Recycling and Climate Change…2nd March 2020…Good news all round…

Hello and welcome to this weeks edition of the latest news on Climate Change and recycling…Thank you so much to everyone who reblogged and commented last week…Your comments are valuable to me and even when I am feeling a little up they brighten my day…It is lovely to see how many of you are doing what you can to recycle, buy local, grow your own very heartening…

My post on making charcoal last week also received many comments and it made me think especially when I read about friends who are having regular outages where they live it made me thing=k that many people would really be at a loss if they didn’t have electric and that maybe we should be thinking of alternatives …Just in case…

Once again Tori has provided me with a bit of news on circular recycling…Thank you, Tori...

Mexican engineers have created a bio-material, vegan leather made from mango waste for use in the shoes and textile industries.

The eco-friendly textile, manufactured by the Guanajuato-based Polybion company, is sourced from organic waste, like mango seeds and fruit skins.

I would…However, I do think many of these cost an arm and a leg and many people who are on a limited budget cannot afford them.

Lent…  It has already started 26th February until 9th April so you could still participate…How about giving up plastic instead of chocolate…

This is no longer a problem we can shut our eyes to (and we should have cared about those affected in other areas way sooner). It’s not just the fact that plastic doesn’t biodegrade; plastic pieces attract cancer, hormone-disrupting, diabetes-causing chemicals the longer they stay in the sea. And that plastic then enters the fish we eat, the water we drink and the salt we use. The bioaccumulation of plastic – the fact that it’s getting into our food chain – should freak us out…

Free Electricity…Is this possible? Historically, hydropower has been created by damming rivers and installing turbines inside the dams, which can be damaging to fish and the river itself.

Yes, it is...if you live in Portland, Oregon, your lights are now powered in part by the water flowing through your pipes.

The city recently installed new municipal water pipes equipped with four 42-inch turbines that create electricity from the water passing through them.

Tap-water hydropower creates virtually no effect on wildlife, as it is simply harnessing the energy of water that’s already flowing through the pipes.

“It’s pretty rare to find a new source of energy where there’s no environmental impact,” says Gregg Semler, CEO of Lucid Energy, the Portland-based startup that designed the new system.

“But this is inside a pipe, so no fish or endangered species are impacted. That’s what’s exciting.”

Another bonus about hydro-power is, unlike wind and solar, it’s always working as long as the water is flowing.

The turbines can only be installed in places where municipal water pipes flow downhill, as using electricity to pump water through them would defeat the purpose.

How exciting is that?

Candles...Pass It On candles – which are made from100% soy wax and free of any dyes, parabens, paraffin or phthalates – pay tribute to iconic travel destinations that are endangered due to climate change.

They include The Amazon which features a goj berry and Tarocco blood orange scent; The Alps with its wildflower scent of freesia and English pear; The Great Barrier Reef featuring wood sage and sea salt; and The Taj Mahal with its white tea and ginger fragrance.

Some great scented candles and for one who knows that candles can be toxic, they can be made of paraffin—a petroleum byproduct—which releases carcinogenic soot when burned. It is lovely to see a candle which is 100% good for the climate…

Naughty Corner…

No surprises here once again it seems like Coc Cola, Pepsi and some of the world’s biggest food, beverage and product manufacturers are being sued by the Bay Area Group who are fed up with plastic pollution poisoning everything.

Good News!

Equinor has abandoned its plans to drill in the Great Australian Bight for commercial reasons…Norwegian company Equinor has become the third major fossil fuel producer to abandon plans to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight. Drilling has been fiercely opposed by environmental groups who warned about a catastrophic spill.

The downside of this news is that the Federal Government is disappointed but supportive of future drilling.

Has anyone given much thought to what they want to happen when they die…For a long time, I have wanted to go up in a firework I need to check just how climate-friendly they are…I am a believer however that we need to plant more trees…This seems a perfect way…Save trees as many coffins are made of wood and increase the trees planted ..Win , win it seems…

Trees …I t is lovely to hear that Madagascar is planting 60 million trees…Wow, that is amazing why 60 million how was that figure arrived at?

The island nation celebrates 60 years of independence this year, and the start of the planting campaign on Jan. 19 marked one year since the inauguration of President Andry Rajoelina, who has promised to restore Madagascar’s lost forests.

“The government has the challenge of making Madagascar a green island again.

Months of planning and a massive nationwide effort to amass seeds and populate nurseries culminated in the highly publicized launch. It saw participation from NGOs, schools, government ministries, and the army. Rajoelina, dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, launched the planting season by tucking a seedling into a pocket of earth. He later lent a hand to children, took selfies with babies, and was even photographed, hoe in hand, hauling dirt. But experts say the real heavy lifting to reclaim forests will come after the saplings are in the ground.

“Right now, we are at the stage of planting trees, but the big question is: What is next? How to protect those young trees, so we don’t plant them in January and then destroy them in July,” said Jonah Ratsimbazafy, a prominent Malagasy primatologist who heads the Groupe d’Étude et de Recherche sur les Primates (GERP).

This is not the first time this has been on the cards let’s hope that this time it will come to fruition…

Containers…something most of us have and which most of us have more lids than containers…How does that happen? Anyway, I was pleased to hear that M & S are to expand their successful trial of filling your own container. It is something which other retailers like Waitrose already run and Asda has plans to open it’s first sustainability store soon.

It seems like filling your own container is becoming very popular with consumers…

Lots of food for thought today…Thoughts on how we can make a difference while in the main sustaining our current lifestyle with a few adaptions for the good of the planet.

Just imagine if we all thought of just one idea which appeals to us…Think of all those bottles we are saving from going to landfill or into the sea…..With so many ideas and enthusiasm around the world to make a difference, we will save the world.

Thank you if you are still here and reading to the end…I look forward to your comments xx

About Carol Taylor: Enjoying life in The Land Of Smiles I am having so much fun researching, finding new, authentic recipes both Thai and International to share with you. New recipes gleaned from those who I have met on my travels or are just passing through and stopped for a while. I hope you enjoy them.

I love shopping at the local markets, finding fresh, natural ingredients, new strange fruits and vegetable ones I have never seen or cooked with. I am generally the only European person and attract much attention and I love to try what I am offered and when I smile and say Aroy or Saab as it is here in the north I am met with much smiling.

Some of my recipes may not be in line with traditional ingredients and methods of cooking but are recipes I know and have become to love and maybe if you dare to try you will too. You will always get more than just a recipe from me as I love to research and find out what other properties the ingredients I use contain to improve our health and wellbeing.

Exciting for me hence the title of my blog, Retired No One Told Me! I am having a wonderful ride and don’t want to get off, so if you wish to follow me on my adventures, then welcome! I hope you enjoy the ride also and if it encourages you to take a step into the unknown or untried, you know you want to…….Then, I will be happy!

Thank you once again for reading this post I hope you all have a great week xx

Recycling and environmental news 21st Oct 2019…

Welcome to this weeks recycling and environmental news where I post about the good, the bad and the ugly…

This is so cool…some may say it might be a new whimsical destination for skiing, thanks to Copenhagen’s new power plant.

After 8 years of planning and building what maybe the first greenest power plant in the world opened its gates to the first paying skiers..

This is so cool and inspiring for the future …I love it!

I hope you watch and listen to this as it shows that something can be done without demonstrations and the upheaval of peoples everyday travel and life …For me if the people backing organisations like extinction rebellion backed projects like this…The sky is the limit…we can have clean power plants….

I can’t top that this week but as individuals we can make our own mark…We can make changes in our own homes and gardens…If we all made just one change just think what an impact that would have ….

Christmas Crackers…

christmas-cracker-3012548_640

On the face of it they are pretty and some are absolutely fabulous …

But what are we left with?

After we have pulled the cracker, read the silly joke and put on the paper hat while wearing a silly grin…

Did you know?

154,000,000 pieces of plastic crap will end up in landfill or our oceans from the UK alone…

What can you do…You just know I will have found a solution …Don’t you?

Have you any ideas for the Christmas table that can be made at home?

Sewer Gas Destructor Lamps… A reminder that gas build up has always been a problem…

London has one lamp left and the city of Sheffield has a few lamps still functioning…

If you want to know a little more about these sewer destructor lamps then click here

The iCat-90 is a 300-foot catamaran. Oceans United plans to begin trial runs in March 2020, and the first iCat-90 Skimmer is scheduled to leave port on April 22, 2020.

Oceans United plans to grow the fleet to five ships by 2024.

Their aim?…Plastic to fuel…

It is encouraging to see and read just how much is being done…

To give you a start here are 5 easy ways to start making your home plastic free…

  • Avoid plastic water bottles. There are 4,000 plastic bottles used every second. …
  • Bring a reusable grocery bag. …
  • Skip the plastic straws. …
  • Pack a litter-free lunch. …
  • Host an Eco-friendly birthday party.

How easy is that

That is all from me for this week I look forward to your comments…How are you helping the environment in your house and garden?

The environment is also something I am passionate about and there are now regular columns on my blog this year. It is important that we are mindful of the world we live in…We all need to be aware of our homes carbon footprints…where does our food come from? How far does it travel…Simple to do but if we all did it…Not only would we support local businesses but reduce our carbon footprint…

Wednesday…

Starting with a new series of health and eating…

In this series, we look at cooking and your diet from a different perspective. Usually, we emphasize the health benefits of food and how they can be incorporated into your diet. But, what happens if you do NOT include them in your diet.

We now pick up the series after the summer with the minerals that are essential to our health.

We wanted to share with you what happens if your body is deprived of individual nutrients over an extended period of time.

Waste Not!Want Not…Week 24…Dead Gray Whales…Fat Bergs…

Week 24 …Where do the weeks go?… The research is going well but it takes me off on so many tangents and boy does it leave me with lots of questions…

I see a headline either the news or FB…Today it was this one…Not happily playing like this picture…Dead on the beach…

Grey whale blue sea

Scientist Sounds The Alarm On 9th Dead Gray Whale Off San Francisco…Whales dying of malnutrition…

Of course, it had the addition of the picture which was going to tug at your heartstrings and getting you to comment and push the share button all in the space of about 5 seconds…

blue string heart shape on wooden pallet

Wow, if you had a product to sell and made a sale someone would be rubbing their hands together…I didn’t!…

I have in the past just pressed share but so many times either through someone else’s comment or just because I wanted to know more …I discovered there is a bigger picture…

9 dead whales… 3 maybe 4 were because of a collision with a boat…That reduces the odds…

Are malnutrition and starvation the same thing?

Starvation is a severe deficiency in caloric energy intake, below the level needed to maintain an organism’s life.

Malnutrition results from a poor diet or inability to absorb nutrients.

It was said that discounting the trauma from a collision that those figures were high…maybe as a result of warming oceanic conditions, which have contributed to shifting food sources.

But the inability to absorb nutrients can be caused by illness, it could be caused by foreign bodies in the stomach or digestive system. We have seen the stories and pictures of the amount of rubbish/plastic in animals stomachs. Microplastics are a danger generally eaten by the smaller fish but who eats the smaller fish?

The story from the Blue Water Task Force states that the much-needed rainfall has brought highly polluted stormwater and debris to the beaches. Hence the surfers can’t surf and the beaches are closed …Health reasons...But what about the marine life???

My point being please don’t just take a horrified look at a picture or headline …DO your research… Please x

How low can the depths of mankind’s waste and inability to dispose of correctly reach…

Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.

W. H. Auden

I am sure many of you have thought about what flows away from your house through the water system …Where does it end up? Either in your septic tank ( If ) you have one or it goes to a sewage treatment plant through a sewage system. I have watched the videos and it is a great system so how do our waterways get polluted?

Chemical waste from factories is sometimes dumped into rivers and lakes, or directly into the ground. Pesticides (chemicals that kill insects) applied to farmland enter surface water and groundwater, often in large quantities. … I think that statement makes the situation perfectly clear …Don’t You!

I can hear you going phew! She isn’t going to blame me…We don’t get off scot-free…Sorry!

I am as guilty of this as anyone..Well, I am not now as hubby watches me like the proverbial hawk…He is just happy there is something he can blame me for…I am happy to let him have that one…haha

FAT BERGS!

The motto do not wash any fat down your sink even if accompanied by boiling water…

Thank you so much for reading this post If you have any thoughts please add a comment I always respond xxx

Waste Not! Want Not!…Week 22…Hydrating shampoo bar and pollutants…

Another week where Climate Change is high on the agenda and for the brits I suppose it makes a welcome change from Brexit…

It was also heartening to see how many people are coming out to say hey…We feel strongly about this…We want action…

green foot prints eco system

Today in my FB news feed was an article published by The Independent Newspaper  stating

MPs make history by passing Commons motion to declare ‘environment and climate change emergency’

1,457 EDMs were tabled by MPs during the 2015-16 parliamentary session. Data on EDMs is given in the House of Commons Sessional Returns under ‘notices of motions for an early day’.

My question is how many get any further than that or get passed?

It seems to be around 4% and it is worrying that the respected House of Commons library could not find any examples of a national or parliamentary declaration of a “climate emergency”

I do hope that after everyone’s hard work that the 100 MP’s signatures required to give this motion a chance happens.

I have read much before writing this post including some info I found through DuckDuckGo where searches throw up information which Google doesn’t …No surprises there…I am currently reading through a pdf on climate change and it is very interesting in that even scientists cannot agree as to the urgency or severity of the risk to life on Earth…

Many of their findings are based on info from NASA and interestingly figures on what plants need to grow and survive and what man needs to survive which are two different things…

Planet Earth

Photo on Visualhunt

Nature itself has gone through changes over many millions of years and man and nature have all adjusted and survived maybe not in exactly the same form but have evolved with the climate changes…

Most scientists agree that to some level(s) mans impact on greenhouse gases has interrupted the natural cycles of the Earth thus accelerating the natural change process.

What they don’t agree on is the impact on man and nature…

The Science says we need to be vigilant to keep our land, air and waters free of real pollution, particulates, heavy metals, pathogens, but carbon dioxide (CO2) is not one of these pollutants. Carbon is the stuff of life. Our bodies are made of carbon.
Every day a normal human exhales around 1 kg of CO2 — the simplest most chemically stable molecule of carbon in the earth’s atmosphere.

There are many critics and nasty comments about young Greta Thunberg but one of her statements when reading her speech on the haters was that she was talking to some scientists to ensure that the statements she made were true…

To me, Climate change is a science based on many factors based on research…

My question is are all these articles we see in the news, om social media is it Joe Public being fed what governments want us to know,. Is it a person or organisation who is reading and telling us what they think we want to know or telling us what their thoughts are but are those thoughts based on proven facts and science or is it just an individuals perception?

I am not a scientist or educated with lots of letters after my name unless a banking degree counts but I am also hopefully not blindly led and don’t believe everything I read…I also do check links and facts and lately by means other than Google as they, as we know, tend to show us what they think we want basing it on past searches.

I have also been wary of government officials who are given a position as head of a department when they have no expertise in that particular field…It happens…

I believe the real issues are pollution, but what constitutes pollution?

  • What are the different types of Pollution? Environmental Pollution occurs in different forms; air, water, soil, radioactive, noise, heat/ thermal and light. …
  • Air Pollution. …
  • Water Pollution. …
  • Soil pollution. …
  • Noise pollution. …
  • Radioactive pollution. …
  • Light pollution.

This is just one report on how reports can be misleading…The China Water Risk…

What are your thoughts…I would love to know do you think Climate change is a risk or just overhyped? And why?

What is not a pollutant?

Myth: CO2 is a pollutant.

Fact: Totally false. We challenge you to prove otherwise. CO2 is in our every breath, in the carbonated sodas and waters that we drink and in the dry ice that helps us keep our food cold and safe. We breathe in 400 parts per million and then exhale 40,000 parts per million with no ill effects.

To read more…

Lastly, I do believe we have a problem and we must address pollution or it will upset the natural cycle of the world but we also really need to do our own research as much of what is in the media is half-truths at best…We do need to look at the chemical pollution of our foods and health products and plastic is a huge, huge issue and these need to be addressed…

Victoria Zigler my intrepid reporter sent me these…Details of a hydrating shampoo bar something I haven’t tried yet but I will as anything which stops chemicals going in the water system is good…This shampoo bar is 100% natural and artisanal. Composed of aloe vera, natural glycerin and castor oil, it gently cleanses the hair and body, leaving the hair fibre hydrated* and full of vitality.

NO parabens, silicones and SLS. 100% vegan.

Thank you, Tori…x

The latest on Monsanto...US government declares Roundup is not dangerous to humans despite two landmark cases that found glyphosate caused cancer.

roundup weedkiller on shelves

Photo credit: JeepersMedia on Visual hunt / CC BY

It seems despite these cases, Costco removing Roundup from their shelves and many other countries, France has a total ban and many others bans with provisos…

The only course of action to me seems that the consumer needs to speak and hit where it hurts and stop buying anything which has connections to Monsanto…

What are your thoughts?

Thank you for reading and commenting on these posts …There are definitely some battles going on coupled with many untruths…xxx

My second rant for the New Year  …It didn’t take me long did it???

Sharks!

hai sharks-3347789_640

A beautiful animal and one which is very important to the well-being and the future of the oceans Ecosystem and man are doing what they do best …Overfishing, Polluting and the barbaric practise of shark finning read all about it…Here!

I haven’t finished either by a long way if you care about the beautiful world we live in then we need to take a stand…It just makes me so sad to see how things are being spoilt and polluted…I am not a banner-waving maniac I just care and try to do what I can..My way…We can make changes in our home and maybe, just maybe we can help change our little corner of the World.

Thank for reading and for all your lovely comments…You all rock! xx

About Carol Taylor:

Enjoying life in The Land Of Smiles I am having so much fun researching, finding new, authentic recipes both Thai and International to share with you.

The environment is also something I am passionate about and there will be more on this on my blog this year
