We wanted to share with you what happens if your body is deprived of individual nutrients over an extended period of time.

I love beans and am trying to cut down and have a couple of meat-free days a week…The health benefits which Sally will outline for you are just amazing…The way to go if you want to get healthier and Sally also has a tip to cut the windy side of bean eating…Enjoy!

Just a word of warning and one I should have given you but omitted to do soMany apologises...The lovely Tabula Rasa reminded me and said…..You might want to put an addition on to remind people that raw beans must be boiled rapidly for ten minutes and must never be cooked in a slow cooker. This is to kill the toxins that are in the beans. You must also not substitute one raw bean for another in recipes unless you know what you are doing, for example using kidney beans or navy beans in a felafel recipe could leave you dangerously ill.

Canned beans are fine to substitute and eat raw as they have already been cooked enough. Using a pressure cooker can also significantly reduce down the time (and fuel) it takes to cook dried beans.

Welcome to the round up of posts on Smorgasbord this week that you might have missed.

It has been a varied week weather wise as we had a false spring for two days and then were plunged back into frosts and rain. I sat out for an hour in the garden those two days and it was wonderful. I was tempted to come out of hibernation but I am now back in the cave waiting for the real deal.

We need good weather for the next phase of the garden renovation at the back of the house which will have the current tarmac extended and the creation of an outside eating area to take advantage of the summer late evenings. With the addition of some benches in various places and some more tubs of flowers the garden will be complete.

Why?

Meat…Depending on what meat you are cooking it could take anything from an hour to three plus hours…

Potatoes…Who doesn’t love a nice golden, crispy potato with a soft fluffy inside?

Vegetables… Most are cooked in a flash…

As we are in the final weeks before Christmas I was hoping I could find some dishes with a festive feel…

K seems to lend itself to much which is Asian unless I revert to the German Language where our C is often replaced with a K…However not in many culinary dishes so I drew a bit of a blank there…

Kippers…I remember that smell very well as a child my dad loved Kippers…So what is a Kipper?

kipper is a whole herring, a small, oily fish, that has been split from tail to head along the dorsal ridge, gutted, salted or pickled, and cold-smoked over smouldering woodchips (typically oak).

In the British Isles and a few North American regions, they are often eaten for breakfast. In Great Britain, kippers, along with other preserved smoked or salted fish such as the bloater were also once commonly enjoyed as a high tea or supper treat, most popularly with inland and urban working-class populations before World War II.

My abiding memory is the bones and you can imagine a fussy child picking all those little bones out…lol
