What is really in your Yoghurt and how healthy is it really?

Reading e-mails and news this morning …I don’t why I was shocked but I was and all the protestations from suppliers and manufacturers didn’t cut it with me…I have heard it so many times before…Parents hoping to aid their children through the pain of teething could be using products that contain “potentially harmful ingredients”, dentists and researchers warn.

A new study of 14 teething gels, including Anbesol, Dentinox, Calgel, Bonjela Junior and Boots own brand, found that two contained sucrose (table sugar), six contained alcohol and six contained an anaesthetic used to numb tissue called lidocaine.

All this just doesn’t stop and it seems that tiny babies are not immune from devious/greedy money-orientated manufacturers…

This made me decide to repost a previous post on yoghurts as many of them are aimed at children and packaged to entice them…

Yoghurt is a universal food and has been around since the Neolithic period or around 5000 BC found in all cultures around the world where animals which produce milk are kept.

Yoghurt at its best and most natural only contains milk, live cultures and bacteria and as part of a balanced diet is excellent for your health.

Yoghurt at its worst contains added sugars, cream, gums, thickeners, starches, artificial colours and flavours.

One of those artificial colours comes from insects and I know that insects are used for colouring or eaten in many cultures and the red colour comes from a cockroach variety called Carmine the colour is also known as cochineal or Natural red…That I can accept as we eat many animals and insects in our diets it is when the waters get muddied by the pesky manufacturers who add to the preparation fish glue and gelatin and who knows what else in their quest for the cheapest production possible and have proved so many times that they don’t have a care about the consumers health???

But as with anything be it plant-based, insect based it may cause reactions in humans and such is the case in this instance  used as a colouring not only in yoghurt but fruit juices, ice cream, confectionery (sweets) and also in cosmetics lipsticks and eyeshadow is Carmine/cochineal has  been known to cause severe allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock in some people.

BOY-EATING-YOGHURT

Kids yoghurt line those supermarket chillers and they act like a magnet with labels which promote the latest kids fad …I.E…Ben 10, Barbie, Frozen, Munch Bunch, YoKids, Frubes, Smarties, too many to mention all designed in bright colours to attract kids…many labelled as deserts rather than yoghurt and that in itself should set those alarm bells ringing… They come in pots, pouches, tubes, little Fromage Frais pots so cute…

Do you know what is in them???

Most are very high in added sugars which all have an effect on the  taste buds and if kids eat so much of this sugar-laden food then real food just doesn’t have that same taste…It ruins the taste buds and of course is a major factor in childhood diseases, obesity and that is as well as probably ruining their teeth.

Manufacturers have proven time and time again that all they care about is profit…They don’t care about the EFFECT on the nations children’s health and would say if challenged that you don’t have to buy them…NO…YOU DON’T!

Packaged breakfasts with muesli or fruit which I used to eat years ago working on the assumption that they were healthy I since found out they are anything but healthy… An average container contains 2.25 servings but the label shows the ingredients and quotes for 100gm but working on the basis that most people would eat the pot and not 100gm again sneaky manufacturers hiding true figures. It doesn’t take much to work out that if 100gm is stated to contain 594 KJ then if you eat the whole pot you are now looking at 1339 kJ plus 42 gm od added sugars…NOT such a healthy breakfast…

It is a sad world when you have to not only read the label but check the weight to get an accurate figure of what you are actually consuming…

I will now look at some individual types of yoghurt…

Coconut yoghurt just screams healthy, doesn’t it? Many contain per 100gm 785 KJ and 11.5 saturated fat and no calcium.

Probiotic yoghurt is marketed as healthy for your gut  They can’t do any harm as part of a balanced diet BUT to really be of benefit to your gut you would have to consume  many pots on a daily basis to benefit and then if you suffered from say IBS it could aggravate your condition so it would be more beneficial to seek advice from a dietician who specialises in gut health.

Again WHEN manufacturers are advertising the benefits of these the yoghurt how many you would have to consume is very conveniently not mentioned  …IS IT?

Greek Yoghurt… Pure proper traditionally made yoghurt.

Greek yoghurt is a delicious thing it is made from sheep or goats milk which is strained to filter out excess liquid …whey…leaving a thicker yoghurt which is tart and higher in protein than other yoghurt.

BUT… Isn’t there always a but? Because there is no definite legal definition of true Greek Yoghurt some companies have found cheaper ways to produce a yoghurt with a similar taste and texture and get away with calling it Greek Style Yoghurt.

Greek Style Yogurt contains milk protein concentrates ( MPC), whey protein concentrates (WPC) as well as fillers like gelatin or modified corn starch. Now many MPC’S come from anywhere in the world the import of them is pretty much unregulated…That always sets of alarm bells for me as so many unregulated or very lax with regulated products and they  have been since proven to be detrimental to our health.

It seems that the US is far more lax and does not and this is my opinion seem to put much store on the nation’s health and well-being in the words of the FDA “found no evidence of any significant hazard to the health of the human population”

The European Food Safety Organisation ( EFSA) on the other hand had concerns about the use of Carmine in foods and set up a committee to evaluate because of the number of recorded  allergic reactions by the usage. The Carmine has now been replaced with a synthesized version made from plant extract using Calcium Oxide. A step in the right direction but I would like to know more about what the synthesized product is made up of…too many times things have been found to  NOT be as they were touted to be…Yes, I know I am suspicious but past performance of committee’s and health organisations does not fill me with trust.

Pot set yoghurt the makers claim it is healthier and more nutritious because they don’t add thickeners or stabilizers but really there is rarely little difference…READ THE LABELS.

Natural or plain yoghurt is simply yoghurt with no sweeteners or flavourings or they should be again READ THE LABEL.

Lactose-free yoghurt… Are made using soy, almond or rice milk and can contain whey (milk proteins) not sugars…

Pouring yoghurt or drinks… Made the same as other fruit yoghurts just less or no thickeners to make them portable. But they are aimed again at kids much of the time and check the label because they may have fewer thickeners but what about the colouring and the sugars???

Your safest options are natural or plain yoghurt, Greek Yoghurt ( not Greek Style) and this is what irks me as tradition Greek yoghurt takes longer to make it is more expensive but although the Greek style yoghurt is cheaper to produce you will notice that they will be higher in cost than normal yoghurt and there will also not be hardly any difference in cost to the traditional Greek yoghurt…

I think we really need to be sending manufacturers a big message by reading labels and I know it is time-consuming but once you find a yoghurt that is healthy and not loaded with added sugar and preservatives then you won’t need to read the label every time you can also check from your comfy chair if you have the make as to what they contain and the longer the list the less inclined I am to buy the product .

Or… You could make own yoghurt get the kids to help choose their favourite fruits and if they help make it they are more inclined to eat it.

Making your own natural yoghurt is quite easy and you can either buy a yoghurt maker or if you have a thermometer, a saucepan and an oven or a thermos flask you are ready to go.

I would suggest making a small amount to start with and then take it from there as with anything some like their yoghurt to be quite tart whereas others prefer a milder taste it is a little bit of trial and error until you find what suits your palate.

Firstly you will need to buy some natural yoghurt to make your starter it must be a plain yoghurt not flavoured and must have live cultures…check the label. Once you have made your first batch of yoghurt you will then have the base for the future it is a little like your sourdough starter or ginger beer you need to have a starter.

The milk that you use to make your yoghurt should either be raw milk or locally produced milk which has been produced using a low pasteurisation process that is not homogenized or uses goats milk. Just double-check that the milk you use is NOT ultra-pasteurized or homogenized you must use whole milk.

The healthier the milk used the healthier your yoghurt will be.

I would recommend starting off with a small batch first. For each 1 pint of milk, you will need 1 tbsp of the natural yoghurt unless you already have a starter and then it is 1 tbsp of your starter.

Ingredients:

1 quart of milk

2 tbsp of yoghurt or starter.

Let’s make some yoghurt!

Heat your milk in a stainless steel pan until it reaches 180 F.

Pour the milk into sterilised jars and cool down to 115 F you could also stand the jars in cold water to reduce the temperature quicker.

Then lightly stir in your natural yoghurt or your starter.

You can now either put your jars in your oven with just the light on which will produce a temperature of around 110 F and leave in the oven for 12-24 hours the longer it is left the tarter the yoghurt will be which is why I suggested making a couple of small batches until you get the flavour correct for you.

AT THIS POINT IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO USE THE OVEN THEN YOU CAN PUT THE MIX INTO A THERMOS FLASK AND LEAVE FOR THE SAME 12-24 HOURS.

Lastly, put the jars into the fridge until the yoghurt is cold and set. Then pour off the whey which has separated or pass the yoghurt through a muslin or cheesecloth to make a thicker yoghurt.

Once this is done then store in the fridge and eat as req and also keep some as a starter for your next batch of yoghurt.

This is where you can now sweeten the yoghurt with some honey or fresh fruit whatever your fancy is or just eat with fresh fruit or muesli. Once you have made your own yoghurt you will not want to buy any from a store it really is very easily made and much healthier and with no fillers or sweeteners.

Eat Smart! Eat Healthy…No to Diets!

 

Good morning from sunny Thailand and I hope you are all well and getting in the Christmas spirit it is such a busy time of year coming up and sometimes we don’t have time to eat or eat on the run…Don’t we???

Today I am going to post some breakfasts which I hope will help sustain you until lunch and which you can prepare really quickly…

Firstly…Porridge…

If you don’t know already I had six children and a dog and a snake and a parrot and a horse…Get the picture….lol

So breakfast time was busy…My slow cooker was a lifesaver during the cold winter months …I put the porridge on at night before I went to bed and come the morning it was ready and waiting…So easy…Hubby was first out of the door having had his bowl of porridge and as the kids appeared they could get theirs as it was always fresh and hot…

You can serve porridge with honey, fruit compote, fresh fruit or even a sprinkling of brown sugar which was an occasional treat for me…

Other toppings:

  • Mango and toasted coconut
  • Bacon and maple syrup
  • Peanut Butter and grapes

I cannot pick a favourite out of these as I love them all…

 

How about some nice wholemeal Toast with peanut butter and sliced banana maybe a sprinkling of cinnamon and /or honey.

Or slice some strawberries..anything goes really or some mashed avocado and a hardboiled egg roughly chopped… Quick, easy and nutritious…

Eggs are always a good way to start your day…

Softly scrambled or poached…they are one of my favourite things. Hubby has bread with his eggs I just eat scrambled eggs on their own sometimes I grill some tomatoes as I really love eggs and tomatoes.

Here is a lovely video on how to poach an egg something that many including me have had problems getting the perfect poached egg… And if everyone wants a poached egg this man shows you how to do six eggs at once…

A yoghurt is a great option if you don’t have time to eat it at home put it in a mason jar with a lid and eat it when you get to work…

 

What I love about these jars is you can take them you and any fruit of your choice you can layer it or just top the yoghurt with it.

Easy to make oats to top your yoghurt or porridge.

Quick crunchy Oats…

  • 1 cup of uncooked oats…
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar…
  • 3 tbsp butter.
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder ( optional)

Let’s Bake!

Mix all 3 ingredients together and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes stirring  I love to add a bit of cinnamon…

Allow to cool and top your porridge or yoghurt.

Healthy Eating? BUT is it???

Healthy eating …I wish it was that simple …Don’t you??

We are continually bombarded by “Healthy Food” ads through the TV and social media. I know when I went shopping with kids in tow or in my lunch hour I didn’t have time to scour the shelves or read the labels and to be honest some of those labels even if you had 20/20 vision you wouldn’t be able to read it…

So…Is it healthy or not?

I hope this helps…

Yoghurt…How many different types of yoghurt and yoghurt drinks are there on sale? Who knows… All packaged to catch your eye or the kids eyes we have Miss Kitty drinks, Barbie yoghurts, Ben 10 Yoghurts, Munch Bunch, you name it and they have that yoghurt…Kids are the manufacturer’s dream and our nightmare…

Most fruit flavoured yoghurts have alarmingly high levels of sugar they are high in calories and fat. A good example of what sounds healthy is the Total fat-free yoghurt and it contains 18.8gm of sugar that is nearly 40% of our daily sugar allowance in one go.

Weight watchers and Shape yoghurts if you want something you can eat on the go hover around the 3.1g of sugar so are better.

UK NHS guidelines:

  • Adults should have no more than 30 gm of free sugars a day, (roughly equivalent to seven sugar cubes).
  • Children aged 7 to 10 should have no more than 24 gm of free sugars a day (six sugar cubes).
  • Children aged 4 to 6 should have no more than 19 gm of free sugars a day (five sugar cubes).
  • There is no guideline limit for children under the age of 4, but it’s recommended they avoid sugar-sweetened drinks and food with sugar added to it.

Myself I use natural yoghurt or Greek Yoghurt I haven’t as yet ventured into making my own …

Natural yoghurt is higher in calcium than Greek yoghurt and cheaper but I also use it when I make an Indian curry and I like it with fresh fruit it has a sharper flavour than the creamy Greek yoghurt but I like the taste. I also use it when a flatbread recipe calls for yoghurt so I find it more versatile than buying fruit flavoured yoghurts.

Greek Yoghurt I love it…It is more filling and higher in protein made from milk from grass-fed cows lovely with fresh fruit or my favourite frozen raspberries… I also use it when I make protein drinks or smoothies also if you use it instead of sour cream when you make dips, tacos or on your jacket potatoes you will save whopping 78 calories and 7 gm of saturated fat per 1/4 of a cup.

Although a big pot is initially higher in cost it is healthier, more versatile which then makes it cost effective as well as being good for you.

The bottom line for you and your families health ditch the fruit flavoured yoghurts.

Sugar-Free Sweets.

Nothing in life is free… It costs us somewhere along the line and in the case of sugar-free sweets, it is our health. What cost do you put on your health?

Although sugar-free sweets contain no carbohydrates they contain sugar alcohols which if eaten in excess can cause stomach discomfort and or diarrhoea.

What are they sweetened with aspartame, saccharin, sucralose or other non- calorific sweeteners.

Aspartame the controversy lumbers on some say it is safe and some say it is not…personally so many things once deemed safe are now proving not to be …I don’t trust a government agency to keep me safe…

Saccharin...Another artificial sweetener and more research and testing have been carried out on both of these over the years. Drug and food agencies swear they are safe however health professional and consumer safety groups do not agree. Scientific studies conducted on animals have found links between both these sweeteners and cancer.

The bottom line for you and your families health ditch the sugar-free sweets.

This brings me on to low-calorie sweeteners or artificial sweeteners it seems everyone wants sweetness but without the calories of sugar. A popular natural low-calorie sweetener is Stevia.

The worry among health professionals is that with using these in excess is that many people will then find foods which are less sweet like fresh fruit and vegetables unpalatable thus healthy, filling and nutritious foods are being replaced with artificially flavoured foods with less nutritional value to health. The sweetness then may cause many to stop thinking of sweetness with a higher calorie intake and veer towards eating a sweeter diet and gain rather than lose weight.

Personally, I think this is a dangerous road to take with our health… Many chronic ailments are preventable… That is it in a nutshell… not everything can be put down to unhealthy diets and added sugars but much can and that is a major worry for future generations.

We are guardians of our children’s health and we have a duty as parents to guide them. Children learn habits and if they see us consuming and letting them consume all of this unhealthy sugar-laden food they will see it as the norm… We need to teach them good eating habits …To teach them to love food, to teach them the joy of watching things grow and then cooking and eating it…We owe them the best start in life we can give them.

Let’s be clear on this all this sugar-laden food and drink has a cost on our purses and our health…

I hope this has helped clear up a few points on what foods to avoid …Do your own research and see what you find out I scared myself and the more I research the more I want to know and also wonder how much I don’t know how much is being kept from us which affects our health.

Papaya and Custard Apple Protein Shake.

Papaya and Custard Apple Protein Shake

For those who exercise quite hard and take or think you should take protein drinks then how about making your own?

I know many people who exercise who take these… So I thought I would do a little research and make my own… Cost wise it is a no-brainer against the cost of some most Protein powders.

The protein shake is 3/4 cup of liquid and 1/3 cup of your main protein…

This is the fourth protein shake I have made and today I have used Papaya and Custard Apple.

Why Custard Apple? Because my kind neighbours bought me some round they have a tree in their garden and as with all fruit it tends to ripen at once.

The Custard Apple.

Also called the Sugar Apple or Cherimoya Fruit it is high in Magnesium and Potassium and is known to be great as an aid for indigestion. Containing natural sugars it makes a great snack and also lovely desserts.

Soft and mealy the fruit is best eaten with a spoon after of course having removed the black seeds. The taste is slightly tangy, sweet with a little of a citrusy taste some say. It is also great for fruit shakes and makes delicious ice cream. Hence today I have used it in my shake …Tomorrow I will be making either a dessert or some ice cream.

Below are what you can use to make your own protein shakes and in all honesty, they taste really nice although having  never, ever used powders and the like I can’t really compare taste except to say I have been told the tastes are not always great and those who know me know I  don’t do manufactured stuff…I prefer to know what is in my food.

Liquids:-

Almond milk, Coconut milk or water or Soya milk… It important to get the right balance not what liquid you choose.

Proteins:-

Greek yoghurt, Silken tofu, nut butter i.e raw cashews ( which) require soaking overnight to soften.

Extra proteins:-

Chia seeds, hemp hearts, ground flax or whole oats.

Just have a play with the above ingredients to find your favourite combo…Mine is Greek Yoghurt and coconut water…Let me know in comments what your favourite is I would love to hear from you.

Papaya and Custard Apple Protein Shake.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups of frozen Papaya
  • 1 Custard Apple ..the flesh.
  • 1-2 tsp fresh ginger grated
  • 1/2 limes…1/4 cup or  60ml
  • A piece of carrot sliced
  • 1/3 cup of greek yoghurt
  • 3/4 cup coconut water
  • 1 tsp chia seeds ( optional)

Blitz everything together, TASTE and add more lime if required or honey if you like a sweeter drink and enjoy!

At the end of this tongue in cheek look at various diets… I will be giving you a recipe for a Protein Drink… Protein drinks in my book…I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole… I am the most unbelieving person on this earth when celebrity’s and manufacturers tell me that their product is the best thing since sliced bread… Yes and look how good sliced bread is for you…NOT!

The first diet gimmick on my list is:-

Cream…No girls, not the cream you put on your strawberries…

NO..you rub it in where you wish to lose weight or fat from, sit back after you have wrapped yourself in plastic wrap and watch it miraculously disappear and at $24.99  an 8 oz pot…HaHa… One says 300 recommendations…pfff the only thing slimming down is your bank balance…sucker!

Seriously with all those repeats, the reality is at least 20  minutes or longer unless of course, you are an excise ninja who can move at the speed of light…

The What!

A pill that you swallow which turns into a balloon which a doctor then inflates in your stomach so you need less food…so if you are such a pig and ignore the full signs it gets squashed and you get the scenario where the said balloon explodes…

Come on have you not heard of Mr and Mrs Will Power who live in moderation avenue???

The saying is we eat with our eyes first… You must have some imagination!!!

No Carbs!... That works… we starve our muscles, lose water and feel crap… When all we have to do is eat Good Carbs…Sweet potatoes and whole grains.

Too good to be true… Cookie Diet and Candy Diet…Whatever next???

I now rest my case…do any of you know any diets that really work where you can eat what you like ..when you like …That is free and all it requires is a little willpower and moderation.

Now for those who exercise quite hard and take or think you should take protein drinks then how about making your own?

I know many people who exercise who take these… So I thought I would do a little research and make my own… Cost-wise it is a no-brainer against the cost of some most Protein powders I made one today and it was nice…It tasted good..my son was my guinea pig/taste tester and has been a protein drink customer in the past and it got the thumbs up from him.

The protein shake is 3/4 cup of liquid and 1/3 cup of your main protein…

Liquids:-

Coconut milk or water or Soya milk… It is important to get the right balance not what liquid you choose.

Proteins:-

Greek yoghurt, Silken tofu, nut butter i.e raw cashews ( which) require soaking overnight to soften.

Extra proteins:-

Chia seeds, hemp hearts, ground flax or whole oats.

Today I made a Raspberry Protein shake and for an extra boost could have used chia seeds.

Raspberry Protein shake.

Raspberry Protein Shake

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup of coconut water
  • 1/3 cup of Greek yoghurt
  • 1/2 cup of frozen raspberries
  • 1/2 medium beetroot(raw) peeled and diced.
  • 1 tbsp honey ( optional)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds ( optional)

Let’s, Blitz!

Measure all the ingredients into your blender and blitz away… The colour was amazing a beautiful colour and it tasted very nice not too sweet and I did add honey.  Having never had a protein drink I do not know what they taste like although I have listened to others who say well they don’t taste great but I drink them anyway…Really!

I like to drink something which tastes pleasant.

Next week I am going to test a Tropical Protein shake and I might give you a typical days menu for me (what ) I eat in a day and still lose or maintain my weight.
