Waste Not! Want Not! Week 11…

Good Morning and my how the weeks fly…Week 11 and every week I come across new exciting projects and it is lovely it is restoring my faith in human nature so many people really do care about the legacy we leave our children and grandchildren.

Here in Asia, much plastic is used it is a hot topic with many initiatives springing up all over the place…A long, long way to go but the signs are good.

Many people holiday abroad and seek out the beaches… BUT and this is where you can help…Are you mindful of how you dispose of your rubbish?… I have witnessed many tourists just leaving the beach and their rubbish with no thought of the environment or who clears up behind them.

What would you rather see this?

Please if you are on the beach or on a boat dispose of your rubbish correctly.

Would people do it at home? Many do but many don’t!

The tiny little cigarette butt...

A tad larger than life here… I don’t smoke …my hubby does… Trust me he knows my feelings…haha…He used to when he was outside in the garden smoking stub them out in my plant pots! He no longer does that…Just in case you can’t tell this was typed through gritted teeth …The man learnt!

Cigarette butts…

The Ocean Conservancy has sponsored a beach cleanup every year since 1986. For 32 consecutive years, cigarette butts have been the single most collected item on the world’s beaches, with a total of more than 60 million collected over that time. That amounts to about one-third of all collected items and more than plastic wrappers, containers, bottle caps, eating utensils and bottles, combined.

People sometimes dump that trash directly on to beaches but, more often, it washes into the oceans from countless storm drains, streams and rivers around the world. The waste often disintegrates into microplastics easily consumed by wildlife. Researchers have found the detritus ( waste or debris) in some 70 % of seabirds and 30 % of sea turtles.

Those discarded filters usually contain synthetic fibres and hundreds of chemicals used to treat tobacco.

Please if you must smoke dispose of your butts responsibly…Not in the sand or flicked into the sea, not flicked as you walk along the street or out of your car window…Use an ashtray!

Find a bin…Take it home stick in your cigarette packet…Just don’t flick it and forget…Just remember it has also only taken a cigarette butt carelessly flicked to start a fire…

If you thought they were biodegradable think again…

It may look like cotton, but 98 % of cigarette filters are made of plastic fibres (cellulose acetate) that are tightly packed together, which leads to an estimated 1.69 billion pounds of cigarette butts winding up as toxic trash each year.

Are they biodegradable…No! The plastic fibres in cigarettes are non-biodegradable which means they DO NOT break down organically.

They can gradually decompose depending on the environmental conditions like sun and rain but after 2 years research shows only 38% has decomposed…

To us in this modern age, January is the door to the new year. Broken down like that it makes my feelings perfectly normal…Doesn’t it?

Wednesday the middle of the week sometimes it just flies …my week not so much it was visa time and day one …did not go well the young man informed me I did not have enough money to stay…shocked as we always do …I went away and pondered what the ??? we were going to do…It was my son who said, “he has used the US dollar not the British pound.”..I looked at the exchange rates and saw he was correct…So the next day copy of said exchange rate in hand I returned…After some umming and ahhing he decided he would check…3 times he did the calculation as he insisted ” I did not do it wrong” Then with a smile, he informed us ” Today it is ok”

No more Diets…Healthy Eating …

Hello and welcome… How is your healthy eating going are you still feeling enthused after all that Christmas Fare and ready to eat healthily, have more energy and keep the advancing years at bay? Or is that old enemy Will Power creeping into your life… He creeps about silently but deadly… He just loves it when you sneak a piece or two of that cake that is saying ” Eat me”

Did you know that the more you resist the temptation that he starts to disappear…He does like a willow the wisp…

The thing is the more you give in he grows bigger and like the gremlins, he sprouts out lots of little Will Powers they are so small they can sneak in anywhere…

Who remembers rice cakes??

Way back in the late 1980’s to 1990″s when I followed one fad diet after another…When low fat and high carbs were one of the Die(t) trends…Rice Cakes were touted as the thing to eat…Cardboard in taste although low-calorie at 35 calories a cake…Looking back they were nothing more than a mouthful or three which had minimal vitamins and minerals, no fat, no fibre and maybe just maybe a gm of protein…Refined carbs which converted very quickly into sugar, they were sprinkled with salt and generally sprayed with artificial flavourings…Did they take my mind off food…No! They left me feeling sluggish and still craving so I demolished the whole packet…

Please tell me they are not still on sale??

Healthy Snacks:

Greek yoghurt and berries with granola.

Hummus with veggies…Get the recipe here

Dark chocolate with 1 oz of almonds or walnuts.

Guacamole with red peppers

2 hardboiled eggs with some cherry tomatoes

A cup of homemade vegetable soup…When I was cold I used to keep a pot simmering and if I felt a bit peckish then I would just pour my self a mug full and it kept away the hunger pangs.

Salsa with baked tortilla chips or veggies.

To bake your own using corn or flour tortillas, a light brushing of oil or a spritz of cooking spray and a bit of salt, you can bake tortilla chips in your own oven and enjoy them while they are still warm.

Peanut Butter and a banana wrapped in a whole grain wrap.

To make your own Peanut Butter couldn’t be easier…

Rather than buying store-bought peanut butter which is full of nasties, it is easier and it is very quick to make your own.

It is the quickest easiest recipe to make ever, the kids can help blitz it and as well as being tasty it has no nasties.

Let’s Cook!

Take 500 gm raw peanuts. Put in oven on tray and cook on high for 10 mins. Take out of oven and reserve a few (if you like crunchy peanut butter) like me. Put the remainder of nuts in a food processor and blitz at 1 min intervals scrapping down the sides. Do this for 4 mins or until smooth.

Add 1 tsp of salt,1 tbsp oil and remainder of reserved nuts if using.

Blitz again for 1 min and put in a suitable container. Stores in fridge for 3/4 weeks…….IT’S DELISH!

Just a few snack ideas to keep you going… What is your favourite snack ???

We all know that to enable us to get healthy we need to up our exercise…

Exercise…That has always filled me with horror…I have braved the gym in the past but no more…I think that with exercise it needs to be something which you enjoy doing and  I enjoy walking and at my age, I think that is enough I have also and I think it is the time of year…I am a tidy person…A neat freak…I feel the need to clean out drawers and cupboards…So each morning I tackle one or two and it is surprising how all that up and down and cleaning out the cupboards is a good little workout…No cupboards today…It was my bathroom cleaning day my ensuite walls and floors and my grandson’s bathroom…What is so difficult about screwing back toothpaste tops, shower gel and shampoo lids etc …

After cleaning 3 bathrooms and that is no mean feat…I went for my morning walk so I feel quite energised at the moment…

Tomorrow I tackle another cupboard…

Shark!

I am sure we have all seen the films, news and headlines over the years…Shark Attack!

Very scary and at certain times of the year more prevalent:-

Chris Lowe, the director of the Long Beach State University Shark Lab in California, said in a statement that shark attacks on humans were “exceedingly rare considering the number of people who use southern California waters, but people do need to be aware that the fall season is a time when more large juvenile and adult white sharks may be moving along the coast.”

Taken in context though we wouldn’t walk into a Lions Den and there have been cases where even cows have surrounded a person and crushed them to death…Because you had entered their field.

Why have I chosen to blog on The Shark??

A headline on Facebook posted by my granddaughter… Caught my eye so I googled it…

I hadn’t heard of it but as I started reading it I realised!

Shark Fin Soup…

In China, shark fin soup originated during the Ming dynasty around the 14th Century. Initially, it was a rare delicacy only enjoyed by the nobility and aristocracy. Sharks were rare and hard to catch so it was only served on special occasions and to honoured guests. It was considered one of the eight treasured foods of the seas and signified wealth, power, and prestige. However during the Qing Dynasty, in the 18th and 19th centuries, shark fin soup began to be consumed by more people.

SHARK FINNING IS BARBARIC. SHARKS ARE CAUGHT  with long lines, gillnets or spears, landed onto the boat with no water so they start to suffocate. THEIR TAILS AND FINS HACKED OFF WHILE THEY ARE STILL ALIVE AND THEN THEY ARE OFTEN JUST DUMPED BACK (ALIVE) INTO THE SEA… Where they slowly sink to the bottom THEN die of blood loss, starvation or are eaten alive by bottom feeders like crustaceans…Wasteful and Barbaric!

How would any species survive without their arm, legs, wings, fins or tails?

Not only is it cruel but it is having a disastrous effect on the oceans eco-system.

This beautiful creature dates back over 400 million years even outliving the dinosaurs of the 1,000 plus species of sharks and rays many are now in danger of becoming extinct due to overfishing…Yep …That word keeps appearing on my radar…Over Fishing.

Just as overfishing threatens many/most of the fish in our Oceans the shark plays an important role within the eco-system…Classed as one of the top predators they are an essential part in the natural order of marine ecosystems.

Not all species of sharks attack humans and when they do sometimes it is a set of circumstances like a magpie is said to be attracted to bright shiny objects bright colours or blood from an open wound attracts some sharks …

What do sharks feed on most on fish, plankton, molluscs, squid, rays, dolphins, sea lions you may as well say practically everything in the ocean.

You get the Bull shark who will feed on other sharks but in turn, crocodiles have been known to feast on Bull Sharks.

The Tiger Shark, however, eats non-food items and there is certainly much of that to be found in the sea due to dumping and pollution.

How do sharks feed…?

In many different ways just like the sheepdog rounds up the sheep so the long-tailed Thresher Shark rounds up schools of fish. The thick-lipped Nurse shark puckers up and sucks their food out of cracks and crevices.

The Cookie Cutter Shark and no I didn’t name it…Latches onto its prey and sucks out a bite and the little pygmy Shark scurries up and down the sea bed picking up plankton and small fish as it goes.

Sharks are very important to the ecosystem as they are good housekeepers they eat the sick and weak leaving the healthiest of marine species to breed and thrive. Some feed on carcasses of dead creatures lying on the sea bed just like we vacuum or sweep our floors they keep the sea bed clean…

Say NO! To the practice of Shark Finning … Save Our Oceans!
