Healthy Eating…Intermittent Fasting…

Good Morning…Today I am going to be talking about intermittent fasting what it means and what you can do when fasting…And how it works for me…

For quite a while now I have been intermittent fasting and didn’t know it… Last week I discussed the Keto diet as my son is following this eating plan… I  listened to him and some things I agree with and Keto does recommend that you do take part in intermittent fasting.

As you know I believe in a healthy balanced eating plan, eating normal food not calorie counting unless you really want to…Healthy eating should be a way of life …There are very few people who can stick to a restricted diet for any length of time…

Unless medically advised our diet should be balanced and not loaded one way or another with certain food groups.

I also know how hard it can be for some who are addicted to sugar either soda drinks or sweet processed foods…I have been there …Sometimes though as Sally explains it is not you who is lacking in willpower but a fungus which is living in your tummy and the sugars which feed it… To read more about the subject pop over to Sally’s it is a very good series and although I don’t have a problem with sugar I have learnt quite a lot about healthy eating…

https://smorgasbordinvitation.wordpress.com/2018/06/05/smorgasbord-health-column-candida-albicans-part-two-sugars-and-yeast-free-bread/

Well… we only have one body and when you look at it we can abuse that bod but if we start treating it properly it responds really well…To me, that is an awesome piece of machinery…Don’t you think…

Fasting has also always conjured up that image of being starved of food or a feeling of calm…I certainly didn’t look upon my eating pattern as fasting or starving myself but I am calm …Most of the time …

Intermittent Fasting.

What is it?  Short term fasts which mean you are consuming fewer calories and that is it!

There are three main categories:-

Some people reduce their calories over a two day period and consume 500-600 calories a day during those two days …The other 5 days they eat normally…which doesn’t mean binging to make up for those two days when your calorific intake was reduced…It ain’t that easy…

Others opt for 24-hour fasts either dinner to dinner the next day or breakfast to breakfast the next day just 24 hours straight… This they do once or twice a week and eat normally on the other days…

Me…I follow the third option...I don’t eat after 7 or 8pm at night and don’t eat before 10-11 the next day…It is called the 16/8 method…For me this is easy…What I hear you say what’s easy about that???

I dropped quite easily into this eating pattern when I moved here one because of the heat and two I can’t eat 3 meals a day it is too much for me…Now that could be an age thing or the fact my tummy has shrunk…

I will be honest I have cut out certain eating habits for example when little Lily visits it is a treat for her to go to 7/11 after she has eaten her dinner and she has always bought Nannie 2 bags of jelly teddy bears which of course I ate…It would have been rude not to…haha

Sunny evenings also are conducive to a sundowner or three they creep up on you, don’t they?

Numero three was when hubby brought me my morning cuppa he also added two digestives to the plate…Sally’s little chart soon put paid to that habit…Do you know how many calories and lbs 2 digestive biscuits(graham crackers) a day add up to over a year…I do now…That habit was kicked into touch…Those biscuits were the first to go…

The jellies were next to go as because Lily brought Nannie Jelly’s when she was here so did grandad when he went to 7/11…It has now been at least 4 months since a bag of jelly teddies has passed my lips…

The last habit to get kicked into touch was my sundowners…28 days without a drop and that included 2 nights out and a weekend visit from my son…So I feel I have a right to be chuffed with myself…

Why am I telling you this?

To show you that

1. It can be done.

2. It has been done over a period of time and not all at once…

My belly fat is still reducing and I have lost a few pounds and inches…

Do I count calories no and I enjoy my two meals …Lovely curries or stir-fries, maybe a cheese platter with some fruit…I eat what I fancy and I will be having a pancake tonight as it is Shrove Tuesday …

I snack on fruit as it is so plentiful here or enjoy a fruit smoothie…Which is why I will not be following the Keto eating plan as it restricts fruit and certain vegetables and although I have been told there are good fats…Please, how many avocados can one eat in a day…You do invariably then eat the bad fats, the processed fats and that much fat is not good for your long term health…

How do I get through my 16 plus hours without eating???

lady sleeping

I will break it down for you…

From 8 pm until whenever I sleep which could be 10pm it could be 2am…During that time I am writing, watching a movie or reading…I also have a pot of green tea…Yes, that is allowed on Intermittent fasting…

You can drink water, coffee, tea or other non-alcoholic drink any beverage which is under 50 calories..a splash of milk is fine in your tea or coffee.

I then sleep ..very well I will add especially since I cut out the sundowners out until my alarm goes off at 6 am…

I then get Aston up… my grandson as he leaves for school just after 7 am…I get his breakfast, iron his school shirt then when I have seen Aston of to school I have my pot of green tea while I check my e-mails and answer any comments on my blog.

I also start writing as I am doing now @ 9.47 am…10 am I feed my sourdough and today I am having Grapow Moo with an egg which I will cook once I have fed my sourdough…It will then be 10.30 ish maybe 11 am…Am I starving…No!

This routine works for me…

I will then go for a walk as hubby wants some grass seed and hang the washing out…

When I come back I will have a glass of coconut water and probably an apple, some Marian fruit and tamarind with maybe a little piece of the lovely blue cheese I bought on Saturday. I have found someone who imports cheese at a very good price…yummy 🙂

During the afternoon I will have another pot of green tea and then probably a Thai green Curry tonight.

Then it is evening, Green tea and bed at some point…As you all know if we get engrossed in our writing/reading the time just flies by.

I really don’t see this 16/8 as fasting as some is sleeping and being busy… I walk every day, some days I am trying out new recipes and of course, I am reading and writing…I honestly am busy most of the time and sometimes I have to remind myself to eat…My bad 😦

Whichever one of the fasts you choose to follow you can drink which I didn’t know until I did my research I thought fasting meant no food or drink…Especially if you follow these short fasts.

Common Sense should have told me that we need to keep our bodies hydrated…There are so many lovely teas we can drink to help us stay hydrated while we fast.

The benefits to our body are many by following intermittent fasting…

Belly fat will reduce, you will lose weight and inches.

It increases fat burning

Increased energy

It lowers your blood  insulin and sugar levels

Helps your memory…

I feel so much better my energy levels have increased and just overall I feel better. Fasting is not starving yourself it is just choosing when you eat.

For me, this is the way forward and I have lost quite a lot over the last 7 years BUT those little treats I mentioned started to notice on the belly etc… Which why I cut them out gradually I have also cut refined carbs and changed to brown /wild rice which will increase my fibre intake…But I actually prefer the taste of brown/wild rice, especially as now I know how to cook it properly…

This has kick started my inch loss and I do feel better for it…

I hope that you now find intermittent fasting a bit clearer…Thank you for reading any questions please ask I love to hear from you and always reply to my comments xxxx

About Carol Taylor:

Enjoying life in The Land Of Smiles I am having so much fun researching, finding new, authentic recipes both Thai and International to share with you. New recipes gleaned from those who I have met on my travels or are just passing through and stopped for a while. I hope you enjoy them.

I love shopping at the local markets, finding fresh, natural ingredients, new strange fruits and vegetable ones I have never seen or cooked with. I am generally the only European person and attract much attention and I love to try what I am offered and when I smile and say Aroy or Saab as it is here in the north I am met with much smiling.

Some of my recipes may not be in line with traditional ingredients and methods of cooking but are recipes I know and have become to love and maybe if you dare to try you will too. You will always get more than just a recipe from me as I love to research and find out what other properties the ingredients I use contain to improve our health and wellbeing.

The environment is also something I am passionate about and there will be more on this on my blog this year

Exciting for me hence the title of my blog, Retired No One Told Me! I am having a wonderful ride and don’t want to get off, so if you wish to follow me on my adventures, then welcome! I hope you enjoy the ride also and if it encourages you to take a step into the unknown or untried, you know you want to…….Then, I will be happy!

Healthy Eating…How to shift those Christmas Kilos…

Well, January is nearly over and I think by now most of you will have finished those boxes and tins of chocolates or maybe you have been really good and given them away??

Who am I kidding?? Who does that???

Who’s waistband is feeling a little snug?

So now you have enjoyed that awesome Christmas dinner …Just to recap what was your favourite part…I just love bread sauce and stuffing with cranberry sauce and the Christmas pudding and cream…After eight mints you know the ones with the little hard pieces of crunch in them? Or the peppermint creams…

But I have now finished the red cabbage we have had a little portion with our meals since Christmas…

But it is now time to get real once again…Christmas just knocked me off my little healthy eating path..a few potholes…

car on road potholesWe can do it can’t we???

Normally I am fine…I walk every day or 6 out of 7 days… Eat generally what I like 80% of the time and occasionally my 20% kicks in when I fancy something a bit naughty but nice…Who doesn’t???

I also only eat between certain hours normally 8am to 8pm…That way my body has a good fast…

My weight has dropped 4 stone since  I have been living here and my tummy is quite flat…There is not so much temptation here as the food is entirely different and the diets… Lots of fresh produce and eaten raw as well most of the time…so I guess not so much temptation and now I don’t crave sweet things like I did…I can make that box/ packet of goodies last a week or more..happy with 1 piece of chocolate a day instead of the whole box…

But to be fair, I shop at local markets and they don’t sell crisps and goodies like chocolate bars so it is easier for me.

Do I love food?… Of course, I do… But I love my health and wellness better…

Do I love spending hours in the kitchen?? In this heat, you must be kidding!

So as I need…No want to kick those few extra kilos into touch I have gone back to watching what I eat just a little closer as generally, I am ok… I have also been researching and trying new recipes which are healthier and tasty and will make your taste buds sing..

I also have the added incentive as my big boy is coming for a short visit in Feb so I want to just drop a few pounds…

So Tuesdays are still going to be my healthier eating day when I will bring you some tasty food and of course some chatter those of you who know me … Just know I love a chat! So talk to me, tell me what you want, where you need help and if I can I will…

girl with a question

Just know I am not quiet, shy and retiring…I love to chat and I love finding out about the food I eat and it is harder for me than most of you…I don’t have fancy cooking pots and pans here…I am lucky I have a kitchen most Thai houses don’t!

Just a two ring burner and a BBQ ..most of the time outside and not even a kitchen sink… I am luckier than most here…I have a sink…lol… and a ceramic hob… the oven has now arrived but is basic, no numbers on the thermostat just a dial so I have a little oven thermostat so I can get the right temperature although it will be bottled gas as there is no mains gas here…It is a tad more difficult to regulate but I am getting there.

But if you have visited Thailand then you probably have seen the marvellous tasty amazing food which is produced by the side of the road, on a street market stall …Who needs a state of the art kitchen??? Look at that beautiful squid!

SAM_7514I will bring you tasty healthy recipes which take longer to cut your veggies than cook..most of the time…I can hear your thoughts…I bet I can’t get the ingredients…Yes, you can…Well, not all of the time…But most of the time you can and if not I will suggest a substitute…

It won’t all be delicious Thai food, it may be European, Indian I have some wicked recipes given to me by my Indian friends…It won’t come from a packet it will be cooked from scratch…For those of you who can’t cook or don’t cook it will be easy… I don’t do complicated very often and I don’t do many cakes and puddings…But I will for those of you who like them..only sometimes…haha… as a treat… I can be mean…Who needs a pudding when you have just eaten the most delicious lunch or dinner???

Ok, Ok…I know sometimes you do…

I can do snacks like lovely fresh salsa…and yes Doritos or crackers…You have your 20% … Don’t you???

Use it wisely…

I want you to love your food and lose weight…But we all know that it is not always easy for some and some go into it half-heartedly but I want to live as long as I can…by watching what I eat…I am not fanatical…I eat proper food… I just like to know what is in my food… I don’t do gyms for exercise I walk..but if a gym is what you like and enjoy then go for it…That is half the battle won…

If we love our chosen exercise and food we do it and eat it!  stay healthy and lose weight… No fads..No get slim quick..no fancy foods…No going without…Think moderation… No right way or wrong way ..Just your way! It has worked for me but I am a single-minded cussed old cow sometimes who loves a bit of Christmas pudding and cream…I don’t follow a rigid diet or exercise plan… I enjoy my life and want it to continue as disease free for as long as I can…

It works for me…Will it work you?? Only you can answer that…

Moderation is all I ask and honesty… be honest…So don’t feel guilty about what you eat..Enjoy it! Love it!….We are all grown ups and we know what is good for us and what is not…

If that television advert, or magazine spread or that famous celebrity or doctor is telling you about something marvellous…They are laughing all the way to the bank…If it sounds too good to be true…It is!

Well, that’s my not so little spiel over…Will you join me on a  Tuesday ???

For delicious healthy recipes???

I hope you do xxx

Eat Smart, Eat Healthily…No to Diets!

Healthy Foods

Goodmorning I see those little Christmas imps are sneaking up on us…Where does the time go? Now you just know it is going to fly by…Don’t You??

Today I am going to talk about eating habits… What works for you when you are trying to eat healthily and maybe cut down on some things???

I am not an advocate for diets which cut out whole food groups..unless of course, it is for a medically diagnosed condition as we should be eating a balanced diet with a touch of moderation thrown in…Faddy diets rarely work in the long term and I am watching with interest WW new ideas on eating…

Myself I follow the intermittent fasting way of eating...Quite by chance, I will add… It is quite hot here most of the time and once I get in front of my laptop and start writing before I know it it is nearly lunch time and most days all I have had is a cup of tea which hubby makes and my glass of ACV, honey and ginger or maybe a fresh coconut water…

Which is how this intermittent fasting started…I then either make a smoothie or cook a Thai stir-fry.

Spoiler Alert!

The recipes for some which I have written for my Wednesday post over at Sally’s aka Smorgasbord Magazine…Which is to be published tomorrow…

Then it is either back to my keyboard or shopping…If shopping I stop and have an Orange and carrot smoothie..which is my current favourite smoothie …

Then it is time to get the evening meal and sundowner when we sit outside and have a sundowner and talk about our day… I may then have a small snack of some homemade salsa which is awesome…I love it and so does Aston…

My quick salsa recipe…

  • 3 medium to large fresh tomatoes, skinned and chopped or this week I bought some beautiful cherry toms from the farmers market so I used them.
  • 1/2 red pepper de-seeded and chopped very finely..
  • 2/3 shallots finely chopped
  • Juice of  1/2- 1 lime
  • 1 small red chilli (optional) chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped cilantro leaves.
  • Salt and pepper to taste.

I just blitz mine quickly in the food processor to make it fine and it just mixes the flavours a little better I think but hand chopping is also fine whatever suits you.

Then it’s dinner and whatever I am cooking maybe a curry or another stir-fry or a salad.

It is then back to the laptop and a glass or two of water and sleep…

I don’t eat after my evening meal…

Therefore the other day when I was reading an interesting post about intermittent fasting The penny dropped and I  realised yes that’s what I do but also I discovered how our body reacts to food at different times of the day… It all fell into place… A really interesting post …

https://weightmanagementfor.life/intermittent-+fasting/

My post yesterday was about processed foods and what they were and the fact that not all processed foods are unhealthy …Processed foods are any food which has untaken a process to either make it palatable or extend the life i.e Freezing, canning, baking.

The link is here in case you missed it and also there is a link to an app which allows you to scan the barcode of an item and it will display the amount of sugar, salt or fat in that item it will also offer better alternatives so a really useful app to have on your phone I mean who has tried to read a food label…

https://blondieaka.com/2018/11/05/what-is-the-definition-of-processed-food/

Although I am sitting here in the warm  the mornings and nights are a bit colder and I need a shawl for my shoulders I know many of you are experiencing very cold weather, in that case, my advice and what I used to do was keep a pot of soup on the stove and if I came in from the cold or had a break from writing there was always a nice warming cup or bowl of goodness I could have and it staved off those hunger pains.

soup on the hob or fire

Some soup recipes for you…

I hope you are enjoying these healthy eating posts and please if you have any hints and tips then I will post them and link back to you…xxx
