The Environmental A-Z…the letter H…

Welcome to my Environmental A-Z…still an A-Z but with a difference …

The idea for this series came about because as my regular followers and commenters know I am passionate about the health of the world I am living in… however often when I am researching and reading articles I come across terms and have to look them up which spawned the idea for this…two-fold… it increases my knowledge and I hope yours…

The A-Z of the environment and Climate Change… letter H.

The best way to predict your future is to create it...Abraham Lincoln.

Hazardous Waste:

Hazardous waste is waste that has substantial or potential threats to public health or the environment. Characteristic hazardous wastes are materials that are known or tested to exhibit one or more of the following hazardous traits: Ignitability. Reactivity. Corrosivity, Toxicity.

They are all around us and some come from everyday activities…there are those that may contain toxic substances generated from industrial, hospital, some types of household wastes. These wastes could be corrosive, inflammable, explosive, or react when exposed to other materials.

Let’s not be complacent about this...it matters how we dispose of them and to not comply is both dangerous and stupid.

Let’s start with our homes…Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is any unwanted household product labelled as flammable, toxic, corrosive, or reactive.

The most common products include aerosols, anti-freeze, asbestos, fertilizers, motor oil, paint supplies, photo chemicals, poisons, and solvents.

How many of these do YOU just throw away with your normal waste? If it then goes to landfill it is then leaking into the soil and water…or do you pour them down the drain, burn them, pour them in a ditch, dump them on a vacant lot, or bury them in a field.

These practices are dangerous.

Waste from hazardous products can contaminate lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater (the places below the ground where water accumulates before it goes to a river, stream, or well). Often only a small amount of hazardous materials can cause serious problems. It only takes one gallon of oil to ruin one million gallons of water.

I know manufacturers have been fined for dumping hazardous waste and many still do it...I am not concentrating on them today as we need to look to ourselves…Know what you are disposing of and how…Let’s start at home and protect Mother Earth.

Household Waste…

It is a proven statistic that if everyone disposed of their waste correctly and responsibly it would make a huge difference…So don’t think that just because YOU throw your oil down your sink or drain that it doesn’t matter …IT DOES.

It is quite easy to dispose of household waste correctly it is also quite easy to take steps to not produce so much household waste if we don’t waste it we don’t have to dispose of it…

We do however need to plan…shop and cook clever to avoid waste we then don’t have to dispose of it…Do we?

The first step in the planning is how we shop…I am lucky in that I have fresh markets within walking distance …I also grow a selection of herbs, fruit and veggies…Not all of you are as lucky as I am so you need to plan, plan what you can grow even on a windowsill or pots, use your freezer, buy fruits and vegetables in season then pickle them, make jams and chutneys or freeze them..take advantage of bargains.

Before you go shopping check that fridge and shop that fridge look at what you have and what you can make from it… those leftover bits of vegetables make soup…flat soda ?…make granola, just freeze it and once frozen scrape with a fork…

Cola also is a great meat tenderiser…3 billion pounds of flat soda liquid is poured down the drains each year…what a waste when we can use it with little or no effort on our part…

Use unpaper towels...Up to 4 months of paper towels! Using reusable towels decreases 3,000 tons of paper towel waste a day. Save trees while saving space and money with this eco-friendly sustainable alternative.

I have ordered mine and will let you know how I get on…

Think before you load that dishwasher with dirty pans and plates have you scraped them squeaky clean into your food waste bin? Because most of us wash our excess curry sauce, soup down the drain…it then sticks to wet wipes, nappies and the end product is a fatberg…One and a half million tons of food and drink is chucked down the sinks each year.

Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking)

What is fracking? ….short for hydraulic fracturing, it’s a method that uses high-pressure water and chemical cocktails to break up deep shale formations in order to extract gas …

The dangers of fracking…In addition to water quality issues, fracking wells release compounds into the air, such as benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene and n-hexane; long-term exposure to these has been linked to birth defects, neurological problems, blood disorders and cancer.

Quite frankly from what I have been reading if any fracking was carried out close to where I lived I would move…HOWEVER, a whole town cannot move…if you own your home who is going to buy it?…

It seems to me that profit is overriding any safety and health issues …the effect on drinking water sources…the damage it can and does cause is mind-blowing…

After watching this…I would would say yes…what do you think ?

Although I understand some of the changes HAPPENING AROUND THE WORLD and to an extent know what we can do to slow it down, however, I also know that the earth has gone through changes over the centuries so how much can we manipulate and stop what is happening and how much is just a fact of life ???

That’s all for today…I hope I have explained it in layman terms and made some things clearer as I believe we should all have a clearer picture in our minds as to what we can change and how… also what affects our health and how…

See you in two weeks for the letter I…next Wednesday it will be Part 7 of the new A-Z on food and terms with the middle letter being H as in Anchovy…Doughnuts again but spelt properly…mine’s a jam one, please x

Thank you for reading it is a pleasure to see you here I hope you come again… Love Carol x

The Story Of Plastic …Part 3

The story of Plastic continued…

Plastic was initially a waste product…a word that originally meant ” pliable and easily shaped” in recent years it became a name for a category of materials called polymers. The word polymer means “of many parts,”

Although there are natural polymers made from plants synthetic polymers have been found to be very useful…

cotton-2807360_640

It started in 1869 when an American Inventor namely John Wesley Hyatt saw an opportunity when a New York company made an offer of 10,000 dollars for anyone who could come up with a substitute for ivory.

Hyatt found that if he treated cellulose derived from cotton fibres with camphor a plastic was created which could be moulded into various shapes and made to imitate tortoiseshell, ivory, horn and linen….the plastic revolution took shape…

Manufacturers were now no longer limited by the availability of natural products…

This was just the beginning…

We now come to today where the chemicals needed to make plastic come predominantly from shale products…Collecting shale products causes pollution at the point of extraction…Shale gas manufacturing has devastating effects on communities.

Sunoco Pipeline, Formosa Plastic, Dow Chemical, Exxon Mobile Chemical, Sabic, Chevron, Shell…just typing these names fills me with horror and looking at the names there is a common theme…

Formosa Plastic was found guilty of dumping 50 million gallons a day into estuaries…pellets were everywhere…

This is a common occurrence wherever there are pipelines, factories…waterways are polluted, there are blowouts, lower life expectancies in these areas, a higher incidence of breathing problems, cancers the risks to public health and wildlife are enormous…

Those plastic pellets, micro and nano plastics that are being dumped in our waterways are being increasingly found in our food and water around the world..fish ingest them and bingo ..no you haven’t won the jackpot you are eating or drinking them…

Although researchers are exploring ways to make bioplastics a more viable option the production of them presents sustainability challenges and of course that includes effective biodegradability…

These companies often ride over peoples rights and often you don’t have the rights you think you have as a homeowner. Check it out before it is too late.

There is so much to think about with plastic as in some areas it is a necessity a lifesaver e.g babies incubators and other medical equipment is often made of plastic…However, we need to make our voices heard and be asking the questions as to what is happening with the waste we put out for collection and also we need to make our voices heard and demand that manufacturers do not produce anything which is not biodegradable…

To me, 83 kinds of separation depending on the plastic product means that some products require separating and different machinery is required in order to recycle it… I understand if it is white goods or electrical but packaging…That has to stop I mean when a little single-use sachet is made from at least 5 different components and maybe 7 which means it cannot be recycled as no one has the equipment… it also isn’t worth it…However if you count the human cost of that waste…That isn’t worth it either!

Production of those should be stopped and replaced by a fully biodegradable product … the manufacturers need to be taking some responsibility.

That’s all for today…Be well and stay safe don’t forego those precautions too quickly as many areas are seeing an increase in Covid-19 cases…It ain’t over yet folks…Better to be safe than sorry…xx

About Carol Taylor:

Enjoying life in The Land Of Smiles I am having so much fun researching, finding new, authentic recipes both Thai and International to share with you. New recipes gleaned from those who I have met on my travels or are just passing through and stopped for a while. I hope you enjoy them.

I love shopping at the local markets, finding fresh, natural ingredients, new strange fruits and vegetable ones I have never seen or cooked with. I am generally the only European person and attract much attention and I love to try what I am offered and when I smile and say Aroy or Saab as it is here in the north I am met with much smiling.

Some of my recipes may not be in line with traditional ingredients and methods of cooking but are recipes I know and have become to love and maybe if you dare to try you will too. You will always get more than just a recipe from me as I love to research and find out what other properties the ingredients I use contain to improve our health and wellbeing.

Exciting for me hence the title of my blog, Retired No One Told Me! I am having a wonderful ride and don’t want to get off, so if you wish to follow me on my adventures, then welcome! I hope you enjoy the ride also and if it encourages you to take a step into the unknown or untried, you know you want to…….Then, I will be happy!

Thank you once again for reading this post I hope you all have a fabulous week and stay safe these are troubling times xx

Latest recycling and environment news..26th August

Travel and alternative means of travel was the main topic last week…It was heartening to hear how many of you are looking at alternatives to your car and your mode of travel when you need to use other transport i.e for your holidays…

green foot prints eco system

The transport system where I live is very good ..Thinking about it as the mode of transport for many here is the scooter it makes sense as riding a scooter over long distances is not a safe or viable option so good public transport is…The cost here in comparison to elsewhere is also very cheap…

Also if searching for how to get from A to B all options will be shown i.e, bus, train or plane and details of all three are given so it is easy to plan a trip…

From some of the comments, it is not so elsewhere…Lots of thoughts and plans for the future but not for the here and now…

Electric Cars…They seem to be gaining momentum…Pete Springer has changed to such cars and has given his valuable insight…

Over to Pete… Thank you, Pete…x

I have two vehicles. My primary vehicle is a hybrid, which means it runs partly on gasoline and electricity. It is the first vehicle that I’ve owned that gets better gas mileage in the city than on the highway. I don’t completely understand the technology, but the battery charges through regenerative braking.

I recently purchased a truck because there are too many situations when we need to haul something. The vehicle runs on flex-fuel. That means it can run on gasoline or gasoline-ethanol blends of up to 85% ethanol (E85). Ethanol is becoming easier to find and burns cleaner.

What has come to my attention over this last week…

Two statements on social media…Both designed to catch one’s attention…

  1. Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor BUT because we cannot satisfy the rich…I share and 6 likes…
  2. Imagine if trees gave off WiFi signals; we would plant so many trees we would probably save the planet. Too bad they only produce the oxygen we breathe…1 share and 6 likes…
  3. Jalapeno and cheese spring rolls…31 likes, 7 comments and 6 shares…

If I started typing my thoughts on the above …I probably wouldn’t stop for a while… That scares me…scares the bejesus out of me…

A comment by Janet on last weeks post made me think…Red Herrings and all of that…Then I came across this report… and this one https://www.biogeosciences.net/16/3033/2019/

cow-234835_640

I like cows…I spent most of my childhood on a cow farm…My grandad was farmer ..he taught me how to milk a cow before they got those mechanical milkers …He taught me lots and I have still never eaten veal…Born to die were his words…I am also sure he would have many more words to say if he was still alive…Loved you grandad and miss more xx

The big news this week is how the Amazon is burning…

The news is telling us how fines for environmental crimes are falling…Brazil’s president has been accused of emboldening miners and loggers.

Mr Bolsonaro has scorned environmental activists and declared staunch support for the clearing of areas of the Amazon for agriculture and mining. Experts and campaigners say his administration has given a green light to rainforest destruction.

People have been demonstrating outside Brazillian embassies around the world …Pressure from the UN…and now a u-turn…

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-49452789

The Amazon is called the lungs of the world…Yes, the president has quickly executed a percieved u-turn…How much truth is in what we are hearing..We know that fires happen every year due to the climate…How many are being deliberately started and by whom?

Very worrying…Is it the farmers? The loggers? Or outside forces? Or a combination of all three intent on their own agendas without a thought for the lungs of the world… ???

This week not much has made me happy...just more concerned but I will leave you with this good deed and it seems to me we are getting more reliant on good deeds and actions from individuals and small groups of people who have concerns about our world…

A pub has decided to give away 100 free meals a day to hungry children, in an attempt to help poor families during the summer holidays.

Read more: https://metro.co.uk/2019/08/18/pub-landlord-gives-away-100-free-meals-day-children-facing-holiday-hunger-10591774/?

To hear this gives me hope…I think we all need to feel hope …Don’t you ???
