Welcome to Monday Musings where my muse pinpoints anything exciting or unusual I have read, seen or experienced during the last week it could be anything that piques my interest…
Natural Antibiotics that work…Honey.
The benefits of honey have been known for thousands of years…honey is prevalent in medicine for its antimicrobial and wound-healing properties. Herbalists who prefer natural to pharmaceutical therapies still look to it as one of nature’s best natural antibiotics.
But as is often the case all honey is not equal…to get the best antimicrobial effects of honey, always choose honey that is raw and organic. Manuka is also a good choice…I consider myself very lucky as everyone knows how I love fresh honey from the comb and I get a pretty regular supply…I use it on small wounds hubby is always getting scratches etc when he’s gardening and out comes my honey it keeps the wound moist and acts as a barrier to infection…to keep our immune systems healthy I give hubby a spoonful of honey with cinnamon each morning and I’m sure it is that that keeps him free from colds and sore throats…I prefer mine with apple cider vinegar I just add a little hot water to the apple cider vinegar and stir in a spoonful of honey…
I also use honey in my recipes as a sugar replacement… honey can be replaced in most recipes for baked goods although it can affect the texture it will be moister and denser… are you saving calories ..tsp for tsp sugar and honey are comparable…depending on the bees and the plants honey will vary in its concentration of antioxidants and other health-promoting nutrients…
However honey has a deeper sweetness than table sugar so if you are using less you are likely to consume fewer calories from the sugar…
It was Groundhog Day last Thursday how cute is this…?
I have also been reliably informed that winter may last another 6 weeks …
I’m seeing and hearing lots of recipes for the Super Bowl…12 February when the Philadelphia Eagles V Kansas City Chiefs takes place…I hope all of you NFL fans have a great time and enjoy the game and the food…
Phoenix City officials are asking that you Recycle Right so that the cleanup can become more efficient!
Because invariably there will be waste and a lot of it…
My chosen song this week is from “Sunday in the Park with George”
Not only is Jake Gyllenhaal easy on the eye he loves food…he knows how to spatchcock a bird and make creme brulee…
Talking about food...I know I always do…this man always surprises me with quirky food or with the recipes he makes…I also hate waste…without any more ado, I give you…John Rieber and his “leftover adventure!”
Well done John on using up your leftovers…
Thank you for joining me today as always I look forward to your comments…I hope to see you on Wednesday for my “Green Kitchen “…x
Honey is so good for us. Groundhogs are so cute…except when they love under your porch.

Tasty goodness indeed, and I commiserate as we have squirrels in our rafters they get noisy at times but I do love seeing the little ones as they play on the telephone wires and the mango trees in the early morning then all is forgiven -smile 🙂 x

Glad you support honey! I am reading a few negative comments. Especially when the person sounds so confident. Gosh!? Thank you! 🙂

I think whatever food you can think of someone will have a negative and once it gets on social media well it escalates it’s a minefield out there but yes I do support honey plus it’s a natural product…Thank you for dropping in and leaving a valued comment 🙂

When I get adventurous about food, it tends not to go well.

I always look out for Manuka Honey when it is on offer but we have a very good local raw honey as an alternative. Great stuff. And loved the groundhog video and how wonderful that she gets such a wonderful selection of wild visitors. ♥

Hi Carol, my parents have always used honey in much the same way you do. I have a Victorian gingerbread recipe that uses honey instead of sugar. John is always innovative with food.

I’m always glad to read about the medicinal benefits of food I enjoy, like honey. Unfortunately, most things I like aren’t particularly good for us.

Thats the downside, Pete 🤔 but a little of what you fancy does you good.. I stick to 80/20 that works for me😊.. I hope you have a good productive week 😊

Thank you for sharing my misadventure…I was going to make a bacon-wrapped pie but my oven wouldn’t cooperate so I had to go the “all-in hash” route!

I didn’t know how medicinal honey was until I started writing my prehistoric fic. Now, my characters use it all the time! My sis has bees so sends me a glorious supply of the organic stuff.
I enjoyed the article, Carol.

Thank you, Jacqui.. Like me you are lucky to have your supply of organic nectar and honey has been around as you know since virtually the beginning of time 🤗

My grandmother always started the day with a shot of vinegar and honey, said it would cure whatever ails you!

I often spread honey on toast. I get the honey from my cousin in Essex. She has her own beehives and makes it all herself, so it is definitely organic.
I loved the groundhog video. Wish we had those in England. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete. x
