Recycling and environmental news 4th Nov 2019…Homemade Advent Calendar

Once again a very warm welcome to this week’s recycling and environmental news where I post about the good, the bad and the ugly…I would also like to extend my thanks to all of you who support and comment on these posts. I know how passionate many of you are about not only the environment but recycling, our food chain, and manufacture…

I try to keep these posts as upbeat as I can as no one wants to read doom and gloom all the time, HOWEVER…I do think we all need to be aware of what goes on around us we cannot continue to bury our heads and live in our own little bubbles while child labour deforestation, climate change, chemicals in our food chain, animal testing, fracking, starvation, food waste etc etc merrily goes on…

I highlighted last week how the chocolate industry despite good intentions are fighting an uphill battle…

Corruption is ‘pervasive’

The giant chocolate companies are not solely to blame for not stopping deforestation. Environmentalists accuse governments, too.

This post highlights just what is happening and also how Mars is trying to combat and improve the chocolate industry…

Corruption is “pervasive,” according to the financial auditing firm KPMG, which told investors that Ivory Coast ranks 108th out of 176 countries. The distribution system for cocoa, too, “is often erratic and is subject to corruption and capricious political interference,” according to a 2017 World Bank report.

There will soon if not already be lots of chocolate for sale...Many offers..Buy 1 get one free but please think of how it was produced and despite efforts by the chocolate industry child labour is still used in the production of most chocolate whatever the claims …

 

Single-use plastic bags and packaging…

Thailand has a big plastic problem but I see signs from major companies of change…Many places now use brown paper bags and I was pleasantly surprised when buying books and pencils for the start of the new school term that when I arrived at the till I was told “sorry madam” no bags…I asked was that just for today and she answered: “no madam forever” …That statement was met with a big smile from me…

Tesco is a huge retail group and have stores everywhere around the UK and have many stores here in Thailand under the brand of Tesco lotus…Tesco in the UK is going forward in the battle against packaging and waste which I am pleased to see…

They are starting with moves to cut out plastic from their own brand products…

SC Johnson…are a leading manufacturer of household cleaning brands…I was interested to read how they are tackling plastic waste as their products produce much of it…I am also eagerly awaiting the arrival of the promised collection centres some of which are to be here in Thailand.

SC Johnson and Plastic Bank already have nine collection centres in Indonesia. Under the new three-year agreement, they will expand to 509 total collection centres and points across several countries including Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam – four of the five countries that contribute most to ocean plastic – and Brazil.

It seems that recycling is known as a typically feminine occupation and the reason why many men just don’t …Not seen as a masculine thing to do…Not so Steve Tanham...he makes eco-bricks from waste plastic packing etc …

Steve said…It takes a bit of effort but recycles both the plastic milk bottle and the ‘thin plastic’ contents at one go. If you ram the contents (handle of a long wooden spoon) into a compressed state the resulting bottle – which can take weeks to fill – can be used as an insulating brick in construction projects. A lady in South America came up with the project for rural local housing.

Christmas…How many of you make your own Christmas decorations and ornaments…? One of my blog readers makes her own advent calendar she has crotchet one for herself and is now doing another for her brother what a great idea…I am looking forward to the photos. Janet also shared some tips…Thank you…We’re saving toilet rolls for Xmas crackers and my daughter says we can buy stuff from charity shops to put inside. One can knit or crochet any shape so woolly crackers?! I crocheted an Advent calendar last year and I’m making another one this year for little brother. I cut up old Xmas cards to make little pictures to pull out of the pockets then my daughter had the idea to write each day’s activity on the back….cool ideas thank you for sharing, Janet 🙂 

You have inspired me ...I am saving toilet rolls and have found this idea for anyone who can’t knit or crotchet…

I think this is a great idea however I noticed that the paper she used was probably not recyclable anything that is shiny… you cannot recycle you can reuse…

Latest recycling and environmental news…16th September 2019…

Welcome to this weeks environmental and recycling news as always I share both the good and the bad with you and hope that as you also do your own research that you form your own balanced opinion on how things are going…Can we believe all the headlines? I think from past experience the answer to that is no…

I don’t smoke and abhor the smell of it…I have also written about cigarette butts b4….For something so small and I have seen people just flick them away…They create a pretty big mountain of trash and do untold damage…

Cigarette butts have long been the single most collected item on the world’s beaches, with a total of more than 60 million collected over 32 years.

It’s no wonder that cigarette butts have drawn attention. The vast majority of the 5.6 trillion cigarettes manufactured worldwide each year come with filters made of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic that can take a decade or more to decompose. As many as two-thirds of those filters are dumped irresponsibly each year, according to Novotny, who founded the Cigarette Butt Pollution Project.

Switching to a plant-based diet can help fight climate change, UN experts have said.

A major report on land use and climate change says the West’s high consumption of meat and dairy produce is fuelling global warming.

But scientists and officials stopped short of explicitly calling on everyone to become vegan or vegetarian.

They said that more people could be fed using less land if individuals cut down on eating meat.

What are your thoughts on this? Over the last few decades, we have been told to cut the salt, cut the sugar, eat low-fat foods…

Now it appears that low fat means higher sugars…So we are now being told fat in moderation is ok…

Now my understanding of what a scientist does is…That they have a theory…They test that theory…That testing could take 5 years, 10 years 20 years…If then that theory is proven ….That’s good…If that theory is not proven to be correct the scientist then comes up with another theory to test so the process begins again…

Eating low fat and ditching fat was a theory…Now proven to be untrue…Back to the drawing board…BUT manufacturers and governments implemented that unproven theory …THE RESULT ….More health issues which meant more government money being spent on treatments…

Now we are being told …Follow plant-based diets…But is this another theory.?.. Is this now being tested?

My thoughts…Yes, we should eat more vegetables and less red meat…BUT…I advocate a healthy balanced diet based on the health of my parents, my self, my children over the last few decades…As good as any scientific trial…The proof of the pudding as the saying goes…

I am happy to do what I can to help climate change...HOWEVER…There seems to be a lot of theories floating around and if we don’t have good health it doesn’t matter that the world won’t exist as some theories are touting…We won’t know a dam thing about it!

Read the report a few times and then tell me what you think based on what you think are theories( which) are not facts and proven facts…

Who wants to ditch the cling film, pack a lunch and find a suitable way to ditch the plastic baggies for something sustainable well this link doesn’t have all the answers but has a good few…

Who hasn’t been to a Tupperware party? Who still uses Tupperware…I mean don’t ditch it keep using it …Tupperware has been around for over 70 years and most people recognise the name….Well, Tupperware is changing … “Tupperware Brands is committed to meeting the needs of today’s consumers, who are increasingly asking for solutions that mitigate waste and advance a more circular economy. I really do dislike hearing about food waste especially when I hear about children and people starving around the world…In this so-called enlightened period of time we shouldn’t be hearing about children going to school without breakfast…we shouldn’t be hearing about children starving in school holidays…

Governments around the world should be ensuring that everyone should have the basic in life and food and water count amongst that…There are many schools who feed children and wash their clothes…Something is wrong, very wrong…Children should not be relying on charity for food and clothes…I have seen comments from people like me and you who are saying that parents should be feeding and clothing their children that there should be no need for charity…Those people obviously do not struggle financially…Pull up the ladder, Jack I am alright….as the saying goes…Me….I sincerely hope you get yours in spades…Whoever you are…

I don’t need to go into the why’s and the wherefores as to why people are starving…The reasons are many…

The Magic Breakfast is a charity whose mission is to ensure that children, who might otherwise not have the best start to their mornings, get a nourishing, healthy and filling breakfast before they start their school day.

Working with ‘partner schools’, the charity provides over 40,000 children with a ‘magic’ breakfast, but with an estimated 1.8 million school-age children in the UK at risk of hunger in the morning, there’s much still to do.

That’s all for today I know I have left you on a sobering note…But please look at your food waste and carbon footprint and if you have any food leftovers think of your neighbour …they may be elderly or have young children…They may be in need of a meal or a bag of fruit if your bush or tree has yielded too much for you…We all need to be paying it forward…

The latest news on recycling and the environment…

This week I have brought you a mixture of good news as it really isn’t ALL doom and gloom…There are lots of great schemes, new ideas and enthusiasm around the world to make it a better place for us and the wildlife…But of course, I will have a naughty corner…

This is an adorable video…What these school children are doing is so cool and it teaches them circular recycling at the same time…

Last week I wrote about Meth – Gators and how when drugs are flushed into the water system it is causing mutations in the animal population…This seems to be a problem worldwide I hold my hand up I have in the past flushed things down the loo which now I know I really shouldn’t have…I think we ALL need to be more aware of what dangers our age-old habits are actually causing…Take  Metronidazole which is an antibiotic commonly prescribed to treat infections such as pelvic inflammation or other vaginal diseases. It can cause side effects that include seizures, numbness, and diarrhoea, and should not be used while pregnant or during breastfeeding. It’s perfectly safe—provided it’s taken as prescribed. If you have tablets or medicine over take them to a pharmacy do not flush them…

 A combination of wastewater treatment leaks, human and animal waste and runoff from drug manufacturers has led to one river in Bangladesh showing concentrations of metronidazole 300 times greater than the “safe” level…This is what happens…

It seems our habit of flushing things down the loo..needs to stop…It would be a start as it has been proven time and time again that small actions multiplied can and do MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Now it is time for this an idea whose benefits are twofold it looks so pretty and is also a haven and food source for insects and bees…

I am in favour that big companies and manufacturers should be doing more for the environment I am however not naive…I did after Nestle’s disgraceful actions and comments that” water was not a human right” banned all Nestle products from our house. This most recent of actions I am sure will benefit Nestle by increasing sales but if it does what they claim then it will also benefit the environment…I probably still wouldn’t buy them ( I do) hold grudges…haha…But do think that many consumers will especially given the benefits to the environment.

Nestle has launched a new recyclable wrapper for a snack bar that it claims will degrade in a marine environment within six months.

The YES! range will also be used on a high-speed packaging line in a “world-first” technological breakthrough.

Last year, the brand pledged to make all of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025.

The new wrapper has just been rolled out on the YES! fruit and nut-based bars from July and will carry the message “carefully wrapped in paper”.

Food Waste…I find it appalling when there are so many people in the world starving and not just in third world countries…I know this image is out of date but the message is clear if you are interested or have spare food contact your local government to see if they have any incentives coming up…

Much of the waste takes place on the consumer end of things, thanks in part to poor marketing, incorrect storage, confusing expiry dates, and bad shopping habits. Another issue is overflowing store shelves and displays, which shoppers in high-income countries have come to view as common practice, despite the fact that not everything displayed gets sold.

Thanks to smartphone technology, there are some ways in which this food waste is being reduced. A few apps have been developed that connect shoppers to businesses with surplus food that are willing to sell it at a discount in order to avoid throwing it out.

Plastic Part 12…Recycling…

It has been one of those weeks when everywhere I turn I see plastic on the news, documentary’s, coming out of overflowing bins it just seems to be shouting at me this week…Haha can’t get me I am still here… there were the workmen in Serbia who were taking the plastic which was causing a blockage in the river from one side of the bridge and just dumping it on the opposite side…Now I don’t know if that is the current practice there or if they were just being thoughtless and lazy either way I was just gobsmacked…

What plans do Serbia’s government have? Serbia’s government plans to join the EU’s single-use plastic products ban, environment minister Goran Trivan said.

“By the end of this year( 2019), we will adopt very decisive measures in this direction,” Trivan said in a video file posted on the website of news agency Tanjug…

A smart approach is needed towards the disposable plastic products ban as many economic interests will be concerned, Trivan said.

Let’s hope some urgency creeps in, shall we?

Janet from the blog Tidalscribe told me about Boots the Chemist and how they are now wrapping the prescriptions in plastic wrap and have done away with the paper bags, of course, the locals are understandably upset about this and have signed a petition.

When I dug a little deeper it seems that last August, Boots signed up to the UK Plastics Pact, a voluntary pledge by the retail industry to cut single-use plastic packaging. Wrap, the body that leads the campaign, said on Friday it was “engaging with Boots on this and other topics in relation to their contribution”. Apparently, there are many disgruntled customers I hope they walk and find somewhere else to get their prescriptions and anything else they need to buy …Although if people are ill or infirm that is not always possible is it? The government should make these pacts arbitrary and not voluntary…

Boots should be ashamed of themselves however it does seem that many companies both home and abroad sign these voluntary agreements and then do what the hell they like…

Governments need to grow a pair and set out their stall once and for all, stop voluntary agreements and make them obligatory.

Industry Announcements:

The Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and Break Free From Plastic urged Southeast Asian governments to strictly enforce waste import bans.
Worn Again Technologies, a U.K. company commercializing a chemical recycling process for recovering polyester and cellulose from textiles, announced that the following companies have joined its Pioneer Members’ program: ASICS Europe, Dhana, Dibella, Directex, H&M, Himes, Kering and Sympatex.

 

Many Asian countries who were taking in waste from other countries have now banned this practice which I think is good every country should be responsible for its own waste not be shipping it out and the money saved from the shipping costs could be put towards their own recycling costs…

Malaysia has kicked back...and is sending contaminated waste back to the countries of origin…

It seems that Uk supermarkets led by Sainsbury’s are leading the way…Sainsbury’s

has become the first UK supermarket to remove the plastic from its loose fruit, vegetables and bakery items.

By September, paper bags will be available to customers for loose bakery items. Customers buying loose fruit and vegetables will either be able to bring their own bags or buy a reusable bag made from recycled materials.

I think that is really great news and hope that other supermarkets quickly follow… So if you are a Sainsbury’s shopper then you need to get behind your store, get your bags ready and support them through any teething problems…as I remember customers complaining when McDonald’s changed their straws.

If we seriously want to eliminate plastic waste as much as we can then we need to be proactive and support any incentives and projects it may not be easy to start with but hey life isn’t easy and we need to rid the world of all this plastic…

Hopefully, this little video will help you to know what symbol to look for and what is done with this plastic when it is correctly recycled.

The sheer volume of plastic waste is now coming to light and scientists have found 414 million pieces of plastic waste on Australia’s Cocos Islands which has made scientists reassess the amount of plastic pollution that may already be in the world.

Much of this was found below ground which gives scientists grounds to think the scale of plastic may be incorrect and be far more…

Now for the good news as there are many projects underway or already in practice to address this…ProAmPac has announced four new sustainable product groups…

Of course, it means that to start with we as consumers may need to do our research for companies whose packaging is compostable and recyclable with our yard waste or food and doesn’t need specialist recycling. But…we want to do our bit as well, don’t we?…

Shampoo…Of course, we can make our own using recycled containers and bottles but with our busy lives and resources, we don’t always have the time or the inclination…

It does seem that many of the sporting giants are getting behind the plastic problem and yes it will create more publicity for them but I don’t care if it lessens the amount of plastic in our oceans which killing the marine life then so be it…

Unilever North America…Accelerates their action on their plastic packaging target…

Another sporting giant…Adidas has unlocked a circular future with a running shoe made to be remade…

I think a circular economy is a way forward and many companies are signing with Loop who are rethinking recycling. Producing great looking containers which they will refill.

Going on holiday? Many countries now are banning plastic at the point of entry…The Airport…It is also said that Africa is leading the world in plastic bag bans.

Countries, states, large cities and small towns all around the world have banned disposable plastic shopping bags to protect the environment. In Canada, the town of Leaf Rapids, Manitoba banned plastic bags in 2007. Other North American cities include San Francisco (also 2007), Seattle, Los Angeles, Portland and Mexico City. The states of Hawaii and North Carolina have banned plastic bags, and states in Australia and India have done the same. Countries that have banned disposable plastic bags include Italy, China, Bangladesh, many countries in Africa including Rwanda, Kenya, the Congo, and South Africa and the list is growing…all positive…

Just one more thing I have been reading quite a lot on the whales which are washing up dead on various beaches around the world and it seems that as whales hoover up as they go around they are ingesting microplastic which is either in the water or the fish they are eating so just to recap please think about what you are buying as regards Cosmetics as much of this ends up in the waterways and eventually the sea…

I am generally the only European person and attract much attention and I love to try what I am offered and when I smile and say Aroy or Saab as it is here in the north I am met with much smiling.

Some of my recipes may not be in line with traditional ingredients and methods of cooking but are recipes I know and have become to love and maybe if you dare to try you will too. You will always get more than just a recipe from me as I love to research and find out what other properties the ingredients I use contain to improve our health and wellbeing.

The environment is also something I am passionate about and there will be more on this on my blog this year

Exciting for me hence the title of my blog, Retired No One Told Me! I am having a wonderful ride and don’t want to get off, so if you wish to follow me on my adventures, then welcome!
