Monday Musings…20th March 2023…how single-celled yeasts are doing the work of 1,500-pound cows, How to Prevent Food From Spoiling During a Power Outage, Music from Bocelli and Sheeran…

Welcome to Monday Musings where my muse pinpoints anything exciting or unusual I have read, seen or experienced during the last week it could be anything that piques my interest as I explore the rabbit holes…smile.

Being aware of the fact that climate change is real and global warming exists despite the fact earth’s climate has changed throughout history however now we have more man-made factors that will influence those changes including population increases…

Food if nothing changes will not continue to feed the world population…with advances in science, it is inevitable that as much as we would like to grow and see our food harvested there does have to change some change is good, some bad, some gone in a flash and some have been long-lasting…

I came across this post while reading Patty Fletchers Social Media Monday…it is an interesting read and  I am the first one to admit that I love Almond Milk but recognise that the amount of water needed to produce almonds is astronomical and not sustainable if the popularity and demand for almond milk escalates…Cows emit Methane and I am not getting into that argument but given the increasing demands for beef /milk again we have to have alternatives…

How single-celled yeasts are doing the work of 1,500-pound cows …Cowless dairy is here…

Power Outages…

We are far luckier than some and they happen quite infrequently here and never for longer than about an hour not so for some of you..my readers as it seems to be quite a regular occurrence and can last days…what to do as especially now with food shortages and rising prices around the world we cannot afford to waste anything…Well never fear I came across this post on ” How to prevent food from spoiling during a power outage” there are some great practical tips it’s well worth a read if you are blighted by power outages…

Music today is from another one of my favourite tenors  Andrea Bocelli who like many artists duet with other artists whose style is totally different and most times it works…of course, their working relationships must stem from a mutual sense of respect for each other artistically and as people, it’s then that the magic happens…

I loved this I hope you do too…x

Thank you for joining me today for Monday Musings as always I look forward to your comments and appreciate your shares I hope to see you for my A-Z of World Cuisines on Wednesday where I look at the cuisine of Germany in the meantime enjoy your week…x

    Hi, Carol and all.
I’m sorry, I’m so late to the party. It was a busy week.
I appreciate your sharing my post here. I thought many would appreciate it. As for me, I like real milk and cheeses Etc. but at the same time I see the need for more options.
I like the idea of keeping ice or a large cold pack in the freezer at all times. I never thought of it but the odd thing, I have one someone left once and it’s in there, so if my power ever goes out, we’ll see how that works.
I think we all must try and remember how things were done before we had all these conveniences because I fear one day they will be taken from us in some way. As you say, we’re already seeing outages, sometimes for days. What this means is that our systems are weakening and if some EMP doesn’t get us just the overuse will.
OK that’s the end of my rant. You all have a sublime Sunday, take care, be aware, and blessid be.

Hi Patty..Better late than never as the saying goes and it doesn’t hurt to know what our options may be in the future and like you at the moment I prefer the real deal. You are very welcome for the share it was an interesting read…I hope you had a wonderful weekend and have a fabulous week ahead 🙂 x

Thanks for the info on the yeast and dairy and I can see the application in countries where there is no access to it. With regard to methane, I think we should perhaps be addressing the issue of the emissions by the countries who are happily still chucking toxins into the atmosphere from their less than ecofriendly industrial practices. We used to have a big problem with power outages when we first moved to Spain 25 years ago, especially in 90 degree heat in the summer. We kept iceboxes and kept ice packs in the freezer to transfer them and any food into the boxes if the cut laster more than a couple of hours. We learnt not to keep to much frozen food at any one time. ♥

It was an interesting post on single-celled yeasts and worth a share and I am in total agreeance as who should be putting more in the pot depending on the country’s emissions.Like you when you lived in Spain I have a stock of ice boxes in case of need but luckily here we don’t have too many outages Hugs xx

Thank you so much for the link to ‘precision fermentation’! I haven’t been keeping up with the tech lately so I gobbled it up. 🙂 I understand that the ‘taste’ of the proteins depends on how they’re manufactured, and by whom, but…flavour is such a complicated, complex thing. I just can’t see how a yeast can produce a protein that has such complexity. I’m not a big cheese eater, but I think I’ll be sticking to the real thing. 🙂
Power outage: I have an upright freezer and when I know there’s likely to be a power outage, I buy in a bag of ice. I recently put the ice in the bottom of the freezer [that’s the only place with enough room] and crossed my fingers. The ice not only kept everything going during an 8 hour outage, it’s /still there/. It never melted.
Andrea Bocelli: I’ve loved his voice for years but never heard Ed Sheeran. Was truly amazed at how beautifully their two voices combined. 🙂

And yet the Nutritional Yeast that vegans use is supposed to have a cheese like taste…not that I have tried it…I love a good mature cheddar(like) only the Brits can make so would be interested to try anything but I would be a hard one to convince-smile-Well done on finding a solution that works during a power outage. I also have loved Bocelli for years and although have listened to Ed Sheeran I was surprised how well and beautifully the two voices combined…I loved it! 🙂

The Offspring loves cheddar! Me, I’m still very so-so about cheese. I could probably pick a fake Brie from a real one but even that would be pushing it. I guess people who eat those awful cheese slices they put in McDonald’s burgers probably wouldn’t bat an eyelid.
And yes, Bocelli and Sheeran were fabulous. You can post most videos like that one. 😀 😀 😀

I’m with you on those who eat those awful cheese slices and I haven’t tried nutritional yeast to make a comment but I do agree that Bocelli and Sheeran were a delight to listen to 🙂 🙂

Neither am I dear Dolly its info for those who wish to know and I also eat little beef probably in singe figures per year Chicken or Pork are our preferred meat …Pigs emit far less due to the difference in their digestive systems…Bocelli is one of my favourite tenors and I loved this change in his direction..I hope you have a great week dear Dolly 🙂 x

I really enjoyed this, and the chemistry between them was nice to see. I don’t know who the woman in the video was but she clearly felt the beauty of it all too xx

I love your eclectic findings, as usual. We (Earthlings) simply need to stop spending so much power on useless pleasure and instead divert our water and energies to sustainable food. This generation is so accustomed to 24-hour electronics when it used the be that some people didn’t even have A/C or a phone.

Thank you, Chel and I agree everywhere I go and look are people on mobiles I have banned them from my dining table as no one speaks and one smart Alex said well you can’t talk and eat so nannie said no but you can eat your food quicker and while its hot instead of being immersed in your mobile…kids.. that rule applies to adults as well let me tell you-smile-

We had frequent and sometimes lengthy (up to 72 hours) power outages when we lived in Burma. We had two fridges and a chest freezer. We kept one fridge closer for the duration and I wrapped the freezer in blankets after 24 hours for a long outage. We never lost any food.
