Recycling and Climate Change…27th January 2020…Banana Leaf Technology and Roof Top Gardens…

Hello and welcome to this weeks news and views on Climate Change and recycling…Thank you for all your comments last week they were all valid concerns and I hope I went some way to answering those concerns it was lovely to have that two-way discussion going…Thank also to all of you who shared the post and spread the news and views.

The banana tree…here in Thailand and in my garden Bananas grow in abundance.

Its scientific name is Musa Sapientum which roughly translated  means  Fruit of wise  men

Here it is called Kluay pronounced glue oy.

Seasons vary slightly around the regions and it is a tree-like perennial and officially classed as a herb, the world’s largest herb as it can reach 25 feet in height. The fruit is also classed as a berry. Did you know that?

Here in Thailand leaves are used to serve food on,  wrap food for steaming and cooking or used as containers…like these pictured here …They nestle nicely inside my shopping bag without the need for a plastic bag.

It also only bears fruit one time and then little ones for the next crop grow out from the bottom of the plant a perpetual cycle…Which means rather than just letting the tree go to compost the leaves are utilised…before they are turned into compost…Circular recycling at its best.

A young scientist when he was only 15 years old got to thinking about how he could utilise this natural product…This is the result…

All the things I see locally here using banana leaves are great this is taking it one step further and making it longer lasting …

This gladdens my heart and gives me hope when I see young people experimenting at home in mums or nan’s kitchen and producing a natural recyclable product out of potential waste…Like Orange peel, coffee grounds, watermelon skin or banana peel to name just a few…I am going to source some moulds and get Aston working on some egg cups as they also won’t break when bounced like all my others…

This young student has taken it a step further using industrial juice waste to create this  Bio-Peel,  unveiled by design student Denny Handley who studies at Brunel University, London his idea blends waste orange peels with a mixture of other biodegradable products to create a new packaging material that’s strong, malleable and environmentally friendly.

So much great news…Now, who have I put in my naughty corner this week?

Not really any surprise that it’s a drinks manufacturer…Coca Cola...

Their spokesperson is blaming you…Yep…Blaming the consumer…They say you like bottles and that they should be listening to YOU!

They say they are going to concentrate on recycling…However, we all know that many of the plastics used for bottles are made from the type of plastic which cannot be recycled in many local recycle plants as they need specialist recycling due to the plastic they are made of…

Greenpeace USA…had something to say about that…

In a statement emailed to EcoWatch, Greenpeace USA Plastics Campaigner Kate Melgesexplained exactly what she thought was wrong with Perez’s reasoning:

It is mighty convenient for the world’s worst plastic polluter to insist that people want their single-use plastic around. Coca-Cola continues to show how out of touch it is with the environmental crises communities around the world are facing. The solution is not to simply swap one throwaway material for another or continue to fall back on recycling. The solution is for Coca-Cola and other consumer goods giants to fundamentally rethink how they’re bringing products to people, centering systems of reuse and package-free options. We cannot afford the levels of inaction that Coke has shown thus far. Soon, the company will realize just how sick and tired people are of its plastic addiction.

What can we do? That’s easy isn’t it? We are the consumer ….We have a choice what we buy….We could quite easily just stop purchasing Coca Cola…Will you?

Thank you if you are still here and reading to the end…I look forward to your comments xx

About Carol Taylor: Enjoying life in The Land Of Smiles I am having so much fun researching, finding new, authentic recipes both Thai and International to share with you. New recipes gleaned from those who I have met on my travels or are just passing through and stopped for a while. I hope you enjoy them.

I love shopping at the local markets, finding fresh, natural ingredients, new strange fruits and vegetable ones I have never seen or cooked with. I am generally the only European person and attract much attention and I love to try what I am offered and when I smile and say Aroy or Saab as it is here in the north I am met with much smiling.

Some of my recipes may not be in line with traditional ingredients and methods of cooking but are recipes I know and have become to love and maybe if you dare to try you will too. You will always get more than just a recipe from me as I love to research and find out what other properties the ingredients I use contain to improve our health and wellbeing.

Exciting for me hence the title of my blog, Retired No One Told Me! I am having a wonderful ride and don’t want to get off, so if you wish to follow me on my adventures, then welcome! I hope you enjoy the ride also and if it encourages you to take a step into the unknown or untried, you know you want to…….Then, I will be happy!

Thank you once again for reading this post I hope you all have a great week xx

Waste not Want not…

Waste not Want not

This week I have seen quite a lot in the media and on FB about waste and quite frankly it appalled me…

This was not the plastic waste which is ruining our lovely planet this is good food going to waste when there are people starving in the world…

My friend posted pictures of a local farmer and the amount of fruit and vegetables he wastes as the large supermarkets don’t want it …It is not perfect enough… Here is a short video of a small company imagine that waste multiplied by a larger company.

A question? Are there really people in this world who really care about the size and the shape of their fruit and vegetables to me as long as it is fresh that is all that matters…Maybe in some very posh restaurants where everything has to be perfect and uniform but truly home cooks are you bothered ???

Stores could have the perfect and not so perfect in different aisles…

We need to get over the fact that just because food does not look absolutely perfect that it is unfit to eat...

The best way forward as a consumer is to reduce our waste in our own homes…This link is a six-week challenge called I value Food too good to waste

I have signed up to take up this challenge, will you?

If you dislike food waste and also want to save money and help the worlds starving sign up and share, tell any groups you belong to encourage them to promote it…We all need to do our part as not only is valuable food being wasted the electric and machinery which is being used to produce this food is also adding to the carbon footprint.

There are also many organisations who will take this food and distribute it to the poor and needy…

This food rescue allocator will pinpoint organisations in your area where you help by volunteering or by giving food which you will not use…every country has different schemes so based on where the majority of my readers are from I have found a starting point for you..Google is very good and if you put food waste how can the consumer help you will find many organisations… If you are serious and also as concerned as I am then I am sure you will take the time and do your bit…Every little helps!

EUROPE…https://www.areweeurope.com/food-content/estefanie-guzman-food-waste-across-europe

We also need to shop clever and only buy what we know we are going to use…which is where the six-week challenge will help…

How can you reduce waste in your home?

If you grow your own there is only so much you can pickle or can, freeze and use in your daily cooking.

Makeup goody bags and give to your family, friends and neighbours or your local church… This is something which works very well here as all my neighbours share any excess as we do it seems to be standard practise amongst Thais even the people who live on the streets are catered for we have a man who is quite regular at the beginning of our soi but he always has food I have watched cars top and give food and indeed if I have extra I send the kids down with a bowl…You can buy disposable bowls for pennies.

Make preserves, pickle or can ... I even pickle watermelon rinds and they are very nice I make my own tomato base for chilli and spaghetti bolognese and keep in portions in the freezer…I do not buy cans mainly because of health and leaching but cost wise it is a no-brainer and so quick to do.

Use all the vegetable a good example is broccoli which often comes with a thick stem…I take off the outer part and either use it in soup or sliced as a vegetable it is really nice.

Chicken carcass or meat bones…Don’t throw it away make soup or stock… Some of the best meals are made from leftovers so get creative.

Make compost…Even if you only have a small garden or balcony plants or herbs love a bit of compost.

Leftovers… Something we all have… freeze for another day or pop in the fridge and use another day or if you have an elderly/disabled neighbour take them a bowl I am sure they would appreciate a nice home-cooked stew or soup.

Set up a little table outside your house with any excess fruit or vegetables…Put a sign up saying Free please help yourself but don’t supply bags and then people with only take what they can carry…

Not only are you not wasting food but you will probably make a lonely person very happy…We can learn much from others and we don’t give to receive but you will get a warm feeling in your heart…

We need to bring back that sense of community as in many areas if our lifes it has got lost…We have the power at our fingertips so come on peeps spread the word…

Waste not, Want not!

Lastly don’t stop there…Celia from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial goes even further to reduce waste and save money… She has a brilliant waste reduction plan so check out her blog and see what she does to reduce waste in her home…

What do you do to reduce waste? Please share any hints or tips…Let’s do this together…
