The Environmental A-Z…the letter L…

Welcome to my Environmental A-Z…

The idea for this series came about because as my regular followers and commenters know I am passionate about the health of the world I am living in… however often when I am researching and reading articles I come across terms and have to look them up which spawned the idea for this…two-fold… it increases my knowledge and I hope yours…

The A-Z of the environment and Climate Change… letter L.

The best way to predict your future is to create it...Abraham Lincoln.

Landfill…

noun
  • a place to dispose of refuse and other waste material by burying it and covering it over with soil, especially as a method of filling in or extending usable land.”landfill sites”

A landfill site, also known as a tip, dump, rubbish dump, garbage dump, or dumping ground, is a site for the disposal of waste materials. A landfill is the oldest and most common form of waste disposal, although the systematic burial of the waste with daily, intermediate and final covers only began in the 1940s.

The reality is an unsightly, dangerous mountain of waste…Is this your wake up call…?

If you watch this video you will see some good and much that is horrific and mismanaged…We must ALL seriously think about the rubbish we produce as you can now see what it looks like when multiplied…

I don’t think that is me being overzealous it is me being scared of what the future will bring in terms of diseases and disasters if action is not taken by each and every one of us…we have to be acutely aware of our own waste and how our municipality deals with our waste we cannot be complacent…Be the Change.

Landfill Sealing/capping.

Capping involves placing a cover over contaminated material such as landfill waste or contaminated soil. Such covers are called “caps.” Caps do not destroy or remove contaminants. Instead, they isolate them and keep them in place to avoid the spread of contamination.

Would you want to live in the vicinity of a landfill site? Some don’t have the option…The consequences to their health are enormous …People who live close to municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills could be exposed to air pollutants emitted by the plants (landfill gas containing methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and other contaminants including volatile organic compounds, particulate matter and bioaerosols) or to contaminated soil and water.

Water travels you could be closer than you think…

Litter…

Small isn’t it?t that cellophane wrapper from your fag packet or sweets…the chewing gum which you have finished chewing…the lolly stick…crisp packet…the bit of foil from the top of a pack…when waiting outside a shop I have watched people come out of the shop unwrapping as they go and that small piece of whatever just casually dropped…  often it flutters away on the breeze…

I used to make my children go back and pick it up if I saw them doing that and put it in a bin or in the bag I carried for those little bits they soon learnt and it has stayed with them…

For the past 34 years, the No. 1 littered item found during the annual International Coastal Cleanup has been cigarette butts. But the results of the most recent International Coastal Cleanup have finally come in, and for the first time, the No. 1 littered item was something else: plastic food wrappers…my question is just WHY….why do we do it?

Latex...

In recent years, the incidence of occupational asthma in healthcare workers has increased.  One of the leading causes of this increase is worker exposure to latex.

Latex gloves have proved effective in preventing the transmission of many infectious diseases to health care workers. But for some workers, exposure to latex may result in allergic reactions. Reports of such reactions have increased in recent years–especially among health care workers.

Lead…

Lead is a heavy metal used in many materials and products. When absorbed into the body, it is highly toxic to many organs and systems. Lead is a natural element and does not break down in the environment. Once the lead has been dispersed and redeposited in the environment, it will remain to poison generations of children unless it is controlled or removed. Even very limited exposures to lead are hazardous to children.

This again begs the question…WHY?…fOR GOD’ SAKE BABY FOOD IS ONE OF THE EASIEST FOODS TO COOK FROM SCRATCH…you can freeze it…if you don’t have a blender pass it through a sieve…mash it…no excuse …this link and up to date report scares the hell out of me…

Load-on-top (LOT) method…

A process used in ocean-going petroleum tankers to separate and contain most oily residues before ballast waters are discharged to the marine environment.

That’s all for today…See you tomorrow in my kitchen…Have a lovely day xxx
