Latest recycling and environmental news…16th September 2019…

Welcome to this weeks environmental and recycling news as always I share both the good and the bad with you and hope that as you also do your own research that you form your own balanced opinion on how things are going…Can we believe all the headlines? I think from past experience the answer to that is no…

I don’t smoke and abhor the smell of it…I have also written about cigarette butts b4….For something so small and I have seen people just flick them away…They create a pretty big mountain of trash and do untold damage…

Cigarette butts have long been the single most collected item on the world’s beaches, with a total of more than 60 million collected over 32 years.

It’s no wonder that cigarette butts have drawn attention. The vast majority of the 5.6 trillion cigarettes manufactured worldwide each year come with filters made of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic that can take a decade or more to decompose. As many as two-thirds of those filters are dumped irresponsibly each year, according to Novotny, who founded the Cigarette Butt Pollution Project.

Switching to a plant-based diet can help fight climate change, UN experts have said.

A major report on land use and climate change says the West’s high consumption of meat and dairy produce is fuelling global warming.

But scientists and officials stopped short of explicitly calling on everyone to become vegan or vegetarian.

They said that more people could be fed using less land if individuals cut down on eating meat.

What are your thoughts on this? Over the last few decades, we have been told to cut the salt, cut the sugar, eat low-fat foods…

Now it appears that low fat means higher sugars…So we are now being told fat in moderation is ok…

Now my understanding of what a scientist does is…That they have a theory…They test that theory…That testing could take 5 years, 10 years 20 years…If then that theory is proven ….That’s good…If that theory is not proven to be correct the scientist then comes up with another theory to test so the process begins again…

Eating low fat and ditching fat was a theory…Now proven to be untrue…Back to the drawing board…BUT manufacturers and governments implemented that unproven theory …THE RESULT ….More health issues which meant more government money being spent on treatments…

Now we are being told …Follow plant-based diets…But is this another theory.?.. Is this now being tested?

My thoughts…Yes, we should eat more vegetables and less red meat…BUT…I advocate a healthy balanced diet based on the health of my parents, my self, my children over the last few decades…As good as any scientific trial…The proof of the pudding as the saying goes…

I am happy to do what I can to help climate change...HOWEVER…There seems to be a lot of theories floating around and if we don’t have good health it doesn’t matter that the world won’t exist as some theories are touting…We won’t know a dam thing about it!

Read the report a few times and then tell me what you think based on what you think are theories( which) are not facts and proven facts…

Waste I am all for reducing…How to cut down and survive in the kitchen without disposables …Click the link it has some very good ideas which are tested…Beeswax wraps are they the forward….? There really are lots of good ideas ..something for everyone…

Beeswax Wraps

Who wants to ditch the cling film, pack a lunch and find a suitable way to ditch the plastic baggies for something sustainable well this link doesn’t have all the answers but has a good few…

Who hasn’t been to a Tupperware party? Who still uses Tupperware…I mean don’t ditch it keep using it …Tupperware has been around for over 70 years and most people recognise the name….Well, Tupperware is changing … “Tupperware Brands is committed to meeting the needs of today’s consumers, who are increasingly asking for solutions that mitigate waste and advance a more circular economy. The introduction of this new material, and the products in which they will be used, reflect our continued dedication to further reduce our environmental footprint at all levels of the product lifecycle – from design, production and distribution to products’ use and reusability – and also reflects our heritage of innovation and sustainable design,” said Bill Wright, Tupperware Brands’ Executive Vice President, Product Innovation & Supply Chain.

I really do dislike hearing about food waste especially when I hear about children and people starving around the world…In this so-called enlightened period of time we shouldn’t be hearing about children going to school without breakfast…we shouldn’t be hearing about children starving in school holidays…

Governments around the world should be ensuring that everyone should have the basic in life and food and water count amongst that…There are many schools who feed children and wash their clothes…Something is wrong, very wrong…Children should not be relying on charity for food and clothes…I have seen comments from people like me and you who are saying that parents should be feeding and clothing their children that there should be no need for charity…Those people obviously do not struggle financially…Pull up the ladder, Jack I am alright….as the saying goes…Me….I sincerely hope you get yours in spades…Whoever you are…

I don’t need to go into the why’s and the wherefores as to why people are starving…The reasons are many…

The Magic Breakfast is a charity whose mission is to ensure that children, who might otherwise not have the best start to their mornings, get a nourishing, healthy and filling breakfast before they start their school day.

Working with ‘partner schools’, the charity provides over 40,000 children with a ‘magic’ breakfast, but with an estimated 1.8 million school-age children in the UK at risk of hunger in the morning, there’s much still to do.

That’s all for today I know I have left you on a sobering note…But please look at your food waste and carbon footprint and if you have any food leftovers think of your neighbour …they may be elderly or have young children…They may be in need of a meal or a bag of fruit if your bush or tree has yielded too much for you…We all need to be paying it forward…

Thank you for reading and if you have any news and views on zero waste or the enviroment please share…xxx

Waste Not! Want Not!… Recycling…The lies!

When I first started to write these posts I enjoyed it…I enjoy research finding out what is going on and all the wonderful innovative ways that many people are discovering, inventing to Save our lovely world…Because it is a beautiful World…

Also, man and their habits have an impact a huge impact…Our oceans in particular…But also peoples health from these dump sites and landfills…

I know I am not the only one who recycles and does what they can to help with the plastic situation which I think is equally as important as Climate Change.

Firstly during the last week, I read an article which stated that Malaysia was going to return waste to the countries of origin … Oh!

I then watched a programme on UK television Hugh and Anita…Where they have picked a street and are examing their waste to see firstly how much waste each household has and two how they can reduce their waste…This led down many paths and one such path was Hugh followed waste to Malaysia…The waste that was dumped…Just dumped not recycled is horrendous…I watched children bleeding from their noses…Yep, the waste is sometimes just burned where it is…No thought as to who is breathing in the toxic fumes or the fact that those same fumes are going into the atmosphere…I am sure if you know me you can imagine what I was saying to the TV screen…

Hugh collected plastic waste with company names on and took back to the UK…He went and showed Michael Gove one of the candidates for the role of Prime Minister for the UK…he looked delighted to see it…(sarcasm)

Australia… Yep, the Australian government is no better…

I have singled out the Uk and Australia…I could have written a post a mile long as they are not the only ones there is Canada and the US…But it is the same story…Echoed around the world…What our governments are doing with our carefully recycled waste…

We are all being duped into recycling like good citizens and what are our governments doing with that waste…NOT what we think they are doing and certainly not being responsible…

I think it is time we spoke up either in person or write a letter or email…I will most certainly be doing that…

I also think that all that money being spent on shipping and containers would be well spent on recycling in the home countries. Because I am sure that over a period of time those costs are substantial.

The Good News...

The Australian Conservation Foundation has succeeded in its appeal against the government’s assessment of Adani’s north Galilee water scheme, with the federal government admitting it failed to properly consider public responses to the proposal and even lost some submissions.

Let’s hope there will be good news on the recycling front around the world and if you get the opportunity to watch Hugh and Anita I downloaded it from utorrent…But if you can access the BBC  iplayer you could watch it that way it has some great tips on recycling…

Next week there will be lots of good news stories…Thank you for reading and I hope every chance you get you will spread the word on the real truth about recycling…Thank you xx

Thank you once again for reading this post I hope you all are having a great week and a creative one xx

CarolCooks2…Weekly Roundup…Recipes, Your Brain, Climate Change and Healthy Eating…

Welcome to this weeks roundup of my posts, as usual, I have a collection of posts a bit like pick and mix something for everyone a potpourri of food and ideas…And of course opinions…haha

great reads a weekly roundup lady with electronic reader

If your week has been busy and you haven’t had the time to read grab a drink and settle down in your favourite chair and a snack if you so like…But just relax and peruse this week’s posts if you have a comment then please share. I love your comments as do my followers and if it is different from my opinion that is fine it is good to have a healthy discussion…Enjoy!

First up is Sall’s post from Smorgasbord magazine…This post is a rerun of her previous top to toe health posts…Sally is a well-trained nutritionist and she knows her stuff…If you know me then you know that I advocate the fact that we only have one body and we need to take care of it but we also need the one brain we have to be fully functioning and this is where Sally comes in her posts are factual, easy to understand (which) I love I am not technical just tell me how it is…simples…Sally does just that..No frills and fancy words just facts…

https://smorgasbordinvitation.wordpress.com/2019/05/30/smorgasbord-health-column-top-to-toe-the-brain-how-the-brain-develops-from-conception-through-life-by-sally-cronin/

It is now over to me and my question this week was are we doing enough? Many of us are but when I see things like I saw this morning it made me wonder…What does anyone have to say or do to make some people just wake up…So the answer to my question is No! Not all of us…

https://carolcooks2.com/2019/06/03/plastic-part-11-are-we-really-doing-enough/

Follow that!

I did and claimed full bragging rights…Still a way to go but I have reached my first milestone…It has taken a while but I have arrived and I need a new wardrobe so am busy recycling and taking in seams so much better than letting the seams out or just putting it to the back of the wardrobe …

Then it was time for Sally who will go through your archives as well if you like …This is the last of my archived posts shared by Sally and it was a rant…I feel so much better afterwards it certainly relieves the stress…

This last week has also seen the marking of D-Day and when I see the magnificence of the pomp and ceremony I feel nostalgic…It was a time to put thoughts and differences aside and recognise our friends and allies the Americans and their President as they have been our staunchest defenders in our time of need…

The post I chose to reblog was written by a lady whom I first met at my very first writer’s retreat where we shared our written words and our hopes… we met again the following year…Terry Anne has travelled much during her life and was there when the tragic events of Tiananmen Square played out…Terry Anne and her now husband were lucky to escape the tragedy it must have been horrendous…Her post is written with great feeling that only someone who has witnessed the horrors could do.

Waste Not! Want Not!

Where I normally tell you about innovative ideas from around the world and there are many great ideas…I did express my disquiet about using eucalyptus for bedding as I was worried that maybe the Koala would be affected as they only eat eucalyptus leaves…

koala-74908_640

Are they just not so very cute…However, Suzanne from Being in Nature very kindly put my mind at rest she said…

Regarding koalas and eucalypts – they only eat the leaves of one type – the manna gum. In some parts of the country, they are in trouble and in other parts they are doing just fine. It’s very odd and the reasons for this are complex. My daughter met a woman who is worried about the nutritional value of the eucalyptus leaves in the trees growing on a local mountain. She says the trees aren’t as nutrient-rich as they once were and the koalas are suffering because of that. I hadn’t heard of this before. It sounds weird but maybe it’s true.

The eucalyptus trees used for making bedding are probably a different type -there are hundreds, possibly thousands of different kinds of eucalypts over here in Oz. No danger of them going extinct though maybe they aren’t as healthy as trees in the past. The eco-system is such a delicately balanced place. It seems like it’s out of wack in all kinds of subtle ways we are only just learning about.

Thank you, Suzanne, very informative and why I love to read such comments as between us we can get the bigger picture and learn more…

Friday...and then we have the weekend …Has anyone got anything planned? It is only one week to go and my son will be back from England the kids are so excited and counting the days as am I…I can have a break from cooking dinners and just experiment…This week it was Shepherd’s pie and the differences between that and Cottage Pie, Orange Pork with Watercress Rice and one of my favourites yellowtail fish…Enjoy!

Lastly,…it was a reblog of one of my posts on traditions I have discovered on my travels around Northern Thailand and where I get my beautiful salt from…

Plastic…The latest News…Part 2 around the world…

The Blue Planet Uk...How amazing is that? The BBC most certainly know how to make programmes like this… If you haven’t watched then #recommended#

Blue Planet

I can’t wait although I am scared, to say the least, what Sir David Attenborough has to say on climate change…

I thought today I would have a roam around the world to see what initiatives are going on although I do believe that however many initiatives are going on we need to be looking at the source i.e…My pesky manufacturers, they need to be pulled up sharp and told to sort it and pronto or face the consequences so we need to look at who we are electing and how they are going to tackle that…Rant nearly over…haha…

Become a climate voter...I am sure if you google it you will find a party in your area …

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warns the world is running out of time to contain climate change.

I do believe that the amount of plastic generated affects the climate quite simply they are interlinked…

Plastic has invaded our everyday lives and is in everything we buy and use in one form or another…

Each year this figure increase and it is said that in 10 years time production and consumption with double it currently stands at 8 million metric tons finds its way into our oceans.

Worldwide it is estimated that 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute the beaches…

Plastic bags, disposable napkins, plastic straws, plastic takeaway cups, glitter I could go on how could we not notice how could we not realise…did we not see the warning or more to the point heed them…I will be honest here I have read and seen lots over the years and still I didn’t heed the signs…I suppose I was guilty of thinking or not thinking and thought the problem was being addressed…By someone else…

Complacency is the word …

Let’s have a look at how many good serious and inventive ideas are being implemented around the world to make good use of plastic or eliminate the need for plastic and find other ways of producing what we need…

Thailand…

An obvious choice as I live here …Thailand is looking to ban the use of very thin single-use plastic bags in 2022, followed by single-use plastic glasses and straws three years …Thailand is also to ban foreign plastic waste from 2021. Thailand and other southern Asian countries are buckling under the sheer weight of imported plastic waste.

The UK...

In January 2018, the UK announced a 25-year plan to set the global gold standard on eliminating plastic waste, according to environment minister Michael Gove.

Australia …

Unlike other governments I couldn’t find much on outright bans it seems to be that it is happening state by state…South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory, have state-wide bans on single-use plastic bags, and Queensland is set to follow in July 2018. Ministers also endorsed a target of 100 per cent of Australian packaging being recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2025, to be delivered by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation.

Canada…

In January 2018, Canada put a stop to plastic microbeads. Although microbeads were permitted to be manufactured and imported for non-prescription drugs and certain natural health products until July 1 2018.

New Zealand…

Associate Minister for the Environment Eugenie Sage has confirmed that single-use plastic shopping bags will be phased out in New Zealand with regulations to come into force from 1 July 2019.

Germany…

Germany’s minister for agriculture, food and consumer protection. Klöckner wants to halve the amount of food thrown away in the country by 2030. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Cabinet adopted a concept to reach this goal on Wednesday. It is not only aimed at end consumers — i.e. customers in supermarkets — but also at companies, organizations, politicians and scientists. Klöckner made it clear that reducing waste is an “economic, ecological and ethical obligation” for everyone.

France…

2016 saw France become the first country to announce a total ban on plastic cups, plates, and cutlery, to be brought in from 2020.

India…

India pledges to beat plastic pollution by 2022…Wow, that is fighting talk as they probably have more plastic waste than many countries worldwide. India was the host to World Environment Day 2018 and they have taken 5 steps to fast track it already…

Holland…

With effect from January 2016, free plastic bags were banned… Although alongside France they have agreed to a Plastic Pact this is being condemned by the break free from plastics movement and Hollands recycling Network as they feel it should be law and not voluntary…

The Phillipines…

The 3rd major pollution contributor to plastic in the oceans…It seems that plastics, consumer makers are making the pledges…

Spain…

In October, Spain became the 32nd country to sign up to the UN Clean Seas campaign, which aims to ‘turn the tide on plastic.’

South Africa…

The government wants to ban... A lot of wants but no clear policies…

Finland…

Collective working in Finland received a Plastics Roadmap, which is the first step toward a new, sustainable plastic economy. Of the more than 100 proposals made, the roadmap presents a set of key actions to find solutions to challenges caused by plastics.

Rwanda…

Pleasing to see that here the call to end plastic waste has been escalating and even becoming a priority during the recent Annual World Economic Forum where consumer products companies were pressurised to put up more stringent strategies to curb plastic waste.

Switzerland…

Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, 24 January 2019 – Governments and companies are working actively around the world to create a circular economy for plastics.

The USA…

This article published in Jan 2019 show s current legislation by state…Plastic bag and paper bags…

My conclusion…

The countries I have chosen to highlight are based on my readership on my blog…There seems to be a trend for this circular economy for plastics which I highlighted in week 15 in my Thursdays  Waste Not! Want Not! post and it seems a very positive action. Many countries are focusing on single-use plastics which is a start and Thailand is banning imports of plastic waste which is a fantastic move as I believe as a country we should all be responsible for our own plastic waste.

Some are taking a bit of a back seat I believe and although the UK’S 25-year plan is admirable I hope it has a big effect on the environment sooner rather than later…I like to see wording like banned from now or a year in advance…We don’t have 25 years to address this problem…

The EU’s Clean Seas campaign has a good sign up rate however I know that some countries who signed up and agreed to the EU’s fishing quota charter are blatantly ignoring them so I do hope they enforce this much better.

As well as government pledges there are also many local pledges which are great to see but ultimately it is the source of the problem which needs addressing not recycling and cleanups they just keep it from escalating as fast.

But please also remember that textiles also cause environmental problems those glittery tops and dresses when washed all go into the water system and those clothes you recycle often go to landfill and because they are sewed with plastic threads etc they don’t decompose very quickly…Thinking about tossing old clothing in the bin? Don’t. Not even if it’s shredded, stained or no longer on trend. You know those old nylon tights you used to gym in back in the day? Chucking them in the bin for being smelly and stretched out of recognition involves taking 30 to 40 years to decompose.

green foot prints eco systemThank you for reading and please continue to send me your local initiatives for my Thursday’s posts with pictures if possible xxx

That’s all for this week, thank you for reading and have a lovely week xx
