CarolCooks2…New Years Eve 2022…Traditions around the World…

Welcome to CarolCooks 2 on the last day of 2023…some of you will be on your annual winter holidays, some of you will be working, and some of you will be alone…but being alone does not always mean being lonely some of you will be just enjoying the peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of a busy Christmas and drawing a breath before you get your glad rags on to celebrate the incoming year…

If you are in New York…

Wherever you are celebrating in the world there are bound to be fireworks, music and parties as the clock counts down from the weird to the wonderful I’m sure most of you will be happy to see the old year out and the new year in…much of the celebrations involve music and bells…in Japan then at midnight on December 31, 108 bells ring out all over Japan. The practice is called Joya-no-Kane and the bells are rung to bring in the New Year … The number of chimes represents what is known in Buddhism as “earthly desires” that according to tradition number 108…

If you are in Ireland as the clock strikes 12 then it’s time to be banging those pots and pans to ward off the evil spirits and negativity…in some parts of the world, however, they don’t just make a wish, they consume it. In a tradition traced back to Russia, some families write their wishes for the New Year on scraps of paper, which they then set on fire and put in their glass of drink. It is then customary to drink the ashes as the clock strikes its twelfth chime.

I think I prefer to eat cake as the Danes do…There is no celebration without a cake in Denmark! or in my world…Kransekage is a marzipan cake, usually eaten on special occasions such as weddings, baptisms or New Year’s eve…and some even jump chairs not sure if it’s before or after the cake…

In bonnie Scotland they celebrate Hogmanay…When the clock strikes midnight, people greet each other with traditional toasts such as “Lang may yer lum reek”. This is Scots for ‘long will your chimney smoke’, and is a wish for good fortune.

Auld Lang Syne, a poem by Scotland’s most famous poet Robert Burns, has become the soundtrack for New Year around the world. At every Scottish ceilidh or Hogmanay party, people gather in a circle to link arms and belt out the lyrics after the clock strikes 12.

On New Year’s Eve, it’s traditional for British households to gather waiting for the bells of Big Ben, the clocktower at the Houses of Parliament, to ring in the New Year as midnight strikes,” As the bells toll, don’t be surprised if a huge circle forms, people link hands, and start singing a traditional song called ‘Auld Lang Syne.’”…I do miss singing in the New Year…and who better to introduce “Old Lang Syne” my favourite rocker…

I just love the sound of the bagpipes this is a perfect introduction for those of you who don’t know how we Brits bring in the New Year…Rod Stewart and the bagpipes…

Wishing all of my readers a very Happy and most importantly Healthy New Year…I have appreciated every one of your visits, comments and shares this last year…and I hope to see you in 2023…xx

Interesting to read about some of the origins of New Year’s traditions. We’re batoning down the hatches. Our dog does horribly with fireworks, which always seems to be part of this event though not in the category of Independence Day.

That is such a shame my dog loves fireworks we have to stop him from trying to play with them..he’s weird…I think it’s because fireworks go off frequently here that dogs are used to them or maybe he is just weird….we stayed in and didn’t venture out in fact most people I know spent New Eve at home …Although I am sure there were revellers in the capitals of the world…Happy New Year, Pete 🙂

I hope that your Thai new year is a good one. It must almost be time over there. I can understand how visiting ‘home’ unsettled you, but I think you are better off where you are at the moment.
My very best to you and your family, as always.

Just after 4.30 here and I’m wondering if there is anything worth watching on tv tonight – I think there will be bagpipes at some point! HNY2U2 xx

That well-known half-Scot from London. I hope you were listening to his earlier stuff: for me that is far better than his later albums. Happy 2023! xxx

Hi Carol, what a lovely version of Auld Lang Syne by my favourite singer. It reminds me of my roots and heritage which I’m thinking about often lately as South Africa slips deeper into corruption and political decay.

I am sure the UK will sort its issues out over the next few months. It is still much better than here although I do love the animals and game reserves. I also think of you. Michael is doing as well as possible but he has more surgery in his future. I hope everything is okay on your side.
