come back. I hope she is doing ok…
there is so many uncertainties surroudning cancer – what causes, how to treat it, etc. I hope they figure things out soon…

Fingers crossed Jim she is..thank you… Its just the uncertainty… So much research is being done and survival stats are so much higher..

I am glad she is doing well; that’s good news about the survival stats…
